Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Fiftieth General Assembly: Of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the United States, 1880 The General Assembly then proceeded to the election of Moderator, which resulted in the choice of Rev. A. Templeton, a commissioner from the Presbytery of Kirkpatrick, of the Synod of Brazos. On motion, it was determined that the daily sessions of this General Assembly, until further ordered, shall begin at 9 o'clock, A. M., and 3 o'clock, P. M. The General Assembly then adjourned until to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock. Prayer by the Moderator. The General Assembly met, and was opened with prayer by Rev. W. G. L. Quaite. On calling the roll, the following members were absent: Ministers A. J. Baird, D. D., B. F. Patton, J. W. Poindexter, D. D.; Ruling Elders: T. T. Cobb, J. P. Hutton (sick), J. R. McKee, J. B. Phillips, A. Stewart (sick), A. Voorhees. The Stated Clerk announced that he had enrolled the names of the following additional commissioners: Rev. H. A. Jones, from the Presbytery of Memphis; Rev. J. J. Meek, and Ruling Elder Thomas Bryan, from the Presbytery of Oxford; Rev. John Hudson, from the Presbytery of Little River; Ruling Elder D. H. Miller, from the Presbytery of West Prairie; Rev. M. B. Feemster, from the Presbytery of Bell; Ruling Elder J. F. Williams, from the Presbytery of Mississippi; Rev. M. Dent, and Ruling Elder Reuben Dresback, from the Presbytery of Athens; Ruling Elder G. C. Saunders, from the Presbytery of Tennessee. The Stated Clerk also announced that Ruling Elder R. L. Caruthers, principal commissioner from the Presbytery of Lebanon, had made his appearance, and that his name had been enrolled instead of that of Ruling Elder P. K. Williamson, Alternate. One half hour was spent in devotional exercises, conducted by Rev. R. H. Caldwell. Minutes of yesterday were read and approved.
