Book excerpt: Miracle Loops is a heart wrenching yet uplifting biography of Fanaye Dirasse, a steadfast and resilient woman who endured many life challenges and traumatic experiences while devoting her life to help others. Born in Ethiopia, she came to the United States for her education with hopes of returning home to teach. Her dreams were shattered by the 1974 Marxist revolution. The military junta executed her father and imprisoned her mother. Fanaye became an American citizen, and pursued a successful teaching career in Iowa. Years later, she opened an Education Center in Maryland and finally in Virginia. A dedicated and award winning teacher, she helped and inspired many students to succeed in their studies and chosen careers. Fanaye lived with the results of many tragic events that included: suffering third degree burns thirty three years apart, suffering a stroke six months after donating a kidney to a stranger, and undergoing three brain surgeries over the next decade. Despite her pain and suffering, her faith carried her forward intensifying her understanding of what really matters in life. She loved God and loved life, living it to the fullest, caring for, loving, and inspiring all she came across.

Book excerpt: Loop Group is Larry McMurtry at his contemporary best, a novel that can best be described as Thelma and Louise meets Terms of Endearment, in which two aging ladies set out on a road trip that will take them from Hollywood to Texas, with many adventures on the way. In perhaps his finest contemporary novel since Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry, with his miraculously sure touch at creating instantly recognizable women characters and his equally miraculous sharp eye for the absurdities of everyday life in the modern West, writes about two women, old friends, who set off on an adventure—with unpredictable and sometimes hilarious results. As Loop Group opens, we meet Maggie, whose three grown-up daughters have arrived at her Hollywood home to try and make her see sense about her busy life, a life that intersects with lots of interesting—all right, bizarre—people. Her daughters push her into having a few second thoughts about it, and these are reinforced when her best friend, Connie, seeks an escape from her own world of complex and difficult relationships with men. Maggie conceives the idea of driving to visit her Aunt Cooney’s ranch near Electric City, Texas, and the two women prepare for the trip by buying a .38 Special revolver (which leads to unexpected trouble along the way). This road trip will end by changing their lives. Alternately hilariously funny and profoundly sad—even tragic—Loop Group is a major Larry McMurtry novel and a joy to read.

Book excerpt: Danila attends the funeral of Channel One journalist Nadezhda Avdeeva. He means that the serial killer is not decapitated. The people he exposed are only tentacles of the hydra. Nimak continues to investigate, but is hindered in every way possible by prosecutors: Timia Lendel and Alexander Krymchak. In the Carpathian Mountains, it is common to see single cases with a disease outcome. Danila clearly understands that the Beast from Belokorovichi, or rather the puppeteer, has taken over the case. In pursuit of the killer in the Carpathian mountains, Danila himself spotted under an avalanche, but his training and experience survived. The murders in the mountains continue, the whole country frozen in anticipation of another tragedy. Nimac gets on the trail of the killer and begins his pursuit. The investigator already has the breath of the beast, but the latter, a subtle psychologist, circles Nimak and sets him up on another troupe in the mountains. All the accidents are well known in the version that it is Danila Nimak who is the killer. Even Michael Lemka gives cases of occurrence that it was Nimak who was their source. The prosecutor's office declares Nimak wanted. He is hidden at his dacha by Yuri Popovich, whom Danila warns of a possible attack by the beast on his daughter. Popovich calls his daughter, at which time she is always at home. But daughter Anna doesn't answer. The two rush the car to the daughter's house. Nimak flies into the apartment, sees blood and the absence of his commander's daughter. Here, too, he finds a clue as to where the next one will be stashed, to be solved. Police officers rush into the apartment to capture Danila. He gets away from the chase and hides in an abandoned mine. Popovich helps him, and meanwhile Nimak finds the answer to the question of where Anna is now. The chief and his subordinate rush to the alleged poisoning in Mezhigorie, to the spiral staircase sanatorium being reconstructed. That is where the commander's daughter is supposed to be. Unfortunately, they are too late - Anna is brutally murdered. This is seen by Danila and keeps his father out of the tragedy, blocking this passage. At one point, Yuri shoots Nimak and wounds him in the leg. The men are slowed by emotion. Nimak rushes on after the beast; he knows where it will be in a minute. The bandage falls off his leg and Danila gathers a lot of blood. When he gets out on the beast, he is forcibly released. The operatives state that Nimac is lying at the feet of the forcibly hanged man. Everything is against Nimac. He is placed in the detention center. Everybody knows how convicts treat police officers in their midst for a long time. Nimak gets into conflicts now and then. At one point he is beaten half to death and remains in intensive care for several weeks. In the meantime, Krymchak does everything in his power to get Danila a life sentence. The beast from Belokorovich is laying low at this time. And it is nice to find time with his hostage, she turns out to be Nadezhda Avdeeva, a journalist for Channel One...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded cinema: avant-garde moving image works that claim new territory for the cinematic, beyond the bounds of familiar filmmaking practices and the traditional theatrical exhibition space. First emerging in the 1960s amidst seismic shifts in the arts, multi-screen films, live cinematic performance, light art, kinetic art, video, and computer-generated imagery - all placed under expanded cinema's umbrella - re-emerged at the dawn of the 2000s, opening a vast new horizon of possibility for the moving image, and perhaps even heralding the end of cinema as we know it. Cinema Expanded: Avant-Garde Film in the Age of Intermedia offers a bold new account of its subject, breaking from previous studies and from larger trends in film and art scholarship. Author Jonathan Walley argues that expanded cinema's apparent departure from the traditions and forms of cinema as we know it actually radically asserts cinema's nature and artistic autonomy. Walley also resituates expanded cinema within the context of avant-garde film history, linking it to a mode of filmmaking that has historically investigated and challenged the nature and limits of cinematic form. As an outgrowth of this tradition, expanded cinema offered a means for filmmakers within the avant-garde, regardless of their differing styles, formal concerns, and politics, to stake out cinema's unique aesthetic terrain - its ontology, its independence, its identity. In addition to reconsidering the better-known expanded cinema works of the 1960s and 70s by artists like Andy Warhol, Robert Whitman, and Nam June Paik, Cinema Expanded also provides the first scholarly accounts of scores of lesser-known works across more than 50 years. Making new arguments about avant-garde cinema in general and its complex meditations on the nature of cinema, it urgently addresses current and crucial debates about the fate of the moving image amidst a digital age of near-constant technological change.

Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the Proceedings of a Europhysics Study Conference held in Erice, Sicily from March 17 to 24, 1980. The objective of the meeting was to bring together practitioners of two different approaches to the unification of the fundamental par ticle interactions: supersymmetry and supergravity on the one hand, and grand unified gauge theories on the other hand. The hope was that exposure to each others' ideas and problems would at least aid mutual comprehension, and might start people thinking how to develop a synthesis of the two approaches which could avoid their individual shortcomings. It is not clear to us how successful the conference was in achieving these objectives. On the one hand many important ad vances in supersymmetric theories were reported which were primarily of a technical nature, while some interesting attempts to probe the phenomenological consequences of supersymmetry and supergravity were also presented. On the other hand there was considerable in terest in phenomenological aspects of grand unified theories such as proton decay, neutrino masses and oscillations, and links with cosmology. There was also some work on model-building but rela tively few purely technical advances. A few speakers tried to build bridges between the formalism of supersymmetry or supergravity and the phenomenologically successful gauge theories of elementary par ticle interactions.

Part three is titled Mediations The Experience of Miracles. This part contains four mediations. Book excerpt: A Theory and Practice of Program Development provides a comprehensive introduction to a software development method based on VDM-SL. Each development step is rigorously justified, and the strategies and transformations used are justified and explained ma thematically. The approach provides the formal semantics of a simple, but powerful, wide-spectrum programming language and gives a formal definition of both algorithmic and data refinement. Unlike other texts, it covers both the theory and practice of program development. Although based on VDM-SL, no knowledge of this language is assumed, thus making it widely accessible. A Theory and Practice of Program Development is intended for 3rd/4th year undergraduate and postgraduate students taking formal methods and software engineering; software developers involved in the production of provably correct computer systems and reusa ble design and the problems of reusable code.

Book excerpt: The first accessible reader on magic’s generative relationship with contemporary art practice. From the hexing of presidents to a renewed interest in herbalism and atavistic forms of self-care, magic has furnished the contemporary imagination with mysterious and often disorienting bodies of arcane thought and practice. This volume brings together writings by artists, magicians, historians, and theorists that illuminate the vibrant correspondences animating contemporary art’s varied encounters with magical culture, inspiring a reconsideration of the relationship between the symbolic and the pragmatic. Dispensing with simple narratives of reenchantment, Magic illustrates the intricate ways in which we have to some extent always been captivated by the allure of the numinous. It demonstrates how magical culture’s tendencies toward secrecy, occlusion, and encryption might provide contemporary artists with strategies of remedial communality, a renewed faith in the invocational power of personal testimony, and a poetics of practice that could boldly question our political circumstances, from the crisis of climate collapse to the strictures of socially sanctioned techniques of medical and psychiatric care. Tracing its various emergences through the shadows of modernity, the circuitries of ritual media, and declarations of psychic self-defence, Magic deciphers the evolution of a “magical-critical” thinking that productively complicates, contradicts and expands the boundaries of our increasingly weird present.
