As it pertains to the genre, dehumanization stands for the loss of one's basic humanity - individuality, emotion, and free will - as a result of harsh social control and/or overindulgence in high technology. One novel that offers a compelling depiction of this theme is Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The novel depicts a world that has been united under a single government known as the World State. This regime has taken extensive measures to suppress the human element. Citizens are bred artificially, conditioned from birth to conform to the norms of society, and are kept docile through extensive leisure and frivolous entertainment. For those in power, the ultimate purpose of dehumanization is to maintain an unshakable control over the populace. The purpose of this thesis is to present four arguments regarding dehumanization in Brave New World: 1.) how the novel is meant to be a warning regarding mankind's technological/scientific prowess, 2.) how the main characters represent humanity, 3.) how the theme may have been influenced by contemporary norms, and 4.) how the theme of dehumanization, as presented in the novel, influenced the same theme in future science fiction literature.

In the neoliberal economy of the United States, the discourse of white nationalism compels upwardly mobile immigrants to trade in their ties to ethnic and linguistic communities to assimilate to the dominant culture. For Latinx Caribbean immigrants, exiles, and refugees this means abandoning Spanish, rejecting forms of communal inter-dependence, and adopting white, middle-class forms of embodiment to mitigate any ethnic and racial identity markers that might hinder their upwardly mobile trajectories. This transactional process of acquiring and trading in various kinds of material and embodied practices across traditions is a phenomenon author Israel Reyes terms “transcultural capital,” and it is this process he explores in the contemporary fiction and theater of the Latinx Caribbean diaspora. In chapters that compare works by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Nilo Cruz, Edwin Sánchez, Ángel Lozada, Rita Indiana Hernández, Dolores Prida, and Mayra Santos Febres, Reyes examines the contradictions of transcultural capital, its potential to establish networks of support in Latinx enclaves, and the risks it poses for reproducing the inequities of power and privilege that have always been at the heart of the American Dream. It focuses on how contemporary women's organizations have represented and refashioned the Filipina in their campaigns to improve women's status by locating her in history, society and politics; imagining her past, present and future; representing her in advocacy; and identifying strategies to transform her. The drive to alter the situation of women included a political aspect (lobbying and changing legislation) and a cultural one (modifying social attitudes and women’s own assessments of themselves). In this work Mina Roces examines the cultural side of the feminist agenda: how activists have critiqued Filipino womanhood and engaged in fashioning an alternative woman. How did activists theorize the Filipina and how did they use this analysis to lobby for pro-women’s legislation or alter social attitudes? What sort of Filipina role models did women’s organizations propose, and how were these new ideas disseminated to the general public? What cultural strategies did activists deploy in order to gain a mass following?
