Denison: 1862-1905 This small volume of the letters of Harriet, Duchess of Sermoneta, is merely the record of a lifelong friendship, the letters making no claim either to importance in their subj ect matter or to being of general interest, yet the Duchess possessed the art, in an eminent degree, of giving lifelike and vivid descriptions of the ordinary occurrences of her immediate surroundings, and her letters give a charming insight into many details of Italian life and show the impression they produced upon an English mind. It is thought, therefore, that it will give pleasure to the ever-narrowing circle of her relations and friends, that these letters should be preserved and privately printed. In these days of telephone and telegrams, few people have the time, or take the trouble, to write anything beyond the barest facts of their doings and business, and letters, therefore. He was rather older than any of his cousins, but his aunt's reason for giving him up was his pertinacity in asking questions which she was unable to answer. So he was sent just now to an old-fashioned day-school in which boys and girls were mixed, and where he had positively managed to fall in love already. There is nothing strange in that; but it so happened that Stephen's little love-fancy was destined to colour his whole life. What a lazy boy you are! Went on Aunt Harriet. Have you no lessons to learn? You learn nothing at Miss Martin's. Not very much, aunt, said Stephen. She never will answer my questions. I asked her to-day whether she didn't think Christian in the Pilgrim's Progress' a very bad man for running away from his wife, and she called me a wicked boy, and made me stand on the form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miss Harriet By Guy de Maupassant Miss Harriet appeared in Le Gaulois, July 9, 1883, under the title of Miss Hastings. The story was later revised, enlarged; and partly reconstructed. This is what De Maupassant wrote to Editor Havard March 15, 1884, in an unedited letter, in regard to the title of the story that was to give its name to the volume: "I do not believe that Hastings is a bad name, inasmuch as it is known all over the world, and recalls the greatest facts in English history. Besides, Hastings is as much a name as Duval is with us. "The name Cherbuliez selected, Miss Revel, is no more like an English name than like a Turkish name. But here is another name as English as Hastings, and more euphonious; it is Miss Harriet. I will ask you therefore to substitute Harriet for Hastings." It was in regard to this very tittle that De Maupassant had a disagreement with Audran and Boucheron director of the Bouffes Parisiens in October, 1890 They had given this title to an operetta about to be played at the Bouffes. It ended however, by their ceding to De Maupassant, and the title of the operetta was changed to Miss Helyett. But it was to his mother's newly born family pride that the idea of being the Carters Of Crownlands made its appeal. The estate, when he bought it, had belonged to a Carter, and the tradition was that two hundred years before it had been a grant of the first George to the first of the name in America. Madame Carter, as the Old lady liked to be called, immediately adopted the unknown owner into a vague cousinship, spoke Of him as a kins man Of ours, and proceeded to tell Old friends that Crownlands had always been in the family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of Mrs. Harriet Newell The death of a beloved parent and uncle, had but little effect on my hard heart. Though these afflic tions moved my passions, they did not lead me to the Fountain of consolation. But God, who is rich in mercy, did not leave me here. He had prepared my heart to receive his grace; and he glorified the riches of his mercy, by carrying on the work'. I was providentiall y invited to visit a friend in New buryport. I complied with the invitation. The evening previous to my return home, I heard the Rev. Mr. Mac F. It was the 28th of June, 1809. How did the truths, which he delivered, sink deep into my inmost soul! My past transgressions rose like great mountains before me. The most poig nant anguish seized my mind; my carnal security fled; and I felt myself a guilty transgressor, naked before a holy God. Mr. B. Returned with me the next day to Haverhill. Never, no never, .while memory retains her seat in my breast, shall I forget the affectionate manner in which he addressed me. His conversation had the desired effect. I then made the solemn resolution, as I trust, in the strength of Jesus, that I would make a sincere de dication of my all to my Creator, both for time and eternity. This resolution produced a calm serenity and composure, to which I had long been a stranger. How lovely the way of salvation then appeared Oh, how lovely was the character of the Saviour! The duty of professing publicly on which side I was, now was impressed on my mind. I came forward, and offered myself to the church, was accepted, re ceived into communion, and commemorated, for the first time, the dying love of the blessed Jesus, August 61h, 1809. This was a precious season long to be remembered! Oh, the depths of sovereign grace! Eternity will be too short to celebrate the perfections of God. Denny, of Boston For the human mind is limited. You can not exact too much from a man's attention and comprehension at a given moment. You must give him what his mind can hold and no more. One idea at a time is as much as any one can manage to express or to understand; and if you try for more you will defeat your own object. That is what we mean when we define a sentence to be the expression of one idea. A great orator once gave the following advice to a young speaker who was about to make his first appearance in the House of Commons: Say what you have to say: don't quote Latin: and sit down. It is good advice for a young writer, too Say what you have to say: don't quote Latin: and stop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But. The sun, already nearing the summit of the distant hills, held little warmth even when it managed to escape for a moment from the fly ing banks of cloud, and Dick, accustomed though he was to the intense cold of the western moun tains and prairies, was glad to escape for a while from that biting wind which apparently enter tained not the slightest respect for his clothing and which numbed him through and through. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Harriet Countess Granville, Vol. 1 Another difficulty has been the selection of the letters to be published, there being many which, for family and other reasons, are less suitable for publication. On the other hand, I have tried to carry out the views expressed by Archbishop Whately in a review he wrote of one of Miss Austen's novels, and which are equally applicable to letters. He writes: Let anyone cut out from a work everything which is devoid of importance and interest in itself, and he will find that what is left will have lost more than half its charms. We are convinced that some writers have diminished the effect of their works by being too scrupulous to admit nothing into them which had not some absolute and independent merit.' I have endeavoured to add to the interest of the letters by describing in short notes the persons referred to - either the persons who were in intimate relation with Lady Granville, or those about whom the reader might like to know something. The descriptive notes only occur the first time any one is mentioned. Lady Harriet Cavendish was the youngest daughter of the fifth Duke of Devonshire. Before she came of age she lost her mother, the beautiful Duchess. There are some letters extant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few historical figures can be more admired than Harriet Tubman. She is mythologised, idolised and made superhuman, and whilst the temptation is clear, she was really a human being, reflected in these pages. A slave, a woman, a runaway, black and poor, she fought all the odds to become a shining point in the history of emancipation. Not only was Harriet Tubman an abolitionist but she was active as an advocate for the deprived and spoke out in favour of women's suffrage. After a childhood full of violence and fear at the hands of her masters, the woman born as Araminta Ross escaped slavery. She had feared her brothers and sisters being sold away, never to be seen again, she had feared her children becoming slaves and she hoped for better. In the climate of the Southern states, decades before emancipation came for the slaves, Harriet Tubman showed unprecedented courage by not only remaining in the United States, against her best interest, but by journeying again and again into the slave states to rescue friends, family and even slaves on plantations who she had no relationship to at all. She worked as a cook, a nurse, a scout and a spy. She was even described as a general by her contemporaries in the Union army. Tubman was the very first woman to lead an armed military expedition but astounding as that is, her fight was always bigger than the war. She fought to make lives better for the downtrodden. Sarah Bradford, our author, hoped by the publication of Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman to give Harriet Tubman a modicum of comfort in her old age. Whilst Harriet is long gone, her memory is palpable in Bradford's account and is only made more so when turning the pages.
