But long-buried memories of a childhood incident keep interrupting her plans, affecting her health one way after another. And when will she actually date someone her friends think is good enough for her? Ambitious Astrid Ericcson thinks she wrote the book on How to Get Ahead by Flirting. But she is forced to re-visit her career advancement strategy when her PR agency boss takes the innuendos to a whole new level, threatening her job and her safety. The two frenemies-turned-real-friends reach new highs and lows in life, work and romance, while struggling to make sense of the relationships that torment them. In the end, they realize “almost” counts in much more than horseshoes and hand grenades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling an important gap in the literary world, The Richard Peabody Reader is a wide-ranging selection of this great writer's poetry and prose. As a publisher, Peabody's steadfast dedication to that which is new, challenging, innovative, and dynamic has won him a wide reputation among writers whose work he has championed. This volume demonstrates those same values, embodied in nearly four decades of fiercely smart, sophisticated, and often very funny writing. From his first collection of poems, I'm in Love with the Morton Salt Girl, to his most recent collection of short stories, Blue Suburban Skies, Peabody has established and developed a thoroughly unique voice, both warm and piercing, to deliver content that ranges from the hilarious, as in the short story "Flea Wars," to the bittersweet, as in the poem "The Other Man is Always French," to the elegiac, as in the poem in "Civil War Pieta," to the absurd, as in the rollicking farce of the short story, "Bad Day at Ikea." Peabody's aesthetic is all-embracing—strands of punk, beat, experimental, feminist, and political protest literary influences blend with the purely romantic to create a body of work that is both profound and pleasing.

Book excerpt: After almost twenty years, Emery Hazard finally has the man he loves. But things with his boyfriend and fellow detective, John-Henry Somerset, are never easy, and they’ve been more complicated lately for two reasons: Somers’s ex-wife and daughter. No matter what Hazard does, he can’t seem to get away from the most important women in his boyfriend’s life. While Hazard struggles with his new reality (changing dirty diapers, just to start), a bizarre murder offers a distraction. John Oscar Walden, the leader of a local cult, is found dead by the police, and the case falls to Hazard and Somers. The investigation takes the two detectives into the cult’s twisted relationships and the unswerving demands of power and faith. But the deeper Hazard looks into the cult, the deeper he must look into his own past, where belief and reason have already clashed once. And as Hazard struggles to protect the most vulnerable of Walden’s victims, he uncovers a deeper, more vicious plot behind Walden’s murder, and Hazard finds himself doing what he never expected: racing to save the killer. Only, that is, if Somers doesn’t need him to babysit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often called the ”Pulp Era”, the years between the two World Wars have seen a tremendous surge in interest among wargamers. A World Aflame captures the adventurous nature of the time period to present a fun, fast-paced set of tabletop miniatures rules that can handle the many diverse conflicts of the period, from the Chinese Civil Wars and the “Great Game” in Central Asia, to the Irish War of Independence and the bitter ideological warfare of the Russian and Spanish Civil Wars. The rules also contain options for the “Very British Civil War”. This gaming trend has sprung up in recent years, following a “what-if” scenario that has Edward VIII refusing to abdicate the throne, thrusting the country into civil war in 1938. It is a quirky, fun setting, and one that is surprisingly popular. Written by a life-long wargamer, A World Aflame focuses on the daring and heroism of battles fought in the last great era of adventure.

Book excerpt: Frank, and his fellow operatives were kept busy on earth, protecting the inhabitants from each other, since many people were affected by mind altering rays, and these people were made to think that they were fighting for a cause. Janes, Kate, Chris and Louise continued to grow with their newly acquired powers which were far stronger than those of regular operatives. In fact, the group grew to twelve, four from another planet and they were soon involved with missions to protect both earth and particularly the planet Tishog. This group soon became known as the Hymaidem, and each member were sworn to secrecy because of their advanced powers. James discovers the Head Quarters for the Deltrum group on Earth, and helps to defuse its potential powers on Earth. Louise is held captive by the group and is saved with James help. Frank learns of James involvement and orders him to never mind travel again, though he does not learn of James true potential. Disruption to civilisation on earth continues, thus keeping the operatives busy. However, it is soon learned that Tishog is a planet that is in grave danger of being invaded. The Hymaidem take action on this planet, and again later, with the operatives from earth, still, keeping their identity hidden. Tishog is saved but the activities on earth increase. The navy is involved with potential destruction of a major city, which requires intervention by the hymaidem. The army too is similarly affected, along with some towns. The operatives are kept very busy and Frank is called to a meeting of the Universal Council to explain what has transpired. Earth seems safe with the increased presence of Trellinian space ships, but why the increased action of mind alteration? Is earth the real target? This is what the operatives and Hymaidem had to solve.

Throughout this time, there have been many trials, tribulations, and difficulties, not only in Emerson's personal life but in his development as a writer as well. From the emotional depths that have been reached throughout those trying years is this; his first book, Afterthoughts and Hand Grenades. Emerson has made many mistakes in his life, probably most of the mistakes a young man can make were made by him and due to this fact he is in a great amount of debt. By purchasing the work to your left not only will you be supporting him but also all of his creditors, loan sharks, and a various assortment of unsavory characters to whom he owes money...Sallie Mae and the IRS greatly appreciate you as well... Another one of those mistakes he's made is writing this bio/description in the third person...so with that being said....I would like to personally apologize for that inconvenience and also say thank you for all of your support.

Book excerpt: It's 1945, and the world is in the grip of war. Hideki lives with his family on the island of Okinawa, near Japan. When the Second World War crashes onto his shores, Hideki is drafted to fight for the Japanese army. He is handed a grenade and a set of instructions: Don't come back until you've killed an American soldier. Ray, a young American Marine, has just landed on Okinawa. This is Ray's first-ever battle, and he doesn't know what to expect -- or if he'll make it out alive. All he knows that the enemy is everywhere. Hideki and Ray each fight their way across the island, surviving heart-pounding ambushes and dangerous traps. But then the two of them collide in the middle of the battle... And choices they make in that single instant will change everything. Alan Gratz, New York Times bestselling author of Refugee, returns with this high-octane story of how fear and war tear us apart, but how hope and redemption tie us together. Reviews for Refugee: "An absolute must read for people of all ages" - Hannah Greendale, Goodreads "Like RJ Palacio's Wonder, this book should be mandatory reading..." - Skip, Goodreads "I liked how the book linked history with adventure, and combined to make a realistic storyline for all three characters" - AJH, aged 11, Toppsta
