Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not with unnoticed irony that the seers of India have likened the human mind to a monkey. For, even as man has evolved and progressed in the outer world, his inner world remains largely fettered by primitive instincts and self- limiting tendencies.... thus preventing his from rising to his true potential, from social animal to transcendental being. Indeed, this mysterious, made to tease mind, while serving at the medium of all activity in the universe, is also the membrane that obstructs man from recognising and expressing his inherent divinity. Drawing on ancient wisdom, Swami Swaroopananda presents, in simple and easy to understand language, an investigation into the nature of the mind, and offers the reader a range of tips and tools to help tame the monkey within. For dedicated seekers of Truth, Swamiji's advice constitutes more than just a metaphorical leash; it is a veritable lifeline to true living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life, the Dalai Lama reveals how learning patience and compassion practices is more essential than ever as we navigate an era of extremism and divisiveness All of the world’s major religions emphasize the importance of love, compassion, and tolerance. This is particularly true in the Buddhist traditions, which unanimously state that compassion and love are the foundation of all paths of practice. To cultivate the potential for compassion and love inherent within us, it is crucial to counteract their opposing forces of anger and hatred. In Perfecting Patience, the Dalai Lama shows how, through the practice of patience and tolerance, we can overcome the obstacles of anger and hatred. He bases his discussion on A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life, the classic work on the activities of bodhisattvas—those who aspire to attain full enlightenment in order to benefit all beings. This book was previously published under the title Healing Anger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if everything you ever wanted isn’t what you actually want? Twenty-something, suit-clad, and upwardly mobile, Joshua Fields Millburn thought he had everything anyone could ever want. Until he didn’t anymore. Blindsided by the loss of his mother and his marriage in the same month, Millburn started questioning every aspect of the life he had built for himself. Then, he accidentally discovered a lifestyle known as minimalism…and everything started to change. That was four years ago. Since, Millburn, now 32, has embraced simplicity. In the pursuit of looking for something more substantial than compulsory consumption and the broken American Dream, he jettisoned most of his material possessions, paid off loads of crippling debt, and walked away from his six-figure career. So, when everything was gone, what was left? Not a how-to book but a why-to book, Everything That Remains is the touching, surprising story of what happened when one young man decided to let go of everything and begin living more deliberately. Heartrending, uplifting, and deeply personal, this engrossing memoir is peppered with insightful (and often hilarious) interruptions by Ryan Nicodemus, Millburn’s best friend of twenty years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTEGRAL HEALTH The Path to Human Flourishing Everyone agrees that the mind/body connection is a critical component in healing and well-being. But how do you activate that connection? Practices like yoga, tai chi, reiki, and various types of meditation relate to and promote that connection, but, in themselves, don't produce the qualitative shift needed for the higher level of extraordinary, integral health. Rather than looking outside ourselves for new remedies, techniques, and programs, Elliott S. Dacher, M.D., says we have to redirect our vision from outside to inside. ''To transform health and life we must shift our gaze inward, where we will find the ever-present source of exceptional health and healing, '' writes Dacher. As an internist for twenty-one years, Dr. Dacher was able to relieve his patients' physical suffering, but he grew more and more frustrated when he wasn't able to address his patients' underlying ailments like disabling fatigue, pervasive anxiety, or unrelenting low-level depression. That led him to seek a second medical education in the East, which spoke to him about wisdom, compassion, the alleviation of needless suffering, and the promotion of sustained health, happiness, and wholeness. This book provides the vision and the map that show how to achieve integral health as well as its many fruits. Based on Ken Wilber's integral theory, that path is holistic, evolutionary, intentional, person-centered, and dynamic as it addresses four aspects of human existence - the inner aspects of the psycho spiritual and the interpersonal and the outer aspects of the biological and the interpersonal. The seeker learns how to deal with and advance through each of the aspects, do an integral assessment of all four aspects, design a personalized program of integral practice, and progress toward integral health. By striving for human flourishing, we become co-creators in an evolutionary leap in health and well-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English translation of a classic treatise on how the Tibetan practice of Dzogchen, or Great Perfection, is in fact the culmination of the path of Mahayana Buddhism. Rongzom Chökyi Zangpo wrote this treatise in the eleventh century during the renaissance of Buddhism in Tibet that was spurred by the influx of new translations of Indian Buddhist texts, tantras, and esoteric transmissions from India. For political and religious reasons, adherents of the “new schools” of Tibetan Buddhism fostered by these new translations cast the older tradition of lineages and transmissions as impure and decadent. Rongzompa composed the work translated here in order to clearly and definitively articulate how Dzogchen was very much in line with the wide variety of sutric and tantric teachings espoused by all the Tibetan schools. Using the kinds of philosophic and linguistic analyses favored by the new schools, he demonstrates that the Great Perfection is indeed the culmination and maturation of the Mahāyāna, the Great Vehicle. The central topic of the work is the notion of illusory appearance, for when one realizes deeply that all appearances are illusory, one realizes also that all appearances are in that respect equal. The realization of the equality of all phenomena is said to be the Great Perfection approach to the path, which frees one from both grasping at, and rejecting, appearances. However, for those unable to remain effortlessly within the natural state, in the final chapter Rongzompa also describes how paths with effort are included in the Great Perfection approach.
