Book Synopsis Misha and His Leningrad Diary by : Evelina De Gelmont
Download or read book Misha and His Leningrad Diary written by Evelina De Gelmont and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Misha, a young Russian boy who survived the siege of Leningrad by Nazi Germany during World War II. For 900 days (1941-1944) three million Leningraders endured starvation, lack of water, electricity, and fuel, living on one small piece of bread per day and subjected to endless air raids and bombardments. Cold and starvation destroyed over one million lives. The focal point of the book is based on the events detailed in Misha's diary. The remainder describes the historical context and impact of the blockade, and the survivor's life story. The book is intended as a tribute to the human spirit. Evelina was born in Russia in 1934. She worked as an engineer in Lvov, Ukraine for many years. It was there that she married Misha. After her husband died prematurely, Evelina decided to emigrate to America. She settled in Minnesota and found a job as an engineer. It was in America that Evelina became a Christian and married a minister. For many years she had an unshakeable determination to write this book, a biography of her beloved husband. Even as she struggled with cancer, which eventually took her life, finishing the book remained one of her top concerns. Although she never saw it published, her hope was that one day many people would be inspired by her husband's great zeal for life. In Misha's own words, "I have just now realized what life means to me. Life is a great gift given to us; it is not always lived properly."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daisy Ellery’s pies have a secret ingredient: The magical ability to avenge women done wrong by men. But Daisy finds herself on the receiving end in Misha Popp’s cozy series debut, a sweet-as-buttercream treat for fans of Ellery Adams and Mary Maxwell. The first time Daisy Ellery killed a man with a pie, it was an accident. Now, it’s her calling. Daisy bakes sweet vengeance into her pastries, which she and her dog Zoe deliver to the men who’ve done dirty deeds to the town’s women. But if she can’t solve the one crime that’s not of her own baking, she’ll be out of the pie pan and into the oven. Parking her Pies Before Guys mobile bakery van outside the local diner, Daisy is informed by Frank, the crusty diner owner, that someone’s been prowling around the van—and not just to inhale the delectable aroma. Already on thin icing with Frank, she finds a letter on her door, threatening to reveal her unsavory secret sideline of pie a la murder. Blackmail? But who whipped up this half-baked plot to cut a slice out of Daisy’s business? Purple-haired campus do-gooder Melly? Noel, the tender—if flaky—farm boy? Or one of the abusive men who prefer their pie without a deadly scoop of payback? The upcoming statewide pie contest could be Daisy’s big chance to help wronged women everywhere…if she doesn’t meet a sticky end first. Because Daisy knows the blackmailer won’t stop until her business is in crumbles.
Book Synopsis The Talnikov Family by : Avdotya Panaeva
Download or read book The Talnikov Family written by Avdotya Panaeva and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Talnikov household, violence is in the air. Natasha grows up in a chaotic and abusive family, surrounded by screaming relatives and scurrying cockroaches. Her father whips his children but dotes on his pets. Her aunts and governess take a grim satisfaction in doling out discipline—in between primping and preening for suitors. Amid this bleakness, Natasha and her siblings conspire to steal stray moments of childhood joy. Avdotya Panaeva’s The Talnikov Family portrays a tumultuous upbringing in 1820s St. Petersburg with equal parts wit and rage. Modeled on the author’s own life before her marriage to a nobleman writer, this sensational novel joined nineteenth-century Russia’s intense debates about gender, sexuality, and revolution. It was swiftly suppressed after its original appearance in 1848, the censor calling it “cynical” and “undermining of parental power.” Panaeva published a number of iconic Russian writers; her own novel anticipates Dostoevsky’s frenetic quarrels and heightened tone as well as Chernyshevsky’s sweeping radicalism. Unlike many of her contemporaries, however, Panaeva considers the experiences of servants and workers, and she offers a critique of the family as ruthless as any other in literature. In Fiona Bell’s vivid translation, The Talnikov Family offers readers a new perspective on nineteenth-century Russian literature and the society that shaped it.

Book excerpt: Sometimes, if you want to have it all, you have to let it all go. Orville and Wilbur Wright came to the North Carolina coast for the strong, steady winds. Daniel Cross has come for something almost as intangible. He comes seeking a new place that he and Noah can call home. Someplace with a future and not a past. Uprooting the two of them from Boston had been a sudden decision—based on nothing more than Daniel's perception that Noah was growing more withdrawn and he blamed that on Boston. Perhaps that decision had been a rash one. Now, he is determined to make the best of it. Samantha Rivers works with her father at Rivers Motorcycle Sales & Service. Is she happy? Maybe not, but she is satisfied and wants only for things to stay the same. When Daniel Cross shows up and buys a junk motorcycle, she thinks he's crazy. And annoying. The feeling is mutual. But then something changes and the small act of buying and rebuilding a motorcycle becomes the catalyst that draws them closer while tearing them apart and putting them back together again too. A reflection on love and life for fans of Nicholas Sparks and Jojo Moyes. 236 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No summary can do justice to the strange appeal of this unusual, short book, which is at once a crime novel, a comic novel and a serious political satire on contemporary Ukraine." —Anne Applebaum, The Wall Street Journal With the collapse of the Soviet Union, newly-free Ukraine is a shell-shocked land . . . In poverty-and-violence-wracked Kyiv, unemployed writer Viktor Zolotaryov leads a down-and-out life with his only friend, Misha, a penguin that he rescued when the local zoo started getting rid of animals it couldn't feed. Even more nerve-wracking for Victor: a local mobster has taken a shine to Misha and wants to borrow him for events. But Viktor thinks he’s finally caught a break when he lands a well-paying job at the Kyiv newspaper writing “living obituaries” of local dignitaries—articles to be filed for use when the time comes. The only thing is, the time always seems to come as soon as Viktor finishes writing the article. Slowly understanding that his own life may be in jeopardy, Viktor also realizes that the only thing that might be keeping him alive is his penguin.
Book Synopsis The Ninefold Path by : Anthony Alioto
Download or read book The Ninefold Path written by Anthony Alioto and published by Turning Stone Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Alioto was diagnosed with end stage renal disease in 1993 and was forced to go on dialysis for several years before receiving a successful kidney transplant in 2000. In The Ninefold Path, he invites readers to join him on a harrowing personal journey through a labyrinth of tests, “what can I expect” meetings with medical staff, surgeries, and near-death experiences. He spares no detail in his desire to provide a guide for others living with a chronic disease – and their families and friends – on how to navigate the oftentimes rough waters of modern medicine. The Ninefold Path is for all of those wearily traveling through chronic illnesses and for those by their sides wondering what to do, it is a celebration of the extraordinary individuals in medicine who relieve the suffering of strangers each and every day. In cataloging detail, there is inspiration, plus a call to compassion and serenity. A Note to the Reader from The Ninefold Path: “The reader can expect to encounter a very personal and human account of chronic illness, sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious, and then at times simply absurd – but, hopefully, also moving. One need not search for profound insights, recipes, therapy, or sage advice. It is my hope that you will come away with a feeling, a sense of being there, maybe a kind of liberation from the ‘merely personal’ as Einstein phrased it, and a new appreciation for what others endure daily. Even in the midst of suffering physical pain and mental anguish, a person may yet gain the freedom to live a life of celebration, joy, compassion, and serenity. Zen Master Kyong Ho once said, ‘Don’t hope for life without problems. An easy life results in a judgmental and lazy mind.’”
