Included are Military Heroes of Guadalupe County; Military Heroes of Guadalupe County, Book II; and Military Heroes of Puerto de Luna. Military Heroes of Guadalupe County, Book III is intended to be representative of the men and women who served their country in time of war. Most of the stories in Book III have been culled from old newspaper archives of the now defunct Santa Rosa News as well as several other New Mexico newspapers. The book is composed of four sections---an Honor Roll, 57 who served in World War II, 6 from the Korean War, and 21 from the Vietnam War. The final section is News about the War. Most of the men and women who are included in Book III were not included in any of the three earlier editions. However, there are several who were in earlier editions that are included with additional new information about their service. There are not any soldiers from World War I in Book III. The Honor Roll is a composite of soldiers from World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam who were killed in action, earned medals for their bravery, received the Purple Heart, or were listed as missing in action. The Honor Roll includes the names of 39 soldiers who made the Supreme Sacrifice. There are also 92 Purple Heart recipients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military Heroes of Guadalupe County is being written to remember the sacrifices made by soldiers from our county over the last century and a half. Included are vignettes about soldiers from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. Though Guadalupe county did not come into existence until 1893, there were soldiers from the area that saw action during the Civil War or moved into the area at a later date. Included in Military Heroes are vignettes about nineteen soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for their country. They died as a result of hostile enemy action. There are also four included who died accidental deaths while serving their country. Three of the four were killed in military airplane crashes. There are five included who earned the Bronze Star, four who received the Silver Star, one who earned the Navy Cross at Pearl Harbor, and one recipient of the nation's highest military honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor. There are also twenty-one who earned a Purple Heart. The medal is presented to those who were wounded in action. It is also awarded to servicemen who were killed in action. Also included are vignettes about servicemen whose deeds may be considered humorous or whimsical, although most are quite serious. Also included in the individual vignettes are photographs of most of the soldiers in Military Heroes. There are also various items of ephemera used to tell their stories. Some of the individual vignettes include messages that may have been sent home, candid pictures, a sailor's last will and testament, and even applications for gravestones. All help tell the grim reality of war. Military Heroes is not intended to be all inclusive but rather to include a cross section of those who served in the military from Guadalupe county and the sacrifices they made in defense of their country. More importantly, many of those included played a very important role in their military service. One of the soldiers played an especially important role in helping to bring World War II to an end. He was on the Enola Gay as it flew over Hiroshima to deliver its payload on that fateful day in August 1945.

Book excerpt: Gaudalupe County traces the history of Guadalupe County from its creation in 1891 by the Territorial Legislature of New Mexico to the present. During that period of time the county has had two county seats and has gone through two name changes. In 1903 the county was renamed Leonard Wood county, in honor of the Spanish American War hero and the county seat was movedd from Puerto de Luna to Santa Rosa. Two years later, in 1905, the Territorial Legislature was asked to change the name of the county back to Guadalupe. The county seat remained in Santa Rosa. Guadalupe County has had four different courthouse. The first one was in Puerto de Luna. The third courthouse was a fine stone masonry building built in 1909. On September 19, 2009, county officials joined with officials from the City of Santa Rosa in a ceremony commemorating the courthouse's centennial. The event marked the conclusion of restoration and renovation efforts to the old courthouse and grounds that had been undertaken by county and city officials. Among those in attendance at the event were U.S. Congressman Harry Teague and state and local officials. Author Daniel B. Flores made a presentation about the history of the county and its courthouses.

Book excerpt: The Supreme Sacrifice, Guadalupe County Soldiers is written as a tribute to the brave soldiers from Guadalupe county that made the Supreme Sacrifice in the four wars fought in the Twentieth Century. Also include in the last part are the men who lost their lives from other causes while serving in the armed force of the United States. The Supreme Sacrifice includes forty-eight soldiers who lost their lives in combat or whose deaths were combat related. Five soldiers from Guadalupe county made the Ultimate Sacrifice in defense of liberty in what we now call World War I. World War II claimed the lives of thirty-two brave soldiers from the county. There were three soldiers who gave their lives during the Korean War. The Vietnam War claimed the lives of eight young men from the county. The forty-eight men who made the Supreme Sacrifice are joined by fourteen soldiers who lost their lives in non-combat related incidents. Each of the sixty men in The Supreme Sacrifice have their own stories told in individual vignettes. Also included for many of the brave soldiers are their pictures and other biographical information about them. The men are all listed in alphabetical order under the war in which they served. The only exception was made for Alexander Bonnyman. He is the first soldier listed in the World War II section because he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for his ultimate sacrifice. Several men also have pictures of their mothers, known as Gold Star mothers. The Gold Star mothers also made a sacrifice when their sons lost their lives fighting for our country in defense of liberty. The Gold Star mothers would have to bear the grief of the loss of their sons for the remainder of their lives. The Supreme Sacrifice is a grim reminder that the freedoms we enjoy were made possible by the members of the Armed Forces who shed their blood and paid the highest price that a soldier can offer---their own lives, the Supreme Sacrifice, also sometimes known as the Ultimate Sacrifice. They were destined not to return to America and their loved ones alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “War, reclamation, and what Tim O'Brien called "the Lives of the Dead" are eternal literary themes for men. Clay Bonnyman Evans has honored that lineage with this masterful melding of military history and personal quest.”—Ron Powers, co-author of New York Times #1 bestsellers Flags of Our Fathers and True Compass, along with No One Cares About Crazy People and others In November 1943, Marine 1st Lt. Alexander Bonnyman, Jr. was mortally wounded while leading a successful assault on a critical Japanese fortification on the Pacific atoll of Tarawa, and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor. The brutal, bloody 76-hour battle would ultimately claim the lives of more than 1,100 Marines and 5,000 Japanese forces. But Bonnyman's remains, along with those of hundreds of other Marines, were hastily buried and lost to history following the battle, and it would take an extraordinary effort by a determined group of dedicated civilians to find him. In 2010, having become disillusioned with the U.S. government's half-hearted efforts to recover the "lost Marines of Tarawa," Bonnyman's grandson, Clay Bonnyman Evans, was privileged to join the efforts of History Flight, Inc., a non-governmental organization dedicated to finding and repatriating the remains of lost U.S. service personnel. In Bones of My Grandfather, Evans tells the remarkable story of History Flight's mission to recover hundreds of Marines long lost to history in the sands of Tarawa. Even as the organization begins to unearth the physical past on a remote Pacific island, Evans begins his own quest to unearth the reclaim the true history of his grandfather, a charismatic, complicated hero whose life had been whitewashed, sanitized and diminished over the decades. On May 29, 2015, Evans knelt beside a History Flight archaeologist as she uncovered the long-lost, well-preserved remains of of his grandfather. And more than seventy years after giving his life for his country, a World War II hero finally came home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastura is a Spanish word meaning pasture, the community being located on rich grasslands in the rolling llanos, plains, of southern Guadalupe County. Pastura owes its existence to the El Paso and & Northeastern railway which came into the area in 1901. Pastura is located on U. S. Highway 54 about nineteen miles southwest of Santa Rosa. It once had several elementary schools located in its vicinity. It also had a post office from 1903-60. Early pioneers in the Pastura area were sheep ranchers or worked for some of the large sheep ranchers in the area. One of the sheep ranchers was the governor of the Territory of New Mexico, Miguel Otero. The entry of the railroad into the area made it easy for the sheep ranchers to transport their sheep and wool. The early railroad was high maintenance and many men from the area worked for the railroad. The economy of Pastura was driven by the sheep industry and the railroad. As the need for workers from the two main methods of employment began to decrease, so did the economy and population of Pastura. Today the Southern Pacific railroad passes through the once thriving village. Pastura was founded in 1901 by employees of the railroad and the Pintada Trading Co., owned by the Charles Ilfeld Co. The company name was later changed to the Pastura Trading Company. Cuentos de la Pastura, tales of Pastura in English, is a collection of vignettes about Pastura and the surrounding area. Most of the vignettes have been culled from old newspaper articles about Pastura and its people. Included in Cuentos are several stories about some of Pastura's military heroes dating back to World War I. The son of a Pastura rancher was killed in a ship board coal dust explosion in WWI. Another sailor from Pastura was killed when his submarine was sunk by Japanese destroyers near the end of WWII. A Pastura soldier made the supreme sacrifice during the Korean War. Many of the vignettes are about the trials and tribulations of some of the early Pastura pioneers. Some of the vignettes are accompanied by photographs which help tell a story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans are aware that Texas gained its independence from Santa Annas Mexico in the 1840s. Mention of the Alamo evokes the familiar names of heroes like Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis. All too often another group of heroes, heroines and patriots who fought and died for the independence of Texas is overlooked. The sacrifices, bravery and valor of that group--the Tejanos, Texans of Hispanic ancestry--are the focus of The Texas Revolution: Tejano Heroes. It was not just at famous battles such as Agua Dulce, Bexar, Goliad, the Alamo and San Jacinto that Tejanos made their mark on Texas history, often giving their lives and fortunes. Long before the arrival of Stephen F. Austin and settlers from the east, Tejanos were fighting for the independence of Tejas or Texas. The first declaration of Texas independence from Spain was issued in April 1813 by Bernardo Guiterrez de Lara. The first, and bloodiest, battle for Texas independence was fought at the battle of the Medina in August 1813. The first formal list of grievances against the Mexican government was issued by several Tejanos, including Juan Seguin and Gaspar Abrego de Flores, in October 1834. Recognition of the courage, abilities and endurance of Tejanos as major emancipators in the Texas Revolution is long overdue, hence this book.
