Book excerpt: The Keweenawan lavas of the Lake Superior area, along with their associated mafic intrusions, are the igneous expression of the North American mid-continent gravity high, which is interpreted to be an aborted continental rift. This publication reports major- and trace-element data for stratigraphic sequences of lavas from the six-kilometre thick Mamainse Point Volcanic Group (eastern Lake Superior) and the three-kilometre thick Osler Volcanic Group exposed on the Black Bay Peninsula (northern Lake Superior). The study was designed to determine whether any similarities exist between the rocks of the Keweenawan Midcontinent Rift and the Siberian Trap at Noril'sk, where intrusions host gigantic nickel-copper deposits. The comparison examines volcanic rocks proximal to a proposed mantle plume (Osler Group) and those distal to the proposed plume (Mamainse Group). Evidence is documented for crustal contamination and limited chalcophile element depletion in the Keweenawan lavas, and these chemical signatures are compared to those of the Permotriassic Siberian Trap lavas. The mineral potential implications of the similarities are discussed.

Book excerpt: This text bridges the gap between the classic texts on potential theory and modern books on applied geophysics. It opens with an introduction to potential theory, emphasising those aspects particularly important to earth scientists, such as Laplace's equation, Newtonian potential, magnetic and electrostatic fields, and conduction of heat. The theory is then applied to the interpretation of gravity and magnetic anomalies, drawing on examples from modern geophysical literature. Topics explored include regional and global fields, forward modeling, inverse methods, depth-to-source estimation, ideal bodies, analytical continuation, and spectral analysis. The book includes numerous exercises and a variety of computer subroutines written in FORTRAN. Graduate students and researchers in geophysics will find this book essential.

Book excerpt: This edited work contains the most recent advances related to the study of layered intrusions and cumulate rocks formation. The first part of this book presents reviews and new views of processes producing the textural, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of layered igneous rocks. The second part summarizes progress in the study of selected layered intrusions and their ore deposits from different parts of the world including Canada, Southwest China, Greenland and South Africa. Thirty experts have contributed to this update on recent research on Layered Intrusions. This highly informative book will provide insight for researchers with an interest in geology, igneous petrology, geochemistry and mineral resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supercontinent-cycle hypothesis attributes planetary-scale episodic tectonic events to an intrinsic self-organizing mode of mantle convection, governed by the buoyancy of continental lithosphere that resists subduction during the closure of old ocean basins, and the consequent reorganization of mantle convection cells leading to the opening of new ocean basins. Characteristic timescales of the cycle are typically 500 to 700 million years. Proposed spatial patterns of cyclicity range from hemispheric (introversion) to antipodal (extroversion), to precisely between those end members (orthoversion). Advances in our understanding can arise from theoretical or numerical modelling, primary data acquisition relevant to continental reconstructions, and spatiotemporal correlations between plate kinematics, geodynamic events and palaeoenvironmental history. The palaeogeographic record of supercontinental tectonics on Earth is still under development. The contributions in this Special Publication provide snapshots in time of these investigations and indicate that Earth’s palaeogeographic record incorporates elements of all three end-member spatial patterns.
