Download or read book Miller Place written by Edna Davis Giffen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated on top of the bluffs facing Long Island Sound, Miller Place is a treasure trove of Long Island history. With the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s, the beaches became a popular holiday and summer camp destination. Initially boardinghouses served vacationers until proprietors opened inns and resorts. Throughout the 20th century, Miller Place attracted vacationers from nearby New York City, including Paul Newman, Arthur Miller, and a young Anjelica Huston. Drawn by its bucolic setting, friendly atmosphere, and career opportunities at nearby Stony Brook University and Hospital, commuters in the 1970s and 1980s expanded and updated vacation homes and developed new lots. As the population grew, the civic-minded residents formed their own high school, fire department, historical society, civic association, and the North Shore Youth Council. Miller Place's historic homes, natural spaces, and strong public schools make the hamlet a desirable place to raise a family.

Book Synopsis Futuristic Cars and Space Bicycles by : Jeremy Withers
Download or read book Futuristic Cars and Space Bicycles written by Jeremy Withers and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the extensive influence of the 'transport revolution' on the past two centuries (a time when trains, trams, omnibuses, bicycles, cars, airplanes, and so forth were invented), and given science fiction's overall obsession with machines and technologies of all kinds, it is surprising that scholars have not paid more attention to transportation in this increasingly popular genre. Futuristic Cars and Space Bicycles is the first book to examine the history of representations of road transport machines in nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century American science fiction. The focus of this study is on two machines of the road that have been locked in a constant, often bitter, struggle with one another: the automobile and the bicycle. With chapters ranging from the early science fiction of the pulp magazine era in the 1920s and 1930s, to the postcyberpunk of the 1990s and more recent media of the 2000s such as web television, zines, and comics, this book argues that science fiction by and large perceives the car as anything but a marvelous invention of modernity. Rather, the genre often scorns and ridicules the automobile and instead promotes more sustainable, more benign, more restrained technologies of movement such as the bicycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild was a national auto design competition sponsored by the Fisher Body Division of General Motors. This competition was for teenagers to compete for college scholarships by designing and building scale model "dream" cars. Held from the 1930s through the 1960s, it helped identify and nurture a whole generation of designers and design executives. Virgil M. Exner, Jr., Charles M. Jordan, Robert W. Henderson, Robert A. Cadaret, Richard Arbib, Elia 'Russ' Russinoff, Galen Wickersham, Ronald C. Hill, Edward F. Taylor, George R. Chartier, Charles W. Pelly, Gary Graham, Charles A. Gibilterra, E. Arthur Russell, William A. Moore, Terry R. Henline, Paul Tatseos, Allen T. Weideman, Kenneth J. Dowd, Stuart Shuster, John M. Mellberg, Harry E. Schoepf, and Ronald J. Will, are among those designers and design executives who participated in the Guild. The book also describes many aspects of the miniature model Napoleonic Coach and other scale model cars the students designed.
Download or read book I Repent written by Caleb Gave Mathis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scriptures repeatedly admonish believers to repentto change the way they think and act. Having grown up in the church, Caleb Mathis was familiar with the word repentance, but not necessarily with its practice. A summer road trip would change all that. Part travel memoir, part personal treatise of faith, this is the sound of a Christ-believing boy straining to grow into a Christ-following man. Each stop along the road trips route revealed a new lesson, another area in which God was demanding repentance. What started as an adventure into the American heartland ended as a voyage into a place infinitely more exotic, beautiful, and dangerous: the human heart. How does a life change? One mile at a time.

Book Synopsis Automobile Heritage and Tourism by : Michael V. Conlin
Download or read book Automobile Heritage and Tourism written by Michael V. Conlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automobile heritage encompasses a complex range of artefacts and activities. Beyond just historic vehicles which are the primary artefacts of this niche, it also includes communities of collectors and enthusiasts, private owners and public institutions, as well as historic motoring environments, literally thousands of museums, exhibitions and car shows throughout the world, and a range of paraphernalia that includes both original and replicated promotional materials, equipment and parts, and guide books. Although automobile heritage has been the subject of some limited research, Automobile Heritage and Tourism is unique in examining its scope and role within tourism. The book looks at a vast array of topics, from the experience of using and collecting old cars, related destination development, automobile heritage and museums, to events such as vintage automobile racing, promotion and social change. It thereby provides a thorough review of the impacts of automobile heritage on tourism. A number of theories provide a framework and are analysed throughout, including those related to the collection, display, exhibition and use of historic automobiles. The title takes a global and interdisciplinary view of the subject with international contributions from both established and emerging scholars in the field. This book adds to the industrial heritage tourism literature and will appeal to a diverse audience, in particular those in the fields of cultural heritage and industrial heritage tourism, but also practitioners involved with the planning, restoration, exhibition and management of automobile heritage attractions and events.
