Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Matter and Motion: With Directions for Good Health in Old Age When sixty years of my life had passed away I felt that the infirmities of old age were gradually approaching. An inclination to stoop and bend down, with a pressure on my shoulders, were indications that a great change was coming. I then resolved to throw off, if possible, this relentless oppressor of our mental and physical powers. I commenced some new scientific studies, and resorted to new physical exercises. Here I had to exercise my Mind and to deal with Matter and keep in Motion, and this suggested the title for my book: Mind, Matter And Motion. I do not contemplate mind in its metaphysical relation to all existing things, but view it as the intellectual or intelligent power in man, by which he arrives at conclusions which control his actions. Book Synopsis Mind-Matter Interaction by : Pamela Rae Heath, M.D.
Download or read book Mind-Matter Interaction written by Pamela Rae Heath, M.D. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of the mind to influence the physical world has long been debated, debunked, studied for military applications, and used in science fiction. This historical and theoretical study of mind-matter interaction, or MMI, explores the phenomena of levitation, stigmata, inedia, paranormal activity, bilocation, fire immunity, luminosity, and the teleportation of matter. The results of more than a century of formal experimental research are discussed, as are resultant training techniques, theories, and controlled experiments used to test or bolster psychokinetic abilities.

Book Synopsis Mind, Matter and Quantum Mechanics by : Henry P. Stapp
Download or read book Mind, Matter and Quantum Mechanics written by Henry P. Stapp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scientists other than quantum physicists often fail to comprehend the enormity of the conceptual change wrought by quantum theory in our basic conception of the nature of matter," writes Henry Stapp. Stapp is a leading quantum physicist who has given particularly careful thought to the implications of the theory that lies at the heart of modern physics. In this book, which contains several of his key papers as well as new material, he focuses on the problem of consciousness and explains how quantum mechanics allows causally effective conscious thought to be combined in a natural way with the physical brain made of neurons and atoms. The book is divided into four sections. The first consists of an extended introduction. Key foundational and somewhat more technical papers are included in the second part, together with a clear exposition of the "orthodox" interpretation of quantum mechanics. The third part addresses, in a non-technical fashion, the implications of the theory for some of the most profound questions that mankind has contemplated: How does the world come to be just what it is and not something else? How should humans view themselves in a quantum universe? What will be the impact on society of the revised scientific image of the nature of man? The final part contains a mathematical appendix for the specialist and a glossary of important terms and ideas for the interested layman. This third edition has been significantly expanded with two new chapters covering the author's most recent work.

Book Synopsis Philosophy of Science and the Occult by : Patrick Grim
Download or read book Philosophy of Science and the Occult written by Patrick Grim and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1990-07-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book both introduces the philosophy of science through examination of the occult and examines the occult rigorously enough to raise central issues in the philosophy of science. Placed in the context of the occult, philosophy of science issues become immediately understandable and forcefully compelling. Divergent views on astrology, parapsychology, and quantum mechanics mysticism emphasize topics standard to the philosophy of science. Such issues as confirmation and selection for testing, causality and time, explanation and the nature of scientific laws, the status of theoretical entities, the problem of demarcation, theory and observation, and science and values are discussed. Significantly revised, this second edition presents an entirely new section of quantum mechanics and mysticism including instructions from N. David Mermin for constructing a device which dramatically illustrates the genuinely puzzling phenomena of quantum mechanics. A more complete and current review of research on astrology has been included in this new edition, and the section on the problem of demarcation has been broadened.

Download or read book Minds in Motion written by Anne M. Thell and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central claim of Minds in Motion is that British travel writing of the long eighteenth century functions as an epistemological playing field where authors test empiricist models of engagement with the world while simultaneously seeking out the role of the self and the imagination in producing knowledge. Whether exploring the relationship between the senses and the mind, the narrative viability of experimental detachment, or the literary dynamics of virtual witnessing, eighteenth-century travel authors persistently confront their positionality and raise difficult questions about the nature and value of first-hand experience. In one way or another, they also complicate empiricist ideals by exploring the limits of individual perception and the role of the imagination in generating and relating knowledge. While the genre is often viewed as either numbingly documentary or non-literary and commercial, travel literature actually operates at the front line of the period’s intellectual developments, illustrating both how individual writers grapple with philosophical ideals and how these ideals filter into the lives of ordinary people. Indeed, travel literature directly engages the scientific and philosophical concerns of the period, while it is also widely, avidly read; as such, it offers models for cognitive and rhetorical practices that are evaluated and either embraced or rejected by readers (in a process of identification not unlike that which occurs in early English fiction). Moreover, because eighteenth-century travel literature is so crucial to the development of so many fields—from botany to the novel—it illustrates vividly the divisive energies of discipline and genre formation while also archiving the shared aims and methods of what will become discrete fields of study. Travelogues as diverse as Margaret Cavendish’s Blazing World (1666) and Samuel Johnson’s Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland (1775) reveal the epistemological circuitry of the eighteenth century and historicize the absorption of the philosophical tendencies that have come to define modernity.
