Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minor Attic Orators, Vol. 1 of 2: Antiphon, Andocides; With an English Translation The text upon which the present translation is based is that of I. Bekker (1822) but I have not hesitated to introduce such alterations and corrections as the fresh manuscript evidence and detailed linguistic study of the last hundred years have made necessary or probable. The critical apparatus, while by no means exhaustive, will, i hope, prove full enough to enable the reader to appreciate for himself the rela tive value of the principal sources from which the text of Antiphon and Andocides derives. Of the surviving fragments all those are printed which possess any historical or literary importance. It appeared beyond the scope of the present volume to include isolated words quoted by the ancient lexico graphers as grammatical rarities. These are readily accessible in existing editions of the two authors and are of no interest to the general reader. In regard to the translation itself I need say only that I have aimed at being both accurate and readable, but am fully conscious that I have too often failed to be either. I should, however, like to take this oppor tunity of thanking many friends for their sugges tions and advice, particularly the present Warden of Merton, Sir John Miles, whose critical acumen and long experience of comparative law have re. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Attic Orators: Antiphon, Andocides, Lysias, Isocrates, Isaeus; Being a Companion Volume to the Attic Orators From Antiphon to Isaeus The principles which have guided the selection have been chiefly two - 1. To choose passages from each author which, taken together, should interpret as completely as possible his part in the general evolution of Attic prose style: 2. To take care that these passages should also possess intrinsic interest as illustrations of Greek thought, politics, or manners. Book excerpt: Antiphon of Athens, born c. 480 BCE, disliked democracy and was an ardent oligarch. Of his fifteen extant works three concern real murder cases. The others are academic exercises. Andocides of Athens, born c. 440 BCE, disliked the extremes of democracy and oligarchy. Of his four extant speeches, Against Alcibiades is doubtful. Fourth century BCE orators were involved in Athenian resistance to Philip of Macedon. Lycurgus was with Demosthenes in the anti-Macedonian faction. Hyperides> was also hostile to Philip and led Athenian patriots after 325 BCE. But Dinarchus favored an oligarchy under Macedonian control and Demades supported the Macedonian cause too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V.I. ANTIPHON of Athens, born in 480 B.C., spent his prime in the great period of Athens but, disliking democracy was himself an ardent oligarch who with others set up a violent short-lived oligarchy in 411. The restored democracy executed him for treason. He had been a writer of speeches for other people involved in litigation. Of the fifteen surviving works three concern real murder-cases, the others being exercises in speech-craft consisting of three 'tetralogies' whereof each tetralogy comprises four skeleton speeches: accuser's; defendant's; accuser's reply; defendant's counter-reply. ANDOCIDES of Athens, born c440 B.C., disliked the extremes of both democracy and oligarchy. Involved in religious scandal in 415 B.C., he went into a money-making exile. After at least two efforts to return, he did so under the amnesty of 403. In 399 he was acquitted on a charge of profaning the 'Mysteries' and in 391-390 took part in an abortive peace embassy to Sparta. Extand speeches are: 'On his Return' (a plea on his second attempt); "On the Mysteries' (a self-defence); 'On the Peace with Sparta'. The speech 'Against Alcibiades' (the notorious politician) is suspect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a critical investigation of a wide range of features of religious discourse in the transmitted forensic, symbouleutic and epideictic orations of the Ten Attic Orators, a body of 151 speeches which represents the mature flourishing of the ancient art of public speaking and persuasion. Serafim focuses on how the intersections between such religious discourse and the political, legal and civic institutions of classical Athens help to shed new light on polis identity-building and the construction of an imagined community in three institutional contexts – the law court, the Assembly and the Boulē: a community that unites its members and defines the ways in which they make decisions. After a full-scale survey of the persistently and recurrently used features of religious discourse in Attic oratory, he contextualizes and explains the use of specific patterns of religious discourse in specific oratorical contexts, examining the means or restrictions that these contexts generate for the speaker. In doing so, he explores the cognitive/emotional and physical/sensory reactions of the speaker and the audience when religious stimuli are provided in orations, and how this contributes to the construction of civic and political identity in classical Athens. Religious Discourse in Attic Oratory and Politics will be of interest to anyone working on classical Athens, particularly its legal institutions, on ancient rhetoric, and ancient Greek religion and politics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Attic Orators From Antiphon to Isaeos For the analyses of the orations it seemed best to adopt no uniform scale, but to make them more or less full according to the interest of the subject matter or the nature of its difficulties. In analysing the works of Isocrates, which abound in matter of literary or historical value, I have endeavoured to give the whole of the contents in a form easy of access, and, at the same time, to preserve the most characteristic features of expression. A careful analysis, whether copious or not, is necessarily to some extent a commentary, since the analyst must exhibit his view of the relation in which each part of the writer's meaning stands to the rest.
