Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirror of Intemperance, and the History of Temperance Reform: To Which Is Added the Life and Death of King Alcohol, and Original and Selected Anecdotes The author of this work has observed with deep regret an apparent decline of interest in the temperance enterprise for some time past. As there is a close connection between enlightened zeal in moral and religious causes, and the diffusion of principles, information, and facts, in connection with such causes, he was induced to undertake the preparation of this volume, with a view of awakening greater interest in this movement. No one can doubt the utility of diffusing correct intelligence in reference to the temperance question. All who have had experience in pro moting this cause, will admit the force of the following testimony of that indefatigable and philanthropic laborer in the temperance enterprise, E. C. Delavan, Esq in relation to the matter of circu lating temperance reading. He says - I have always considered that a dollar judiciously expended, in circulating good temperance documents among the people, produced one hundredfold the cost, in direct or indirect pecuniary advantage to the public. A tem perance document, for a series of years, was placed in each family of a town; and I was assured it occasioned the saving of ten thousand dollars a year, in the cost of ardent spirits alone, not to mention the many and great incidental advantages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy is a volume of original articles on all aspects of ancient philosophy. The articles may be of substantial length, and include critical notices of major books. OSAP is now published twice yearly, in both hardback and paperback. 'The serial Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy (OSAP) is fairly regarded as the leading venue for publication in ancient philosophy. It is where one looks to find the state-of-the-art. That the serial, which presents itself more as an anthology than as a journal, has traditionally allowed space for lengthier studies, has tended only to add to its prestige; it is as if OSAP thus declares that, since it allows as much space as the merits of the subject require, it can be more entirely devoted to the best and most serious scholarship.' Book excerpt: Shakespeare has never been more ubiquitous, not only on the stage and in academic writing, but in film, video and the popular press. On television, he advertises everything from cars to fast food. His birthplace, the tiny Warwickshire village of Stratford-Upon-Avon, has been transformed into a theme park of staggering commercialism, and the New Globe, in its second season, is already a far bigger business than the old Globe could ever have hoped to be. If popular culture cannot do without Shakespeare, continually reinventing him and reimagining his drama and his life, neither can the critical and scholarly world, for which Shakespeare has, for more than two centuries, served as the central text for analysis and explication, the foundation of the western literary canon and the measure of literary excellence. The Shakespeare the essays collected in these volumes reveal is fully as multifarious as the Shakespeare of theme parks, movies and television. Indeed, it is part of the continuing reinvention of Shakespeare. The essays are drawn for the most part from work done in the past three decades, though a few essential, enabling essays from an earlier period have been included. They not only chart the directions taken by Shakespeare studies in the recent past, but they serve to indicate the enormous and continuing vitality of the enterprise, and the extent to which Shakespeare has become a metonym for literary and artistic endeavor generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout human history illness has been socially interpreted before its range of meanings could be understood and disseminated. Writers of diverse types have been as active in constructing these meanings as doctors, yet it is only recently that literary traditions have been recognized as a rich archive for these interpretations. These essays focus on the methodological hurdles encountered in retrieving these interpretations, called 'framing' by the authors. Framing and Imagining Disease in Cultural History aims to explain what has been said about these interpretations and to compare their value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a gold mine of primary documents--including letters, diary entries, personal narratives, political speeches, broadsides, trial transcripts, and contemporary newspaper articles--The Boisterous Sea of Liberty brings the past to life in a way few histories ever do. Here is a panoramic look at early American history as captured in the words of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe and many other historical figures, both famous and obscure. In these pieces, the living voices of the past speak to us from opposing viewpoints--from the vantage point of loyalists as well as patriots, slaves as well as masters. The documents collected here provide a fuller understanding of such historical issues as Columbus's dealings with Native Americans, the Stamp Act Crisis, the Declaration of Independence, the Whiskey Rebellion, the Missouri Crisis, the Mexican War, and Harpers Ferry, to name but a few. Compiled by Pulitzer Prize winning historian David Brion Davis and Steven Mintz, and accompanied by extensive illustrations of original documents, The Boisterous Sea of Liberty brings the reader back in time, to meet the men and women who lived through the momentous events that shaped our nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the few theological formulas of medieval times to survive the scrutiny of the Reformation was that of the infernal triad of the sins of the Flesh, the World, and the Devil. Through a close analysis of the structural and thematic role that this triad plays in Books I and II of the Faerie Queene and in Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes, Patrick Cullen explores the imaginative continuity between two of the greatest poets of the English Renaissance, Edmund Spenser and John Milton. By presenting the two poets in a single focus. Professor Cullen demonstrates the profound indebtedness of Milton to Spenser, a relationship which has not received due scholarly attention, despite Milton's praise of Spenser as "a better teacher than Aquinas" and his admission according to Dryden, that Spenser was his "original." Professor Cullen's new approach allows him to define a clear allegorical lineage between some of the major poems of the period, demonstrating the imaginative affinity of Spenser and Milton with great concreteness and specificity.
