Book excerpt: Millipedes occupy a category of often seen, rarely identified bugs. Few resources geared towards a general audience exist for these arthropods, belying their beauty and fascinating biology. There is still much unknown about millipedes and other myriapods, particularly concerning specific ecological information and detailed species ranges. New species await discovery and description, even here in North America. This situation makes species identification difficult for anyone lucky enough to stumble upon one of these animals: a problem this booklet intends to solve. Information is included on millipede life history, identification, and collecting tips for all ~50 species of Ohio's millipedes.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The expectation of a higher number of disturbance hardy millipedes (orders Julida and Spirostreptida) in a warmer, drier disturbed area vs. a forested area is supported by previous research. This was studied in a maturing (~ 75 years old) mixed hardwood forest in Hocking County, Ohio. In 2003 the forest was disturbed by placement of an underground oil pipeline resulting in the removal of all trees within 15 m of the pipeline. The temperature in the corridor is highly variable and the subsoil is now present on the soil surface. In May 2006, twenty pitfall traps were set along a north-facing hill, half in the pipeline allowance and half in the adjacent forest. In 2006, Cambala annulata and members of order Julida were found in significantly higher numbers (p

Book excerpt: In case you're looking for a one of a kind intriguing pet that is anything but difficult to keep and care for, look no farther than the African monster millipede. Millipedes may look somewhat like creepy crawlies, yet truth be told, they're arthropods-family members of crabs and shrimp. Millipedes don't really have 1,000 legs as their name recommends; they for the most part have somewhere in the range of 100 and 400 (two arrangements of legs for each body fragment). Each time they shed, they develop more body sections that are finished with more legs.

The Biology of Millipedes is the first single-volume review of this important group and covers their ecology, behaviour, physiology, and evolution. This book is essential reading for terrestrialecologists, zoologists, and students taking courses in invertebrate biology. Introductory chapters consider millipede taxonomy and phylogeny, basic anatomy, locomotion, and ecomorphology. Later chapters review feeding and digestion, metabolism, nerves, and neurosecretion, together with all aspects of millipedes in decomposition processes, and their role as pests. Theauthors provide an extremely comprehensive bibliography of research papers and literature.

The authors, who are each experts in the histology of their respective taxa, bring together the most recent information on the topic into a single, complete volume. An accessible resource, each chapter focuses on a single taxonomic group with salient gross and histologic features that are clearly described in the text and augmented with color photographs and greyscale line drawings. The histologic images are from mostly hematoxylin and eosin stained microscopic slides showing various organ systems at high and low magnification. In addition, each chapter provides helpful tips for invertebrate dissection and information on how to process invertebrates for histology. This important book: Presents detailed information on histology of all major groups of invertebrates Offers a user-friendly text that is organized by taxonomic group for easy reference Features high-quality color photographs and drawings, with slides showing histology and gross photographs to demonstrate anatomy Provides details on invertebrate dissection and processing invertebrates for histology Written for veterinary pathologists, biologists, zoologists, students, and other scientists studying these species, Invertebrate Histology offers the most updated information on the topic written by over 20 experts in the field.
