Book excerpt: The beautiful young bride of the town's wealthiest man has been missing for several months and rumors of her whereabouts are rampant. Some speak of murder at the hands of her husband. Others claim that the young beauty died at the hands of a jealous ex-boyfriend. She could have run away, but why would a woman throw away a life of luxury? Perhaps she killed her husband, took his money, and began a new life with a secret lover. When a group of friends begin to search for her, they quickly discover that their lives are in danger by those determined to keep the woman's whereabouts unknown. Excerpt: It took me a few minutes to realize that I was bound to a chair. "People know that I'm here," I yelled at him. He didn't seem to listen and gently stroked Devona's blonde hair. I looked around the attic. Jars filled with red liquid lined the wall behind Devona. I noticed my cell phone near her chair smashed into pieces. "Why?" I asked as I tried to loosen my hands. "Devona is special," he said, and I watched him pick up a syringe from a table. "My master told me that." "Who is you master?" I asked. He has gone totally crazy. "Shut up!" he yelled at me. "Do not speak of my master with your filthy mouth." I tried to move my feet, but they were bound as well. I turned my head. There wasn't anything sharp in my reach either. I needed to escape from this place. "It was my master's doing," he said, pouring the blood into a jar. I noticed that the attic door behind me was open. If only I could move the chair a little. I slowly began to push the chair toward the attic stairs. "Stop!" I was grabbed by my hair and couldn't catch my balance. "You imbecile!" he yelled. "Do you honestly think that a kid like you can fight me?" he sneered. "My master will be proud to hear that you are dead," he said, and I saw him raise the knife.

Her cousin Violet Martin (Martin Ross) had a prodigious memory, an ear for speech and dialect and profound political insight. Together, as Somerville and Ross, their literary styles seamlessly fused to create the masterpiece The Real Charlotte and the witty, comic tales of The Irish R.M. In her superbly illustrated biography Gifford Lewis examines the relationship between the cousins and expores the ways in which their Irish upbringing influenced their lives and work. -- Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Local/Global: Women Artists in the Nineteenth Century is the first book to investigate women artists working in disparate parts of the world. This major new book offers a dazzling array of compelling essays on art, architecture and design by leading writers: Joan Kerr on art in Australia by residents, migrants and visitors; Ka Bo Tsang on the imperial court in China; Gayatri Sinha on south Asian artists; Mary Roberts on harem portraiture of the Ottoman empire; Griselda Pollock on Parisian studios; Lynne Walker on women patron-builders in Britain; S?shy;ghle Bhreathnach-Lynch and Julie Anne Stevens on Irish women artists; Ruth Phillips on souvenir art by native and settler women; Janet Berlo on North American textiles; Kristina Huneault on white settler identity in Canada; Charmaine Nelson on neo-classical sculpture in North America; and Stacie Widdifield on Mexico. This pioneering collection addresses issues at the heart of feminist and post-colonial studies: the nature of difference, discrepant modernities and cross-cultural encounters. Written in a lively and accessible style, this lavishly illustrated volume offers fresh perspectives on women, art and identity. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of women artists and the art of the nineteenth century.

Fearless."It's pretty safe to say that Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s. It might have remade New York's cultural landscape; it definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully written and perfectly designed, and feared by all. There's no magazine I know of that's so continually referenced, held up as a benchmark, and whose demise is so lamented" --Dave Eggers. "It's a piece of garbage" --Donald Trump.

Book excerpt: Formed in 1839, the Anti-Corn Law League was one of the most important campaigns to introduce the ideas of economic liberalism into mainstream political discourse in Britain. Its aspiration for free trade played a crucial role in defining the agenda of nineteenth-century liberalism and shaping the modern British state. Its faith in the free market still resonates in Britain's public policy debates today. This is the first comprehensive study of the League which makes use of recent methodological developments in social history.
