Book excerpt: The latest edition of Minor Surgery carries on the highly respected tradition of the well known earlier editions in providing a superbly illustrated step-by-step guide to minor surgery. As previously, the book begins by placing minor surgery into context with a description of the setting up, equipping and running of a minor operations facility in a primary health care setting. Methods of anaesthesia follow. The text then goes on to describe over 40 surgical procedures in step-by-step detail, accompanied by colour photographs and line drawings. The authority and clarity of the text owe much to the author's own experience of over 20,000 minor operations. All sections have been revised, some reflect improved techniques and others take into account the wishes of those doctors who undertake more complex minor surgical procedures. The latter are incorporated into the Advanced Minor Surgery section, which includes the technique of radio-surgery. A new chapter on the role of the Practice Nurse/Operating Theatre Assistant is included, acknowledging the vital role they play. Another important new chapter features biopsy techniques, allowing for prompt diagnosis of skin cancer. As a new addition, specialists in their field have been invited to write a chapter giving information on how to improve the results of minor surgery. This Specialist Minor Surgery Section contains contributions from a consultant plastic surgeon, consultant ophthalmologist and dental surgeon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book on Minor Surgery During the last decade while surgery has shared in the great advance made by all the sciences, one of its branches, minor surgery, has far outstripped the others. This has been caused by a great number of factors. The industrial clinic, the workers compensation insurance, the use of local anesthesia, and the realization of the far-reaching results and complications of poorly and improperly treated minor injuries have been responsible for the prodigious strides of this branch. The disfiguring scars of burns, the stiff fingers, due to neglected tendon sheath infections, and other such conditions so important to the indi vidual both socially and economically have left their indelible imprint upon all surgeons, stimulating them to a keener interest in this formerly unimportant division of surgery. To give detailed description of the widely different methods of treating the same surgical condition would fill many volumes, and would fall far beyond the scope of this book. In the chapters which follow an attempt has been made to give those surgical procedures which are simple and efficient. In their selection it has always been borne in mind that while complicated treatments may yield better results in the hands of their originators, complete failure has often met the, attempts of those not skilled in the involved technic. A work on Surgery has long since ceased to be the product of an indi vidual. We, therefore, extend our heartiest thanks to other authors, our predecessors and teachers; and for much help to Doctors G. M. Phelps and Ralph Colp, and also to Grace Adams and Emma Renick. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minor Surgery: Or Hints on the Every-Day Duties of the Surgeon In the former editions of this volume, some of the points referred to seemed of such simplicity, that considerable doubt existed in my mind as to the propriety of their consideration, presuming that every student would be familiar with their details. Experience, however, has demonstrated that it is in the very simplest matters that the young practitioner soonest hesitates, his collegiate studies instructing him rather in the weightier matters of the law than in those of less importance.
