Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to analyse world military expenditure at the end of the 1980s, and to discuss its political and economic implications. After a decade of unprecedented expansion of international military spending, its level is falling, though modestly. Political developments in Europe and the success of arms control negotiations raise hopes for further reductions. In addition, technological and economic structural disarmament is adding to the pressure for reductions. However, performance has not matched up to promises, and formidable obstacles to defence spending limitations still remain. Military Expenditure surveys recent events and describes the process of change that characterizes international military expenditure, and its determinants, at this time of transformation.

Download or read book Military Expenditure written by Mr.Daniel P. Hewitt and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-05-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Econometric results from an analysis of the determinants of military expenditure in 125 countries during 1972-88 are presented. The dependent variable is the ratio of military expenditure to GDP; included among the explanatory variables are economic and financial indicators, political variables summarizing the form of government, and demographic and geographic features of nations. The results strongly confirm the importance of these variables in explaining cross-country differences in levels of military expenditure.
Book Synopsis Military Expenditures and Economic Growth by :
Download or read book Military Expenditures and Economic Growth written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an exploration of the historical relationship between national economic growth and military expenditures in five "great power" countries: Germany, France, Russia, Japan, and the United States. Using statistical as well as case study methodologies, it examines how each country's military expenditures responded to increases in output levels and rates of growth over the period 1870-1939 and proposes plausible explanations for the relationship in each country. If the historical experience holds true, economic growth in some of the present-day candidates for great-power status will spur them to increase their rate of military expenditure growth and, as a result, their military capabilities. As we show, however, each country is unique, and strong economic growth by no means implies automatic expansion of military spending or capabilities. In fact, the historical record suggests that perceived threats from abroad may be the most significant factor contributing to increases in military expenditure in potential great powers. This distinction is important because policies designed to deter foreign military expansions motivated by ambition may have perverse effects if foreign military expansions are in fact motivated by fear. This report should be of particular interest to policymakers concerned about the prospect of increased military expenditures by large and rapidly growing economies. The research was sponsored by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence and was conducted in RAND Arroyo Center's Strategy, Doctrine, and Resources Program. The Arroyo Center is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the United States Army.
Book Synopsis Military Expenditure Data in Africa by : Wuyi Omitoogun
Download or read book Military Expenditure Data in Africa written by Wuyi Omitoogun and published by SIPRI Research Reports. This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international reporting of military expenditure data for African states is poor in many respects. Figures that are published are often at variance with the socio-economic realities of the countries. This study examines the availability and reliability of official military expenditure data for six countries in West, Central and East Africa, using a combination of interviews with key actors in the military budgeting process and analysis of official documents in the countries selected. The author concludes that data are indeed available in many of these countries but that the quality of the data varies from country to country. Two main factors account for this - the influence of the donors of economic aid, whose insistence that artain certain maximum level of expenditure on defence should not be exceeded has encouraged the manipulation of data by the countries concerned; and the general loss of capacity in several countries to compile the necessary statistics.
Book Synopsis Military Expenditure and Arms Trade by : Ms.Nancy Louise Happe
Download or read book Military Expenditure and Arms Trade written by Ms.Nancy Louise Happe and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-06-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the economic impact of military expenditures and arms trade is frequently hampered by the limited amount of transparent, comprehensive data. Country-specific information can be supplemented, however, by data from multicountry statistical sources. This paper describes seven publications which provide multicountry statistics on military expenditure and trade--the information each source conveys, as well as the differences in coverage and definition--to assist the analyst in understanding how to use this data. Comparisons of the data reported by the various sources reveal numerous, significant differences, particularly in data on military expenditures.

Book Synopsis Military Spending and Global Security by : Jordi Calvo Rufanges
Download or read book Military Spending and Global Security written by Jordi Calvo Rufanges and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global military expenditure reached an estimated $1,822 billion in 2018 and this book questions what that spending responds to and indeed what that entails in terms of global security. The book draws from prior knowledge and research on military expenditure but introduces an all-encompassing, in-depth and original analysis of military spending as a key and often overlooked factor of global instability, delving into the present and future consequences of its perpetual growth, as well as confronting the reasoning behind it. The authors argue that increasing military expenditure is not the best response to the emergencies militarization itself has helped create. They assert that militarization is paradoxically both a cause of and a response to the grave challenges our society is facing. The book explains why people are not well served by nation-states when they continuously seek to out-compete one another in the size and destructive powers of their militaries. It discusses the scope of military spending around the world, while explaining how militarism is linked with conflict and security threats, and how military spending further prevents us from adequately dealing with global environmental problems like climate change. A must-read for scholars, researchers and students from a wide range of disciplines. It will also find an audience among professionals from the third sector and activists working on issues related to peace, security and militarism, as well as social and climate justice.
Book Synopsis Military Spending in Eastern Europe by : Keith Crane
Download or read book Military Spending in Eastern Europe written by Keith Crane and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides military expenditure estimates for the Northern Tier countries of the Warsaw Pact (Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, and Poland) and Hungary, assesses the political and economic factors that determine these spending levels, and discusses the probable course of military spending in these countries over the next several years. These estimates suggest that the defense budgets reported by the East Europeans contain most major components of military spending. A statistical analysis of factors that may determine military spending levels indicates the primary determinant is available resources--i.e., utilized national income. The prospects for large surges in military spending in the next few years are therefore low.
