Book Synopsis U.S. Army Uniforms and Equipment, 1889 by : Quartermaster General of the Army

This book was released on 1986-06-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued. It is a valuable reference for articles used during the 1870s and 1880s, the period of the Indian wars. For much of the nineteenth century, the production of military clothing and equipment was geared to national emergencies. During the Mexican and Civil wars, the hardpressed Quartermaster Department was forced to rely on civilian and, later, European suppliers. A contract system too often resulted in profiteering, inferior goods, and administrative confusion. By 1887 reforms in the system were accompanied by strict specifications for matäriel, which were published by the War Department in 1889 and distributed to fewer than sixty officers in the Quartermaster Department. Never before reprinted, this rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued, from mosquito bars and tent stoves to overalls for mounted men and uniform coat buttons ("the burnishing to be done in the best manner known to the trade"). This valuable reference for articles used by the army during the period of the Indian wars will be of special interest to collectors, historians, archaeologists, curators, and antique dealers.

Book excerpt: British Army Uniforms identifies the uniforms of each regiment of cavalry and infantry from 1751 to 1783, including those worn during the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. This lavishly illustrated book shows how the cut and colouring of the uniforms of the officers, the NCOs and the private soldiers changed over the course of more than thirty years. The survey is divided into four parts. Part one looks at the commonalities of cavalry uniforms and focuses on the uniforms that were appropriate to each regiment. Headwear and horse furniture are also considered. Part two contains a wealth of full-colour plates detailing the uniforms of the Household Cavalry, the Heavy Cavalry and Light Cavalry. Parts three and four cover infantry uniforms, including those of the regiments of Foot Guards, Infant of the Line, Fusiliers and Highland regiments.--Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: View any image of a Tommy and his uniform becomes an assumed item, few would consider where and how that uniform was made. Over 5 million men served on the Western Front, they all required clothing. From August 1914 to March 1919, across all theaters of operations, over 28 million pairs of trousers and c.360 million yards of various cloth was manufactured. Worn by men of all ranks the uniform created an identity for the fighting forces, distinguished friend from foe, gave the enlisted man respect, a sense of unity whilst at the same time stripping away his identity, turning a civilian into a soldier. Men lived, worked, slept, fought and died in their uniform. Using the authors great-grandfather's war service as a backdrop, this book will uncover the textile industries and home front call to arms, the supply chain, salvage and repair workshops in France, and how soldiers maintained their uniform on the front line. Items of a soldiers uniform can become a way to remember and are often cherished by families, creating a tangible physical link with the past, but the durability of cloth to withstand time can create an important legacy. The fallen are still discovered today and remnants of uniform can help to identify them, at the very least the color of cloth or type of hob nail can give the individual his nationality allowing them to be given a final resting place.
