Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of Man Acquired from his Pets provides guideline of the diseases that man may acquire from animals. This book is composed of nine chapters. The chapters are divided broadly into the types of animals kept as pets. This book begins with a general introduction to animal pets. The subsequent chapters deal with diseases acquired from carnivores, birds, and rodents, with a particular emphasis on leptospirosis, which affects rodents, carnivores, farm animals, man and, to a limited extent, birds. These chapters discuss the epidemiology, clinical signs, symptoms and treatment of this infection. These topics are followed by a chapter on Ungulates, which includes farm animals, the occupational hazards of handling large numbers of animals since livestock are in very close contact with the farmer and farm workers. Similarly, the occupational hazards from birds (factory farming) through Newcastle disease, which sometimes affects pet birds (parrots), and other diseases are explored. The remaining chapters concern certain infectious diseases acquired from reptiles, amphibians, fish, and arthropods. This book is of value to practitioners and students, both of human and veterinary medicine, and those interested in animal care.
Download or read book Pinto and Sons written by Leslie Epstein and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1846, young medical student Adolph Pinto witnesses a demonstration of anesthesia and sets off on a lifelong quest to bring "life without pain" to the masses. A darkly comic and sweeping novel in which Pinto endures every tribulation with hope. This ironic comedy by the author of the acclaimed Leib Goldkorn series and King of the Jews follows Pinto, a Hungarian Jew and former medical student, who takes the wrong ship and winds up out West during the craze of the California Gold Rush. Never discouraged, he tries to bring scientific enlightenment to a band of boys from the local Modoc Indian tribe. But strikes and explosions erupt at the nearby gold mine where the Modocs have been enslaved, turning his attempt at utopia into Dante's hell. "A greathearted saga of ambition, hope and loss... Pinto and Sons is a fantastic epic of the heroic age of applied science, a fit book to put on the shelf with the great tall tales of American expansion.... Only lengthy quotation would do justice to the hilarity, the excitement, the passion of this enterprise." — New York Times Book Review "A wild wacky, wonderful novel.... The wonderful affirmation of this novel gives it its final power." — Kevin Starr, Boston Globe

Book Synopsis Lemur Social Systems and Their Ecological Basis by : J. Ganzhorn
Download or read book Lemur Social Systems and Their Ecological Basis written by J. Ganzhorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a steady increase in studies oflemur behavior and ecology. As a result, there is much novel information on newly studied populations, and even newly discovered species, that has not yet been published or summarized. In fact, lemurs have not been the focus of an international symposium since the Prosimian Biology Conference in London in 1972. Moreover, research on lemurs has reached a new quality by addressing general issues in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. Although lemurs provide important comparative information on these topics, this aspect of research on lemurs has not been reviewed and compared with similar studies in other primate radiations. Thus, as did many in the field, we felt that the time was ripe to review and synthesize our knowledge of lemur behavioral ecology. Following an initiative by Gerry Doyle, we organized a symposium at the XIVth Congress of the International Primatological Society in Strasbourg, France, where 15 contributions summarized much new information on lemur social systems and their ecological basis. This volume provides a collection of the papers presented at the Strasbourg symposium (plus two reports from recently completed field projects). Each chapter was peer-reviewed, typically by one "lemurologist" and one other biologist. The first three chapters present novel information from the first long-term field studies of three enigmatic species. Sterling describes the social organization of Daubentonia madagascariensis, showing that aye-aye ranging patterns deviate from those of all other nocturnal primates.

Book Synopsis Short Fiction by : Frank Belknap Long
Download or read book Short Fiction written by Frank Belknap Long and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2024-10-29T02:26:50Z with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Belknap Long started his literary career as a teenager in the 1920s by drawing on his deep appreciation for Edgar Allan Poe; his initial work brought him into the sphere of H. P. Lovecraft, who became a friend and strong influence—so strong, that Long’s short story “The Hounds of Tindalos” was the first story not by Lovecraft’s to be part of the Cthulhu Mythos. By the end of the 1930s Long had turned his hand to science fiction, and this became his primary genre for most of the rest of his long career as a regular in pulp magazines like Weird Tales, Comet, Planet Stories, and Fantastic Universe. While many of his contemporaries moved towards “harder” science fiction, Long’s work focuses on human psychology, often with a streak of the horror of his earlier writing coming through in the loneliness and alien nature of the space travel and worlds featured in his stories. The short stories in this collection are those currently known to have passed into the U.S. public domain, arranged in order of publication. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
