Book excerpt: Although attention to the Book of Judith and its heroine has grown in recent years, this is the first full-length study to focus on adaptations of the Bible’s Old Testament Book of Judith across a range of literary genres written in French during the early modern era. Author Kathleen Llewellyn bases her analysis on references to Judith in a number of early modern sermons as well as the ’Judith’ texts of four early modern writers. The texts include two theatrical dramas, Le Mystère de Judith et Holofernés (c. 1500), believed to have been written by Jean Molinet, and Le Miroir des vefves: Tragédie sacrée d'Holoferne & Judith by Pierre Heyns (1596), as well as two epic poems, La Judit (1574) by Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas, and Gabrielle de Coignard’s Imitation de la victoire de Judich (1594). Llewellyn’s goal is to see Judith as she was envisioned by early modern French writers and their readers, and to understand how the sixteenth century shaped their view of the heroine. Noting aspects of that story that were emphasized by sixteenth-century authors, as well as elements that those writers altered to suit their purposes, she also examines the ways in which writers of this era made use of Judith’s story as a means to explore interests and concerns of early modern writers, readers, and spectators. Representing Judith in Early Modern French Literature provides a deeper understanding of early modern ideas regarding the role of women, the use of exemplary stories in preaching and teaching, theories of vision, and the importance of community in Renaissance France.

Book excerpt: In 1978, the European Mechanics Committee and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique agreed to the organization of an Interna tional Colloquium on the "Mechanical Behavior of Anisotropic Solids". The meeting was held at Villard-de-Lans (near Grenoble, France) from 19th to 22 nd June 1979. The Colloquium considered mechanical aspects of the anisotropy of solids, both initial and induced by permanent deformation, anisotropic hardening and damage, oriented fissuration, etc. Topics concerned mathematical, experimental and engineering aspects of the anisotropy of metals, composites, soils and rocks. The aim of the Colloquium was to bring together experimentalists, theoretecians and engineers interested in various features of mechanical anisotropy, in order to permit an interdisciplinary exchange of understanding, experience and methods. A detailed description of the scope, aim and proposed topics is contained in the Preface. The announcement of the Colloquium attracted a large number of sub mitted contributions. Conforming with the principles of Euromech Colloquia and of the Colloques Internationaux du CNRS, the accepted contributions were limited to 50 communications. A general description of the scientific program is to be found in the Preface. Five general lectures gave state-of-the-art reports concerning some areas of the behavior of anisotropic solids; the 50 communications were divided into 12 sessions dealing with specific topics (see "Contents"). In order to facilitate subsequent contact between the reader and the contributors, full addresses are given in the "List of Authors."

This book was released on 2013 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyotard met Jacques Monory in 1972, and the text on him published at that time was the first that Lyotard dedicated to contemporary art since Discourse, Figure. Lyotard's interest in the plastic arts thus fits fully within the setting of his political preoccupations. The artist-protagonist stages the recurring motifs that fascinate Lyotard: the scene of the crime, the revolver, the woman, the victim, glaciers, deserts, stars. The atmosphere of the essays on Monory is "Californian." Monory's imaginary repertoire goes well beyond the masters of modernity and is in line rather with a "modern contemporary surrealism." Both Lyotard and Monory live the "dilemma of Americanization," the America represented by cinema, fashion, novels, music. It is in this atmosphere that Lyotard and Monory will finally evoke their supreme experience of difference: desire and fear, exultation and a profound malaise. The plastic universe of Monory and the aesthetic meditations of Lyotard are in perfect symbiosis. Sarah Wilson's epilogue thoroughly outlines both the history of a friendship and, at the same time, the intellectual and artistic climate of the 1970s.
