Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-Hydro Design Manual has grown from Intermediate Technology's field experiences with micro-hydro installations and covers operation and maintenance, commissioning, electrical power, induction generators, electronic controllers, management, and energy surveys. There is an increasing need in many countries for power supplies to rural areas, partly to support industries, and partly to provide illumination at night. Government authorities are faced with the very high costs of extending electricity grids. Often micro-hydro provides an economic alternative to the grid. This is because independentmicro-hydro schemes save on the cost of grid transmission lines, and because grid extension schemes often have very expensive equipment and staff costs. In contrast, micro-hydro schemes can be designed and built by local staff andsmaller organizations following less strict regulations and using 'off-the-shelf' components or locally made machinery.

During transmission materials ageing and performance issues can lead to losses amounting to about 10% of the total generated electricity. Advanced grid technologies are therefore in development to sustain higher network efficiency, while also maintaining power quality and security. Electricity transmission, distribution and storage systems presents a comprehensive review of the materials, architecture and performance of electricity transmission and distribution networks, and the application and integration of electricity storage systems. The first part of the book reviews the fundamental issues facing electricity networks, with chapters discussing Transmission and Distribution (T&D) infrastructure, reliability and engineering, regulation and planning, the protection of T&D networks and the integration of distributed energy resources to the grid. Chapters in part two review the development of transmission and distribution system, with advanced concepts such as FACTS and HVDC, as well as advanced materials such as superconducting material and network components. This coverage is extended in the final section with chapters reviewing materials and applications of electricity storage systems for use in networks, for renewable and distributed generation plant, and in buildings and vehicles, such as batteries and other advanced electricity storage devices. With its distinguished editor, Electricity transmission, distribution and storage systems is an essential reference for materials and electrical engineers, energy consultants, T&D systems designers and technology manufacturers involved in advanced transmission and distribution. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.7, Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus, course: Electric Power Engineering - Micro Hydro-power and its grid connection, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction Gotikhel Hydropower Plant (GHP) is one of the nearest Isolated Micro Hydropower Plant (MHP) from the main city out of 650 isolated MHPs available in Nepal which still supplies electrical power to 173 Households, one hull machine and one school. The extension of national grid has made life of MHPs insecure as consumers want the energy from more reliable source i.e. from national grid. In the context of Nepal, especially in rural areas, construction of MHPs are very costly and because of unplanned extension of national grid, some of MHPs are in closing conditions and same cases will continue more in future. So, there is a huge risk in big investments and valuable efforts of villagers. Synchronization of MHPs to the national grid will be the ultimate solution for the existence of MHPs in Nepal. So, this Master Thesis will also focus on grid connection of GHP and consequent impacts on technical as well as financial sectors before and after the grid connection of GHP. 2. Objectives Taking GHP as a private/ community pilot project for grid connection in Nepal, the following objectives of grid-connected MHPs has been generalized: - To ensure optimum use of national resource and fulfill the possible new demand of energy in rural areas since grid connection and Power Exchange Agreement (PEA) allow the Rural Electrification Entity (REE) to sell their excess energy to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) grid and the REE can purchase the required energy from the grid when the demand of its members surpass the generation by MHP(s) under it. - To facilitate development of new MHPs by local communities, Individual Power Producers as they can profiteer by selling the excess energy to the grid. - To ensure market for spill energy of MHPs

Book excerpt: This book explores many recent techniques including ANN, fuzzy logic, hydraulic models and IWRM utilized for integrated water resources management, a real challenge in India for obtaining high irrigation efficiency. The book deals with topics of current interest, such as climate change, floods, drought, and hydrological extremes. The impact of climate change on water resources is drawing worldwide attention these days; for water resources, many countries are already stressed and climate change along with burgeoning population, rising standard of living, and increasing demand are adding to the stress. Further, river basins are becoming less resilient to climatic vagaries. Fundamental to addressing these issues is hydrological modelling which is covered in this book Further, integrated water resources management is vital to ensure water and food security. Integral to the management is groundwater and solute transport. The book encompasses tools that will be useful to mitigate the adverse consequences of natural disasters.

Book excerpt: Applied Urban Ecology: A Global Framework explores ways in which the environmental quality of urban areas can be improved starting with existing environmental conditions and their dynamics. Written by an internationally renowned selection of scientists and practitioners, the book covers a broad range of established and novel approaches to applied urban ecology. Approaches chosen for the book are placed in the context of issues such as climate change, green- and open-space development, flood-risk assessment, threats to urban biodiversity, and increasing environmental pollution (especially in the “megacities” of newly industrialized countries). All topics covered were chosen because they are socially and socio-politically relevant today. Further topics covered include sustainable energy and budget management, urban water resource management, urban land management, and urban landscape planning and design. Throughout the book, concepts and methods are illustrated using case studies from around the world. A closing synopsis draws conclusions on how the findings of urban ecological research can be used in strategic urban management in the future. Applied Urban Ecology: A Global Framework is an advanced textbook for students, researchers and experienced practitioners in urban ecology and urban environmental research, planning, and practice.
