Lee Ramsey Jr.mines the riches of southern fiction and discovers a colorful assortment of ministers who arise out of the religious South. At once mystical and mischievous, these ministers haunt the margins of southern life while preaching a gospel that startles and compels. But their oddness is also their appeal--and part of their gift. For through these colorful portraits of Christian ministry, today's readers are challenged to think about what matters in ministry and to re-imagine ministry in ways that bring new life to the church and community. Throughout, Ramsey shows how ministers such as Roger Hagan in Will Campbell's The Conventionand Hazel Motes in Flannery O'Connor's Wise Bloodcan help show us the stumbling blocks to faithful ministry and steer clergy and congregations forward in today's world.

This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ephesians 4:11, the apostle Paul tells us that Jesus gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to the church. He did this in the days of the New Testament; the question is, does Jesus still give all of them to the church today? This book seeks to address this question. In this book you will find: . The ministries of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers defined. . Names of people in the Bible who held these ministries. . Descriptions of each ministry from a biblical-historical perspective. . An examination of the contemporary expressions of the ministries of evangelists, pastors, and teachers. . Answers to objections about the presence of apostles and prophets in the church today. . A case for the continuance of the ministries of apostles and prophets in the modern church. . A description of the ministries of apostles and prophets in the contemporary church. John P. Lathrop is a graduate of Zion Bible College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is an Ordained Minister with the International Fellowship of Christian Assemblies and is currently active in pastoral ministry at the Christian Pentecostal Church in Newton, MA. In addition to pastoring, he regularly writes for Vista magazine, the official publication of the International Fellowship of Christian Assemblies, and for the Pneuma Review, a publication of the Pneuma Foundation. He has ministered overseas in the countries of Indonesia and Zimbabwe. He and his wife, Cynthia, are the parents of five adult children: Carrie, Joshua, Deborah, Stephen, and Daniel. The Lathrops also have two grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The church today is in great need of the prophet's ministry. And yet, there exist much ignorance and misunderstanding of this important and vital ministry. This is partly due to the lack of teaching on the subject of the prophetic ministry, the lack of depth in the understanding of spiritual matters concerning the church, fear, distrust between leaders, pride, jealousy and disobedience to the Spirit of God and the will and plan of God for end-time-ministry. All of these things and such like are to be blamed for the ignorance and misunderstanding that currently exist concerning the prophet's ministry. As the church draws nearer to the end of the church-age prophets, prophetess and prophetic ministries will become more necessary and in increasing demand. The purpose of this book is to show biblical evidence for the ministry of the modern-day prophet/prophetess and to show they still exist within the New Testament Church. The purpose is also to establish knowledge of the workings of, the need of and the importance of the modern-day prophetic ministry. Without the ministry of the prophet/prophetess the body of Christ would indeed be incomplete. " Why The Church Needs The Prophet's Ministry" is an excellent guide for opening the doors of awareness to the prophet's ministry and for the bringing about of understanding that can lead to cooperation between the five-fold-ministry, as well as the entire body of Christian workers, adding to the completion of the end-time work of the ministry."

His words speak to you, too. These devotions based on Jeremiah's words and experiences are meant to help encourage you as a pastor, a teacher, a church leader, and a parishioner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of social media and its inherent ability to make people's words "go viral," abundant opportunities exist for false prophecies to flourish in the church. People are drawn to these "prophets" to ease anxiety, fulfill wants, or know the future. But when these men and women aren't speaking God's words, they can lead people astray and turn their eyes from our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. In Understanding Prophetic Ministry, author Tewodros Assefa Damtew addresses this danger by highlighting the benchmarks and characteristics of the true prophets of God and providing practical instructions on how to deal, in love, with the false prophets that will arise these days. Pastor Damtew bases his words on biblical truth and rigorous theological study, and his teaching provides transformative insights and guidance to all those interested in learning more about prophecy and other ministerial gifts in the church. With topics ranging from the restoration of the prophetic ministry to the infiltration of false prophets, this is a must-read for Bible students, visionaries, church leaders, and the laity. Relevant, timely, and straightforward, Understanding Prophetic Ministry will be a valuable resource in Bible colleges and seminaries, church and personal libraries, and small group studies.

Book excerpt: A Prophet's Ministry is based on personal life experiences. I give testimony as well as explanation on several reasons why the Holy Spirit wants to speak to us today. I, by precept and example, demonstrate why we have need of the Holy Spirit in our everyday life. You will find encouragement through my testimony on how God worked on my behalf through the leading of His Spirit. How He led me from failures to great successes. I demonstrate systematic growth as I show how Jesus led me from a being a layman to a minister of the gospel, how He encouraged me by working his miracles, signs and wonders. Then He performed those same miracles, signs, and wonders through me for the benefit of others as Jesus walked me through the ministry. I reveal shocking testimony as examples of how the prophet's ministry functions. Bill was born in Detroit and raised in the Great Lake area of Michigan. He was baptized Catholic and became born again in a Catholic charismatic prayer meeting in 1975. He converted to the Christian faith. In 1986, he was ordained as an evangelist in a Pentecostal Prophet Church. Through God's interventions, he moved to California with his wife and twin boys in 1979. Over the years, he ministered in many churches through out the U.S.A., teaching many pastors and teachers who still function to this day. Today Bill resides in Yucaipa, CA with his wife, Connie, and currently volunteers as a part time Hospice Chaplain. He also ministers prophecy wherever the Spirit wills.

Who validates authentic prophetic ministry? How does a pastor rightly relate to a prophet? This rich resource seeks deeper understanding and wisdom on issues of foundational importance for prophetic people and everyone who loves God's gifts.
