Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Committee of Council on Education, 1845, Vol. 2: With Appendices During the second week of my examination, an opportunity was afforded me of listening to a lesson delivered by each of the students in attendance at the Model School. These students are 26 in number. In the general table of the results of my examination appended to this Report (see Appendix I have recorded the estimate which I have been induced to form of their acquired skill as teachers, so far as that may be judged of, from an opportunity so limited, and an effort made under circumstances so discouraging. Book Synopsis Good Schools, Effective Schools by : Harold Silver
Download or read book Good Schools, Effective Schools written by Harold Silver and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1994 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the changes, and reasons for the changes, in ways in which schools have been judged to be 'good' or 'effective'. A major focus is the development from the 1970s of a research-based movement in Britain, the United States and elsewhere that has explored school effectiveness and improvement. The author traces the development of the American and British research, and the ways in which it affected American school policy and practice - and failed to do so in competition with national policies that aimed at a national curriculum, assessment and related changes." "In order to consider the nature of this effective schools research and movement, the book sets them against a background of nineteenth- and twentieth-century judgements of what, in Britain, has constituted a good school. It traces the power of inspectors, examinations, governments, managers and others to make judgements and to define the criteria for making judgements, and ways in which research also became influential. This book is therefore an important piece of recent history, using mainly Britain and the United States to explain and illustrate the changes, and focusing on concepts of central importance in current schools policy and practice internationally."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Evangelicals and Education by : Khim Harris
Download or read book Evangelicals and Education written by Khim Harris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first history of English public schools founded by Evangelicals in the nineteenth century. Five existing public schools can be traced back to this period: Cheltenham College, Dean Close School, Monkton Combe School, Trent College, and St LawrenceÕs College. Some of these schools were set up in direct competition with new Anglo-Catholic schools, while others drew their inspiration from and, to a greater or lesser extent, were modelled on their rivals. Harris documents, for the first time, the rise of Evangelical societies such as the influential Church Association and the little-known Clerical and Lay Associations. An extensive bibliography and useful biographical survey of influential Evangelicals of the period completes this groundbreaking study.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the educational experience of the 1960s and 1970s and to suggest ways of approaching major contemporary themes such as equality, accountability and standards. The author underlines a nineteenth and twentieth-century sociological tradition in analysing education and covers a range of educational themes including aspects of schooling and higher education, education as social policy, knowledge as power, and teaching and adolescence. The volume therefore illuminates important contemporary issues in education and society by using historical, sociological and comparative insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, The Second Coming is an experiment in the writing of popular history – a contribution to the history of the people who have no history and an exploration of some of the ideas, beliefs and ways of thinking of ordinary men and women in the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries. Millenarianism is a conceptual tool with which to explore some aspects of popular thought and culture. It is also seen as an ideology of social change and as a continuing tradition, traced from the end of the seventeenth century to the 1790s, and is shown to be embedded in folk culture. Abundant in rich and lively descriptions of such colourful characters as Richard Brothers, Joanna Southcott, John Wroe, Zion Ward and Sir William Courtenay, as well as studies of the Shakers, early Mormons and Millerites, the result is a window into the world of ordinary people in the Age of Romanticism.

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Committee of Council on Education, Vol. 2: With Appendices; 1846 Often ampler means are not provi ed, through a dread of running into the expensive experiments which have been tried with various efi'ectin a number of schools under my inspection. But I am convinced that much of the excess of such expense, and its experimental character, equally arise from a confusion of the ele ments upon which self-acting ventilation and warming depend the former upon the unequal wei ht of two different columns of air, acting as through an inverted syphon, and the latter upon simple radiation -for the more distinct they are kept, the more economically may they be applied. A want of ventilation will not be felt where there are, besides windows turning on swivel hinges, at least two ample openings to the external air close to the Upper most part of the ceiling, at opposite ends of the room; openings which, when all the others are closed in winter, will alternately serve the purposes of a downcast and an upcast shaft, as the miners would say, according to the direction of the wind. The mere respiration of the children will constantly send a portion of warm air to be emitted upward, and a stream of carbonic acid gas to be swept up mechanically by the fire, so as to compel the en trance oi fresh supplies from the downcast opening, or any other which may exist. Such is very commonly the successful ventilation of the existing school-rooms; but while the one small open fire sufiices to perform its part of the ventilation, it is quite insufficient to furnish an ample supply of artificial heat during the winter. To obtain this, I would recommend warm-water pipes round every school-room as the most economical means of getting a moderate radiation equally distributed throughout the whole space. This is a means which occasions the least possible consumption of fuel; and, if sufficiently powerful in the first instance, may be regulated without either danger, doubt, difiiculty, or chance of disorder, by the mere drawing of a damper. With the addition of such warm water apparatus and the provision of two proper upward openings, there are few of the existing school-rooms, which would not be perfect in regard to health and comfort, except those which have no ceiling, under bare slates, and are therefore, if low, both hot in summer and cold in winter beyond power of remedy, without the interposition of some kind of ceiling, which had better follow the form of the roof, to avoid reverberation; a very annoying accom paniment of most of the flat ceilings. A want not so readily sup plied is that of more space for the exercise of the children, and apparatus to help them to every variety of muscular exertion. Book Synopsis Samuel Wilderspin and the Infant School Movement by : Phillip McCann
Download or read book Samuel Wilderspin and the Infant School Movement written by Phillip McCann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Wilderspin became a household name in his own lifetime. Befriended by Dickens, lampooned by Cruikshank, his achievements discussed in Parliament, he was one of the best known educators of the 1830s and 1840s. However, Wilderspin’s consistent opposition to denominational education combined with his liberal and advanced views made him unpopular with the Establishment. Samuel Wilderspin’s fame declined after his retirement in 1847 but his reputation as an infant school educator has survived. Many of his ideas and practices have had a great influence on infant education. In this book, first published in 1982, Wilderspin’s own story is placed in the context of this growing movement led by Owen, Buchanan and Oberlin, and it goes a long way towards reinstating him as one of the prominent figures in the early education movement. This title will be of interest to students of history and education.
