Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All revolutionary movements since 1789 have looked instinctively to the French model. In this book, Bill Mc Cormack demonstrates that the French influence in Ireland was indeed profound, especially in the years leading up to the Easter Rising. However, it was not the traditions of the Tennis Court Oath or Bastille Day that motivated the Irish rebels, but a new French Catholic nationalism which reached its apogee with the Dreyfus Affair (1895) and which pervaded literature as well as politics. This was a complex reactionary movement, partly religiose, partly royalist, and anti-modern. In Ireland, its influence was advanced through the thought of individual visitors, through Catholic teaching orders, and through a vigorous periodical press. The 'blood sacrifice' rhetoric of Patrick Pearse and (eventually) James Connolly owes more to Maurice Barres than to Wolfe Tone. Connolly's use of the sympathetic strike derives from Georges Sorel's syndicalism. Mc Cormack examines how the formerly anti-clerical Irish Republican Brotherhood was in effect re-baptised by a French-inspired Catholic mission, which even absorbed Pearse's English and agnostic father. He explores the wealth of French material published by Thomas MacDonagh and J. M. Plunkett in The Irish Review (1911-1914), and traces the long campaign of The Catholic Bulletin to convert the rebel dead into martyrs. Finally, he discusses how the anti-democratic undertow of 1916 breaks out again in 1939 with the IRA's bombing campaign in England.

Book excerpt: They were born in the same region, went to the same schools, fought the same fights and made the same mistakes in youth. They share the same morals, the same fantasies of success and the same taste for money. They act behind the scenes to help each other, boosting careers, monopolizing business and information, making money, conspiring and, why not, becoming Presidents! From Corsica, the Corree, Auvergne, Brittany and Savoy, former "collaborationists" and free-masons; homosexuals and aristocrats; tax inspectors and ex-Trotskyites; hunters and golfers; Jews and Protestants ... they all belong to a network, and sometimes to several. Multiple and unofficial, these places of complicity draw a hidden geography of French society. They explain more surely than official communiques the decisions, the nominations, the transactions that take place. To write this secret history of networks, Sophie Coignard and Marie-Thérèse Guichard questioned actors and observers of these secret solidarities in every milieu, every region, every class. From the "Make Yourself Comfortable" brotherhood to the laundry "gang." the mountain "red necks" to the "brothers" of the Mediterranean Coast, from the clan from the Charente to the club of new capitalists, heirs to the thieves' cloaks to plotters in priests' cassocks ... they lift the veil from all these subterranean understandings which glue together France.

Book excerpt: While it is generally acknowledged that Russia’s culture has been influenced by France, the present study goes beyond the Francophile preferences of the noble elite and examines Russian society more broadly, exploring those elements of French cultural influence that are still relevant today. This is done through an historical analysis of French loanwords in the Russian language from the time of Peter the Great to the present. The result of this lexical analysis and subsequent study of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century archival, periodical, and memoir material is to empirically link Russia’s present culture to two major Franco-Russian events: the wave of immigration to Russia following the French Revolution and Russia’s war with Napoleon. This is primarily a book for those interested in European history, particularly imperial Russia, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. The study of Russian officer memoirs includes original campaign maps, which may be of interest to military historians. The analysis of periodical literature will likewise be a resource for those studying the history of printing, publishing, and journalism in Russia. The book’s interdisciplinary nature, however, broadens its relevance to linguists, cultural historians, and those in the emerging field of Immigration Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlas of African Affairs is divided into five sections dealing with environmental, historical, political and economic issues and with Southern Africa. Throughout, the book presents an interdisciplinary, integrated perspective on African affairs. Most of the chapters deal with continent-wide themes and are illustrated by maps of Africa as a whole drawn to a standardised outline of the same map projection and scale. Other chapters, often by way of example, discuss parts of the continent or individual countries and are illustrated with appropriate maps. The basic format of integrated text and maps is supplemented by guides to further reading at the end of each section as well as a series of detailed statistical tables at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: CONTROVERSY WOULD BE A BETTER TITLE FOR THIS BOOK. Much like those that first said the world was round! ...This book states: DAIRY AND WHEAT PRODUCTS ARE THE TWO WORST THINGS YOU CAN EAT! They Are The Direct Cause of: Facial Wrinkles Early In Life; Premature Aging With Reduced Physical Capabilities, A Shorter Life Span; and Makes Obesity Normal! Dairy And Wheat Products Do Have All The Nutrients Claimed, But They Do Have A Time And Place Where Natures Dictates Their Consumption, Not Science Or Custom. All the same nutrients are available in other foods...you do not have to eat Dairy and Wheat products to get needed nutrients. 39 years of gathering statistics proves this to be correct. Also, if your lifetime diet includes lots of Dairy and Wheat Products with few vegetables and fruit, you will suffer from one or more different kinds of allergies, perhaps even Asthma. You will definitely have eye problems and be prone to developing any non-contagious sickness or disease including cancer, and INCREASE THE ODDS OF PRODUCING CHILDREN WITH BIRTH DEFECTS!
