It was the object of the author to give appropriate idea for judicious exploitation of mineral resources of the country as enunciated in the national Mineral Policy, 1993 and the regulatory framework of mines and minerals legislation such as Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. 1957, Mineral Concession Rules, 1960, Mineral Conservation and Development Rules, 1988, Legislation on offshore mining etc. Keeping in mind the desired goal i.e. socio-economic development of the country, social security legislations related to mine workers and their family and legislations related to environmental protection for sustainable development have been discussed in separate chapters. Salient features of different legislations including amendments upto December, 2003 are discussed and analysed in the back drop of critically contribution made in social, environmental and economic development of the country by mining and allied industries. An effort has also been made to find out gaps and possible approach for bridging them in the last chapter of the book devoted to Musing and Need of the day under Epilogue. In short the author presented the existing status and also comprehensive overview of all aspects of mining vis a vis development within the country's mineral policy and legislative framework.

Common examples include copper used in electrical wiring and titanium used to make airplane frames and paint pigments. The Information Age has ushered in a number of new mineral uses in a number of products including cell phones (e.g., tantalum) and liquid crystal displays (e.g., indium). For some minerals, such as the platinum group metals used to make cataytic converters in cars, there is no substitute. If the supply of any given mineral were to become restricted, consumers and sectors of the U.S. economy could be significantly affected. Risks to minerals supplies can include a sudden increase in demand or the possibility that natural ores can be exhausted or become too difficult to extract. Minerals are more vulnerable to supply restrictions if they come from a limited number of mines, mining companies, or nations. Baseline information on minerals is currently collected at the federal level, but no established methodology has existed to identify potentially critical minerals. This book develops such a methodology and suggests an enhanced federal initiative to collect and analyze the additional data needed to support this type of tool.

Book excerpt: For too long Africa's mineral fortune has been lamented as a resource curse that has led to conflict rather than development for much of the continent. Yet times are changing and the opportunities to bring technical expertise on modern mining alongside appropriate governance mechanisms for social development are becoming more accessible in Africa. This book synthesizes perspectives from multiple disciplines to address Africa’s development goals in relation to its mineral resources. The authors cover ways of addressing a range of policy challenges, environmental concerns, and public health impacts and also consider the role of globalization within the extractive industries. Academic research is coupled with key field vignettes from practitioners exemplifying case studies throughout. The book summarizes the challenges of natural resource governance, suggesting ways in which mining can be more effectively managed in Africa. By providing an analytical framework it highlights the essential intersection between natural and social sciences, central to efficient and effective harnessing of the potential for minerals and mining to be a contributor to positive development in Africa. It will be of interest to policy makers, industry professionals, and researchers in the extractive industries, as well as to the broader development community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for mineral resources (iron ore, cement, etc.) has increased substantially in recent years, a development which can be traced back to the economic growth of heavily populated newly industrializing countries. More than fifty percent of the total world population is now interested in the same resources. This change of structure has caused enormous price increases on international commodity markets. In Europe this process can also be noticed in shortages of some mineral resources. National mineral resources policies play a decisive role here, and developing special policies is vital to creating a mineral resources strategy and ensuring a competitive mining industry. This book discusses the mineral resources policies and strategies of important mineral resources importing and exporting countries, examines the status quo of European mineral resources policy and puts forward proposals for the implementation of such a policy for discussion.
