Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SSBCI provides funding to states, territories, and eligible municipalities to expand existing or to create new state small business investment programs, including state capital access programs, collateral support programs, loan participation programs, loan guarantee programs, and venture capital programs. This book examines the SSBCI and its implementation, including Treasury's response to initial program audits conducted by the U.S. Government Accountability Office and Treasury's Office of Inspector General. These audits suggested that SSBCI participants were generally complying with the statute's requirements, but that some compliance problems existed, in that, the Treasury's oversight of the program could be improved; and performance measures were needed to assess the program's efficacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine stories in Mike Alberti’s debut collection shine a sharp light on small-town American life —not the Arcadian small towns of yesteryear, but the old mill towns hanging on after the mill has stopped running, the deserted agricultural communities in the middle of vast industrial farms, places where bad luck has become part of the weather. But even in these blighted, neglected landscapes, the possibility of renewal always presents itself: there is hope for these places and the characters who inhabit them. In these fresh, innovative stories, some people let you down, but some people don’t.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education in Minnesota was first published in 1950.As a guidepost of comprehensive information on the status of post high-school education in Minnesota and its likely role in the future, this report provides a basis for constructive thinking by administrators, teachers, legislators, and others concerned with higher education, not only in Minnesota but in other sections of the country.Presented here is a summary of the findings and recommendations of the Minnesota Commission on Higher Education, created by action of the Minnesota State Legislature in 1947 to survey and report on the state's resources in this area of education. The Minnesota Commission has probed and evaluated all of higher education, synthesizing its own and other research into a detailed yet comprehensive picture that suggests necessary next steps.A practical, down-to-earth viewpoint is held throughout, and the recommendations are based on factual research. The colleges are studied in relation to the kinds of work Minnesota people do, their cultural backgrounds, the amount of money they have to spend, their social activities, their grade and high school educations, their responsibilities as citizens. In this way, higher education is considered, not as an abstraction, but as a social force affecting the kinds of people who live in Minnesota. The major divisions of the volume indicate its scope and realistic viewpoint: The Setting of Higher Education in Minnesota, The Student Potential for Higher Education, Junior College Education, Liberal Arts Education, Teacher Education, Education at the University of Minnesota, The Future of Higher Education in Minnesota.Chapters are by 23 different authors representing various types of colleges and agencies involved in the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s public schools are brimming with students who are not only new to English but who also have no schooling or a large break in their schooling. These students create unique challenges for teachers and administrators. This handbook is a welcome new resource for secondary teachers and administrators working in areas with burgeoning immigrant populations, as well as ESL instructors and researchers. The book addresses some of the many issues facing the subpopulation of English language learners who have limited or interrupted formal schooling, helping dedicated teachers and administrators to meet this subpopulation’s highly specific literacy development and content-area knowledge needs. Meeting the Needs of Students with Limited or Interrupted Schooling is grounded in research but goes beyond it to offer practical guidance on fostering the success of students from limited or interrupted schooling backgrounds by providing student case studies, model programs and classes, and helpful teaching techniques and tips.
