How do the answers to these questions shape the assumptions which it is legitimate to make in social explanation and political evaluation? These are the broad-ranging issues which Pettit addresses in this novel study. The Common Mind argues for an original way of marking off thinking subjects, in particular human beings, from other intentional systems, natural and artificial. It holds by the holistic view that human thought requires communal resources while denying that this social connection compromises the autonomy of individuals. And, in developing the significance of this view of social subjects--this holistic individualism--it outlines a novel framework for social and political theory. Within this framework, social theory is allowed to follow any of a number of paths: space is found for intentional interpretation and decision-theoretic reconstruction, for structural explanation and rational choice derivation. But political theory is treated less ecumenically. The framework raises serious questions about contractarian and atomistic modes of thought and it points the way to a republican rethinking of liberal commitments.

The emotion of Love is a good example of the impracticability of classifying emotions according to their degrees of complexity; for under this one title are included every grade of feeling, from the simplest to the most compound. Underlying all its varieties there is the fundamental substructure of physiological craving, just as underlying every landscape there is the bare earth; and just as in some landscapes there is nought but bare or lichen-crusted rock, so in some natures there is nothing or little besides this craving. In other natures this substructure is covered and hidden by a luxuriant growth of higher forms of feeling - the appreciation of beauty, admiration, emulation, self-esteem, pride, vanity, self-devotion; the desire (or the fulfilled gratification) of sympathy, of confidence, of being highly appreciated, of possession, of power, and much else. So that, although these feelings are massed and consolidated into one grand emotion, and may properly be considered as a single complex feeling, yet this feeling so constituted shades insensibly into, and must in any classification be included under the same title with, the simple physiological craving - a feeling from which it differs as the tropical luxuriance of a Brazilian forest differs from the lichen-covered rocks of Spitzbergen. The one is primitive, simple, undeveloped, the other highly derivative, complex and compound. They are at opposite ends of the scale of complexity, of abstractness, of representativeness; yet they must be classed together. The emotion of Jealousy need not detain us, the circumstance which arouses it being of sufficiently obvious character; but some notice of Modesty is demanded by the fact that in origin it is the most obscure and inexplicable of all the feelings. Strictly speaking, Modesty can scarcely be called a feeling. That the name is correctly applied to a phase of conduct is manifest, but it is not so much itself a feeling as the tendency to a feeling. It is the tendency to embarrassment in sexual matters, Embarrassment being the feeling corresponding with the discovery by others of that which we wish to conceal. If we make an effort to rid ourselves of the familiarity of the notion, and try to look upon it as a fact new in our experience, it will appear extremely strange that the sexual function should be kept wrapped in a cloud of mystery of our own creation. Notwithstanding his great mathematical talent, it was primarily logic and philosophy that engaged his interests, and he wrote original and important contributions to logic, semantics, epistomology, probability theory, philosophy of science, and economics, in addition to seminal work in the foundations of mathematics.

Book excerpt: For many, the word 'pleasure' conjures associations with hedonism, indulgence, and escape from the life of the mind. However little we talk about it, though, pleasure also plays an integral role in cognitive life, in both our sensory perception of the world and our intellectual understanding. This previously important but now neglected philosophical understanding of pleasure is the focus of the essays in this volume, which challenges received views that pleasure is principally motivating of action, unanalyzable, and caused, rather than responsive to reason. Like other books in the Oxford Philosophical Concepts series, it traces the development of the focal idea from ancient times through the 20th century. The essays highlight points of departure for new lines of inquiry rather than attempting to provide a full picture of how the idea of pleasure has been explored in philosophy. The volume begins by showing how Plato, Aristotle, early Islamic philosophers, and philosophers in the Medieval Latin tradition, such as Aquinas, honed in on the challenge of unifying the variety of pleasures so that they fall under one concept. In the early modern period, philosophers shifted from understanding the logic of pleasure to treating pleasure as a mental state. As the studies of Malebranche, Berkeley and Kant show, the central problem becomes understanding the relation of pleasure to other sensory experiences, and the role of pleasure in human cognition and knowledge. Short interdisciplinary reflections interspersed between essays focus on art of 16th and 17th century textbooks and the difficult music of composers like Bach, which demonstrate translation of these concerns to cultural production in the period. As the essay on Mill shows, the 19th century development of scientific psychology narrowed the definition of pleasure, and so its philosophical focus. Contemporary accounts of pleasure, however, in both philosophy and psychology, are now recognizing the limitations of this narrow focus, and are once again recognizing the complexity of pleasure and its role in human life.

There are special problems about the term "British" in the twentieth century, partly because of human migration, partly because of decolonialization and the changing denotation of the term. The intention has been to include not only those who were British subjects at least for a significant part of their lives (even if they mostly lived outside what is now the U.K.) but also people who spent a significant part of their lives in Britain itself, irrespective of their nationality or country of origin. In the first category are included, for instance, a number of people who were born and educated in Britain but who subsequently taught in universities abroad. In the second category are included those who were born elsewhere but who came to Britain and contributed to its philosophical culture.
