Book Synopsis The Sociology of Rural Communities by : Graham Crow
Download or read book The Sociology of Rural Communities written by Graham Crow and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 54 articles and excerpts--published between 1962 and 1994--which reflect the diversity of approaches adopted in the study of rural communities. Volume one addresses theories of rural society and historical communities. Volume two covers economic and social change, the social impact of geographical mobility, and social divisions and conflicts and community development. The theories are explored through analyses drawn primarily from North America, Australasia, the UK and Continental Europe, including analyses of the impact of the development of modern capitalism on rural Germany; women's lives in Newfoundland; and the adaptability of the individual producer in Vietnamese peasant communities. The discussions highlight the importance of such analyses for broader theories of social development. No index. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis The New Corporate Philanthropy by : Frank Koch
Download or read book The New Corporate Philanthropy written by Frank Koch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somehow it surprises me that this book wasn't written earlier, but I'm glad it wasn't. If it had been, Frank Koch probably wouldn't have sensed the vacuum that has existed, and this practical book wouldn't have come to be. I'd like to stress practical. The book describes in a comprehensive and-more importantly-practical way how every corporation can mar shal its financial support, employee talents, and other resources to make a meaningful impact on society. I happen to be one of those corporate executives who believes that a business has a responsibility to make such an impact. My brother Peter agrees. Our father and uncle set an example for us, and the tradition goes back to our great uncles and their uncle, Levi Strauss himself. For more than 125 years Levi Strauss & Co. has shown that social responsibil ity is good business and, in recent years, that it is also compatible with dynamic growth. We are proud of that tradition and what it produced, but 1 think the modern era of social responsibility or corporate citizenship at Levi's got its impetus in 1968 with my association with the National Alliance of Businessmen. It was there that I saw what other companies were doing: innovative ways to train, to transport, to provide jobs. It opened my eyes to areas in which business could become involved, areas I never before thought of as business responsibilities-even areas where it could have an impact.

Book Synopsis Privatizing the Land by : Ivan Szelenyi
Download or read book Privatizing the Land written by Ivan Szelenyi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privatizing the Land provides an overview of reforms in the state socialist agrarian systems, especially during the 1970s and 1980s in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Using empirical evidence, the contributors provide a balanced assessment of how agrarian economies performed in different communist countries. The Soviet and Eastern European experience is contrasted with reforms in China, Vietnam and Cuba to provide the first comprehensive account of agricultural restructuring after the collapse of communism in Europe and Asia.
Download or read book Good Faith written by Jane Smiley and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2003-04-22 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres comes a “smashing...fascinating” novel (The New York Times Book Review) that conjures all the American obsessions of the 1980s: sex, greed, envy, real estate, and the American dream. In her subversively funny and genuinely moving new novel, Jane Smiley nails down several American preoccupations with the expertise of a master carpenter. Forthright, likable Joe Stratford is the kind of local businessman everybody trusts, for good reason. But it’s 1982, and even in Joe’s small town, values are in upheaval: not just property values, either. Enter Marcus Burns, a would-be master of the universe whose years with the IRS have taught him which rules are meant to be broken. Before long he and Joe are new best friends—and partners in an investment venture so complex that no one may ever understand it. Add to this Joe’s roller coaster affair with his mentor’s married daughter. The result is as suspenseful and entertaining as any of Jane Smiley’s fiction.
