Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with teleology, truth, predication, knowledge and belief, universals, body and mind, soul, and reason. Its approach is integrative, scholastic and analytic. Teleology is required for causality, truth and reason. Where the measure is an end, things measure mind in theoretical truth and mind measures things in practical truth. Truth in Mind draws our reasoning to it as an end. Predication shows how the problem of universals arises and how it is solved. It also impacts the problem of body and mind in that only the hylomorphic assay of persons admits the predicable relations. Reason exemplifies dialectical thought in the syllogism.

Book excerpt: A non-reductionist account of mind and agency claiming that common-sense psychological explanations are teleological and not causal. Using the language of common-sense psychology (CSP), we explain human behavior by citing its reason or purpose, and this is central to our understanding of human beings as agents. On the other hand, since human beings are physical objects, human behavior should also be explicable in the language of physical science, in which causal accounts cast human beings as collections of physical particles. CSP talk of mind and agency, however, does not seem to mesh well with the language of physical science. In Teleological Realism, Scott Sehon argues that CSP explanations are not causal but teleological--that they cite the purpose or goal of the behavior in question rather than an antecedent state that caused the behavior. CSP explanations of behavior, Sehon claims, are answering a question different from that answered by physical science explanations, and, accordingly, CSP explanations and physical science explanations are independent of one another. Common-sense facts about mind and agency can thus be independent of the physical facts about human beings, and, contrary to the views of most philosophers of mind in recent decades, common-sense psychology will not be subsumed by physical science. Sehon defends his non-reductionist account of mind and agency in clear and nontechnical language. He carefully distinguishes his view from forms of "strong naturalism" that would seem to preclude it. And he evaluates key objections to teleological realism, including those posed by Donald Davidson's influential article "Actions, Reasons and Causes" and some put forth by more recent proponents of causal theories of action. CSP, Sehon argues, has a different realm than does physical science; the normative notions that are central to CSP are not reducible to physical facts and laws.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand Narrative of Christianity that the Bible created is dead, and the Bible is silent. Does the Bible have anything relevant to say to our modern circumstances? We ask, where did God come from? What happened to God? God's Autopsy reinterprets soul and God as historical-psychological phenomena related to the cultural structure of consciousness, the invisible shared context of thought, which has changed dramatically over the past three millennia. This book offers a new way to understand the trajectory of Western civilization by making the implicit foundation of Western consciousness--soul--visible and conscious. Our modern Western consciousness is radically different from that of antiquity when the Bible emerged. Jung's psychological-philosophical insight that whenever we speak about the psyche it is the psyche speaking about itself, leads to the realization that today consciousness has come home to itself. Beginning with preliterate polytheism, the emergence of the transcendent god Yahweh and Christ, which led directly to the Enlightenment, objective soul continues to unfold itself. How did late modernity become a topsy-turvy, quantum, virtual, digital, impersonal, and abstract world that appears to be running away from us? The answer is unexpectedly and shockingly in the Bible itself.

Book excerpt: From The Princeton Theological Review, Volume 4: THIS monograph is an able and abstract essay designed to support the thesis that the World, the Bible, Conduct and Creed, and the Church each stands for an Intention which is as yet partially and imperfectly realized, but which is on the slow way of progress to its final fulfillment. As Prolegomena, we have extended treatises upon ''The Supernatural'' and upon' 'The Ordinates of Revelation.'' In the discussion of these ''Ordinates'' is developed what we should call the most striking thought in the book. As a question of form, we should say that the author made a mistake in introducing his discussion of this subject with an illustration which is so intricate and technical that to most minds it will poorly serve his purpose to illustrate. This is the illustration: "The ordinates of a point are those distances upon two lines at right angles to each other, from which lines produced until they intersect determine the position of the point in a plane" (pp. 53, 51). The truth which the author intends to illustrate by this is that the ordinates of revelation are need and desire. "On what we shall term the anthropistic side, need determines its own revelation and desire its own; on what we call the theopistic side, need and desire do the same. But when in anthropism need is strong, desire subordinate, in theopism need is subordinate and desire is strong; vice versa, when in anthropism desire is strong, need subordinate, in theopism desire is subordinate and need is strong" (p. 56). Accordingly, from man's standpoint, the Old Testament revelation was necessary and the New Testament revelation was desirable; while from God's standpoint, vice versa, the Old Testament revelation was desirable and the New Testament revelation was necessary. This is a suggestive seed-thought, and while the idea may not stand on all fours, it has enough in it to commend itself for thoughtful consideration. The author's psychological study of "Intention" is sane and thorough, and his application of the principles of it to the Divine Mind is in the interest of a modernly interpreted teleology.... ...Of course, the greater the distance between what is and what is to be, the larger the field for the display of this element of Intention and of its gradual realization; and when any writer is so completely possessed by any one idea as this writer is with that of'' Intention,'' he will be very likely to yield to the temptation to subordinate too much to that one favorite and comprehensive category.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work argues that teleological motives lie at the heart of Kant’s critical philosophy and that a precise analysis of teleological structures can both illuminate the basic strategy of its fundamental arguments and provide a key to understanding its unity. It thus aims, through an examination of each of Kant’s major writings, to provide a detailed interpretation of his claim that philosophy in the true sense must consist of a teleologia rationis humanae. The author argues that Kant’s critical philosophy forged a new link between traditional teleological concepts and the basic structure of rationality, one that would later inform the dynamic conception of reason at the heart of German Idealism. The process by which this was accomplished began with Kant’s development of a uniquely teleological conception of systematic unity already in the precritical period. The individual chapters of this work attempt to show how Kant adapted and refined this conception of systematic unity so that it came to form the structural basis for the critical philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient origins of teleological concepts are sometimes either conveniently forgotten or given a distorted appearance. On the one hand, ancient teleology has been obscured by the theological cloak of creationism. On the other, Darwinists have sometimes failed to give due consideration to the variety and subtlety of teleology's intellectual antecedents. The purpose of this book is to restore the balance by looking at the manifold ways in which teleology in antiquity was viewed. The volume, consisting of twelve essays by leading authorities in their fields, examines the ways in which teleological arguments were used in antiquity and how these discussions inform and influence current debates on evolution, creationism and intelligent design. As well as examining philosophical contributions to the subject, a specific aim is to examine ancient medical thinking on this topic and its relationship to ancient philosophical ideas.
