The story was later revised, enlarged; and partly reconstructed. This is what De Maupassant wrote to Editor Havard March 15, 1884, in an unedited letter, in regard to the title of the story that was to give its name to the volume: "I do not believe that Hastings is a bad name, inasmuch as it is known all over the world, and recalls the greatest facts in English history. Besides, Hastings is as much a name as Duval is with us. "The name Cherbuliez selected, Miss Revel, is no more like an English name than like a Turkish name. But here is another name as English as Hastings, and more euphonious; it is Miss Harriet. I will ask you therefore to substitute Harriet for Hastings." It was in regard to this very tittle that De Maupassant had a disagreement with Audran and Boucheron director of the Bouffes Parisiens in October, 1890 They had given this title to an operetta about to be played at the Bouffes. It ended however, by their ceding to De Maupassant, and the title of the operetta was changed to Miss Helyett. We are convinced that some writers have diminished the effect of their works by being too scrupulous to admit nothing into them which had not some absolute and independent merit.' I have endeavoured to add to the interest of the letters by describing in short notes the persons referred to - either the persons who were in intimate relation with Lady Granville, or those about whom the reader might like to know something. After a childhood full of violence and fear at the hands of her masters, the woman born as Araminta Ross escaped slavery. She had feared her brothers and sisters being sold away, never to be seen again, she had feared her children becoming slaves and she hoped for better. In the climate of the Southern states, decades before emancipation came for the slaves, Harriet Tubman showed unprecedented courage by not only remaining in the United States, against her best interest, but by journeying again and again into the slave states to rescue friends, family and even slaves on plantations who she had no relationship to at all. She worked as a cook, a nurse, a scout and a spy. She was even described as a general by her contemporaries in the Union army. Tubman was the very first woman to lead an armed military expedition but astounding as that is, her fight was always bigger than the war. She fought to make lives better for the downtrodden. Sarah Bradford, our author, hoped by the publication of Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman to give Harriet Tubman a modicum of comfort in her old age. Whilst Harriet is long gone, her memory is palpable in Bradford's account and is only made more so when turning the pages.
