Book Synopsis Carrying on the Charism by : Renny Simno
Download or read book Carrying on the Charism written by Renny Simno and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. All are distinct, yet remain united in their efforts to graduate men and women who are "people for others." Several factors make it challenging for each to infuse Jesuit and Catholic identity on campus today. Expert research indicates that Jesuit educators are taking necessary steps to enhance Jesuit values, but offer no guarantees that the mission will survive over time. Scholarly articles written by those who have been affiliated with Jesuit institutions show that even though many people embrace and carry out the traditions of the Society of Jesus in higher education, there are many who do not, making it more difficult for administrators to achieve their goal of enhancing Jesuit mission and identity on campus. Research points out that because there are fewer Jesuits today, schools have created a multitude of programs and courses to engage faculty, staff, and students in the mission of the institution so that they feel a sense of commitment and responsibility in promoting the ideals and values of St. Ignatius Loyola. While strides have been made in recent years to achieve this goal, evidence suggests that too many students remain uninformed about the significance and meaning of a Jesuit education. Research indicates that educators should do more to encourage their students to focus not only on their careers, but to also on making a difference in the lives of others through service, which is central to the mission of a Jesuit education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Provides a comprehensive history of Jesuit higher education in the United States, weaving together the stories of the fifty-four colleges and universities that the Jesuits have operated (successfully and unsuccessfully) since 1789. It emphasizes the connections among the institutions, exploring how certain Jesuit schools like Georgetown University gave birth to others like Boston College by sharing faculty, financial resources, accreditation, and even presidents throughout their history. The book also explores how the colleges responded to common challenges-including anti-Catholic prejudice in the United States, the push from government authorities to modernize their shared curriculum, and the pull from Roman authorities to remain loyal to Catholic tradition. It covers themes like the rise of the research university in the 1880s, the administrative reforms of the 1960s, and the role of Jesuit colleges in racial justice, women's education, and other civil rights issues"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Research of Catholic Higher Education provides an important and timely overview for scholars and students interested in understanding this important sector of private higher education. More importantly, it is an important resource for those faculty, staff, and administrators interested in shaping the distinctiveness of Catholic colleges and universities. The Handbook provides chapters presenting a thematic overview of a particular element of Catholic higher education and in addition provides an extensive bibliography resource of further reading. While some of the chapters will appeal to those with specialized interests, e.g. legal affairs, finance, and community relations, the chapters on mission and religious identity, history, and the documents on Catholic higher education provide an important perspective on the challenges facing Catholic higher education and should be read by everyone involved in Catholic colleges and universities. The Handbook of Research of Catholic Higher Education is an important resource for understanding and shaping the distinctiveness of Catholic higher education.

Book Synopsis Mission Leadership in Jesuit Higher Education by : Michelle Wheatley
Download or read book Mission Leadership in Jesuit Higher Education written by Michelle Wheatley and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plenty of resources exist to illuminate the history of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit education. Yet many colleagues working in Jesuit colleges and universities feel underprepared to engage Jesuit mission and identity in their work. When dialoguing about this predicament with colleagues at my own institution (Gonzaga University), many have expressed frustration that current mission resources do not provide them with enough preparation to integrate Jesuit values is not organizational leadership. Thus, our mission identity remains too abstract, rooted in the past, or confines to personal character formation. Furthermore, colleagues remain unsure how to approach some of the tensions and complexities of university life in ways that advance our mission. Therefore, this dissertation/project seeks to build between Jesuit wisdom and concrete personal, interpersonal and systemic practices. Specifically, I investigate contemporary leadership strategies that may provide insight into operationalizing Jesuit mission in a university context. This dissertation focuses on five primary capacities: adaptive action, teaching-learning, relationship building, conflict transformation, and discernment. These five categories provide the foundation for a five-part leadership formation series and accompanying handbook. The goal of the series is to offer a community context for colleagues to make greater sense of their work experience, engage adaptive questions, and clarify opportunities for action. Ultimately, by inviting us to encounter different strategies for reflection, conversation, and praxis, my hope is to inspire our imaginations to consider new possibilities for leading mission initiatives in our communities.
