Book Synopsis Alcohol in the Age of Industry, Empire, and War by : Deborah Toner
Download or read book Alcohol in the Age of Industry, Empire, and War written by Deborah Toner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines alcohol production, consumption, regulation, and commerce, alongside the gendered, medical, religious, ideological, and cultural practices that surrounded alcohol from 1850 to 1950. Through analyzing major changes in alcohol's place in society, contributors demonstrate the important connections between industrialization, empire-building, and the growth of the nation-state. They also identify the diverse actors and communities that built, contested, and resisted those processes around the world. Overall, this book proposes a new global framework that is vital to understanding how deeply alcohol was involved in central processes shaping the modern world. It shows how empires were partly built through alcohol, in both economic and ideological terms, yet alcohol production, trade, and consumption were also sites for anti-colonial resistance. Contributors also discuss how alcohol regulations and public health discourses increasingly revealed the intent and reach of state power to monitor and police citizens, as well as the legitimization of that power through nationalism. Illustrated with over 50 images, the book will be a valuable resource for students and researchers studying the history of alcohol, as well as the cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries more broadly.

Book Synopsis Women in International and Universal Exhibitions, 1876–1937 by : Rebecca Rogers
Download or read book Women in International and Universal Exhibitions, 1876–1937 written by Rebecca Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for the importance of bringing women and gender more directly into the dynamic field of exposition studies. Reclaiming women for the history of world fairs (1876-1937), it also seeks to introduce new voices into these studies, dialoguing across disciplinary and national historiographies. From the outset, women participated not only as spectators, but also as artists, writers, educators, artisans and workers, without figuring among the organizers of international exhibitions until the 20th century. Their presence became more pointedly acknowledged as feminist movements developed within the Western World and specific spaces dedicated to women’s achievements emerged. International exhibitions emerged as showcases of "modernity" and "progress," but also as windows onto the foreign, the different, the unexpected and the spectacular. As public rituals of celebration, they transposed national ceremonies and protests onto an international stage. For spectators, exhibitions brought the world home; for organizers, the entire world was a fair. Women were actors and writers of the fair narrative, although acknowledgment of their contribution was uneven and often ephemeral. Uncovering such silence highlights how gendered the triumphant history of modernity was, and reveals the ways women as a category engaged with modern life within that quintessential modern space—the world fair.
Book Synopsis Do Everything by : CHRISTOPHER H. EVANS
Download or read book Do Everything written by CHRISTOPHER H. EVANS and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Frances Willard (1839-1898) was one of the most prominent American social reformers of the late nineteenth century. This biography explores Willard's life, her contributions as a reformer, and her broader legacy as a women's rights activist in the United States. As the long-time president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), Willard built a national and international movement of women that campaigned for prohibition. Emphasizing what she called "Do Everything" reform, Willard became a central figure in campaigns supporting woman suffrage, economic justice, Christian socialism, and numerous other reforms during the Gilded Age. A devout Methodist, Willard helped shape predominant religious currents of the late nineteenth century, including being an important figure in the rise of the social gospel movement in American Protestantism. In addition to chronicling Willard's life, the biography examines ways that Willard crafted a distinctive culture of women's leadership not fully explored by other scholars. Despite her enormous fame during her lifetime, the book examines reasons why Willard's legacy has been eclipsed by subsequent twentieth-century women reformers"--
