Book Synopsis The Ukraine war and its food security implications for India by : SJ, Balaji
Download or read book The Ukraine war and its food security implications for India written by SJ, Balaji and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia’s war on Ukraine shows no signs of subsidence. Its economic and societal adversities have already been felt worldwide but keep evolving, with food and energy being the most affected. Low-income, food-deficit nations importing from these two countries – many of which are in Northern Africa and Western and Central Asia – face critical challenges. The South Asian region, which has grappled with surging commodity prices and supply constraints even before the war, is likely to witness further inflation with rising food and oil prices. India is home to around 18% of the world’s population and accounts for 74% of the South Asian population. It is predicted to be the fastest-growing big economy this year. The country’s central bank (RBI) predicts that GDP will grow by 7.5% in FY 2022-23 (RBI, 2022), while many international organizations forecast growth between 6.4% and 8.2% (ADB, 2022; IMF, 2022; United Nations, 2022; World Bank, 2022). Still, in the wake of the ill effects of COVID-19, the country’s dependence on imports such as oil, fertilizers, and edible oils, and given surging domestic food and nonfood inflation in recent months, raises concerns about economic stability and possible interventions that might curtail fragility. The country consumes around 5 million barrels of crude oil daily but imports over 89% of its requirement from overseas. Crude oil prices have increased by 27% in just four months since the start of the war (February- June 2022). Edible oils have similarly increased, with palm and soybean oil prices rising by around 14% and 18%, respectively. The price of sunflower seed oil has increased by 42%, of which 86% originates from Ukraine and Russia. Fertilizer import dependency from the conflict regions is also sizeable. Russia was the 5th largest supplier of fertilizers to India in 2021-22, and Ukraine and Belarus were the 9th and 10th largest suppliers. The rise in prices of both finished fertilizers and fertilizer inputs has prompted the Government to double the fertilizer subsidy budgeted earlier this year. This policy brief investigates India's susceptibility to the war's disruptions and higher prices for commodities where import dependence is high. It then discusses potential income, food, and nutritional impacts on farmers, the poor, and the vulnerable. It also evaluates the Government’s policy measures such as subsidization, social safety nets, and trade diversification to reduce the impact of the war. Finally, it explores the market opportunities the conflict has created and the required structural reforms that would equip the country to handle such shocks in the future.

Book Synopsis Resilience pathways: Understanding remittance trends in post-coup Myanmar by : Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity
Download or read book Resilience pathways: Understanding remittance trends in post-coup Myanmar written by Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remittances have emerged as an important source of income for households in post-coup Myanmar. This paper utilizes data from the second and fifth rounds of the Myanmar Household Welfare Survey (MHWS) to analyze remittance trends between January and June 2022 and the same period in 2023. This is supplemented with data from the Myanmar Migration Assessment (MMA) which was conducted with a sub-sample of MHWS households in June and July 2023. According to MHWS, between January and June 2023, 16 percent of households received remittances from at least one member who was residing overseas or in a different state or region. This comprises eight percent of households receiving remittances from migrants outside of Myanmar and ten percent of households receiving remittances from migrants within Myanmar. Around 12 percent of households received remittances from a single migrant and four percent of households received remittances from two or more members. Among households that received remittances from within Myanmar, they received on average 127,559 per month (about 61 USD). Households that received remittances from outside of Myanmar received around 395,835 per month (about 188 USD), significantly higher than the amount from migrants within Myanmar. Among remittance receiving households, remittances made up 39 percent of household income. Based on MMA data, most foreign migrants reside in Thailand and Malaysia while most domestic migrants reside in Yangon, Mandalay, or Shan. During the twelve-month period between June 2022 and July 2023, over 57 percent of migrants in the MMA sent money back to their households in Myanmar. A greater percentage of overseas migrants sent remittances, compared to migrants within Myanmar. Mobile money was the most common method for migrants within Myanmar to send money, with 70 percent sending money in this way. Instead, most migrants abroad relied on Myanmar banks, 47 percent of migrants. More than half of the households surveyed received the same level of remittances in 2022/2023 as in the previous year. Households received more remittances when migrants earned higher salaries and obtained new jobs, or when the household witnessed shifts in exchange rates or faced an increased need for remittances. Conversely, households received fewer remittances when migrants grappled with elevated living expenses, received lower salaries, or remained unemployed. The MMA data also highlights the remittance spending patterns of households over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023. About 75 percent of households allocated remittances to everyday food expenses. Remittances were also heavily used to cover non-food and health expenses, 41 and 36 percent, respectively. Asset-poor households, income poor households, and hungry households were more likely to spend remittances on everyday food and non-food expenses, education, and loan repayment. Compared to 2020, in 2023 households increased their remittance spending on home improvement, construction of new residences, and debt repayment. Combining MMA and MHWS data we investigate the characteristics associated with receiving remittances. Daughters of household heads are more likely to send remittances. Migrants with children are less likely to send remittances. Migrants aged younger than 18 are less likely to send remittances while migrants older than 40 are more likely to send remittances. Migrants with lower education are less likely to send remittances. Those migrating for employment and with work agreements are more likely to send remittances. Finally, remittances play a crucial role in improving household welfare. A final set of regressions reveal that receiving remittances is positively associated with key welfare indicators, including food security, dietary diversity, and poverty reduction.

Download or read book The Business Year: Mexico 2024 written by and published by The Business Year. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand how the investment environment has evolved over recent months in Mexico, our team conducted a year-long, on-the-ground research operation that included interviews with over 150 business leaders and officials defining trends across every major sector of the economy. It is an election year in Mexico, meaning the often turbulent Obrador administration is drawing to a close. In contrast with the nervousness and uncertainty we witnessed ahead of his inauguration, our team notes a particular sense of ease around the upcoming elections as CEOs and investors are more familiarized with Morena, the party founded by the incumbent president. Overall, 2024 is expected to see an unusual general continuity of business during an election year thanks to the fact that both of the main presidential candidates are not expected to announce disruptive macroeconomic policies. Through this 220-page publication, featuring interviews with top business leaders from every major sector of the economy, as well as a range of articles and analysis, we present a comprehensive snapshot of the Mexican economy and the investment environment at this crucial period.

Book Synopsis Planning Democracy by : Nikhil Menon
Download or read book Planning Democracy written by Nikhil Menon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian planning project was one of the postcolonial world's most ambitious experiments. Planning Democracy explores how India fused Soviet-inspired economic management and Western-style liberal democracy at a time when they were widely considered fundamentally contradictory. After nearly two centuries of colonial rule, planning was meant to be independent India's route to prosperity. In this engaging and innovative account, Nikhil Menon traces how planning built India's knowledge infrastructure and data capacities, while also shaping the nature of its democracy. He analyses the challenges inherent in harmonizing technocratic methods with democratic mandates and shows how planning was the language through which the government's aspirations for democratic state-building were expressed. Situating India within international debates about economic policy and Cold War ideology, Menon reveals how India walked a tightrope between capitalism and communism which heightened the drama of its development on the global stage.

Book Synopsis A Sultanate that Endures by : Joseph A. Kéchichian
Download or read book A Sultanate that Endures written by Joseph A. Kéchichian and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-08 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qaboos bin Sa'id, Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020, marked Omani history. He belonged to that very small circle of leaders who solemnized their time in power, transforming the Sultanate by empowering generations of citizens to lead constructive and fulfilling lives. Joseph Kéchichian provides a full assessment of the fourteenth Al Sa'id dynasty sovereign, setting out his vision for what was then a relatively isolated nation, championing the necessity for alliances, investing in people as well as the land, and founding key institutions that evolved over five decades. These achievements took time to materialize as Qaboos preserved Al Sa'id rule, governed wisely, avoided internal and external political entanglements, and passed the torch to his successor Haitham bin Tariq, who validated Al Sa'id authority upon becoming Sultan. A Sultanate that Endures is a companion volume to Oman and the World: The Emergence of an Independent Foreign Policy (RAND, 1995). It highlights Omani history, with a particular focus on the religious creed Ibadhiyyah that embraces tolerance and prevents injustice. The transition from a theocracy to a monarchy that established dynastic rule is discussed in the context of the Sultanate's millennial history, affirming its rulers' legitimacy and citizen acceptance. The author evaluates how Ibadhiyyah and its traditions formed the gist of the Sultanate's foreign policies, concentrating on ties with predominantly Muslim-inhabited countries, engagement with the African Continent, its links with the Arab Gulf region, and appraising Omani diplomacy with key Asian and Western countries. The study closes with a preliminary analysis of the transition to Sultan Haitham, evaluates his primary appointments, and reviews his declared priorities for the nation. Future domestic and foreign policy challenges that may confront Omanis concludes the volume.

Book Synopsis Bivocational Ministry by : Kristen Plinke Bentley
Download or read book Bivocational Ministry written by Kristen Plinke Bentley and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As churches face shrinking resources, the model of ministers working at multiple jobs is re-emerging as relevant to the 21st century. Bivocational Ministry provides insights for congregations and pastors, women and men alike, about how to understand, adapt, and succeed in this model. One of the toughest places congregations can find themselves is where they cannot afford, or do not need, a pastor working exclusively for the church--it's a foundation-changing realization for congregations and pastors alike. Bivocational Ministry provides practical and theological wisdom for congregational leaders engaging in bivocational ministry more fully and intentionally. Bentley's research at Lexington Theological Seminary provides stories, examples, and insights gleaned from interviews and surveys, representing the diverse contexts of congregations and ministers from the research project. The book includes female pastors and lay leaders as exemplars, providing a more complete understanding of the blessings and challenges emerging in this model of ministry. It includes study questions and honest stories about benefits and drawback, successes and lessons learned. Bivocational Ministry is ideal for small-group discussions and individual reflection, especially for congregations needing to transform successfully to a new model of leadership.
