Nani shook with fear and pointed wildly at the silver markings running up her arm, "Do you know what this means? We have to get away from him!" "I know what it means!" cried Alexi, grabbing her friend by the shoulders. "It means you can't get away from him." When Nani awakens in the jungles of Brazil, she has no idea who she is or how she came to the tiny missionary hospital. But soon she and her new friends are carried away to the world of Milana and soon find themselves under threat from the Hunters of Avoria. As they seek to unravel Nani's past and find their place in a new world, the group is forced to align with one of the Hunters. Can they trust him? Will they offer him a chance at redemption? The first book of The Milana Legends, The Pillar of Light is a Christian fantasy adventure about brave living, redemption, and forgiveness. Discover a thrilling journey through an enchanting world where faith blends with the fantastic. "Much like C.S. Lewis' stories about Narnia, the young people find themselves in a world other than their own with a challenge they must face in order to save themselves, but also to destroy the evil forces. Like Lewis, the author of The Pillar of Light parallels parables from the Bible to develop her plot. This is an exciting story for young people, a story about faith, love and the power of friendship as they work together to combat the many forces of evil." Book excerpt: Power has been a defining and constitutive theme of adult education scholarship for over a century and is a central concern of many of the most famous and influential thinkers in the field. Adult education has been particularly interested in how an analysis of power can be used to support transformative learning and democratic participation. In a fragile and interdependent world these questions are more important than ever. The aim of this collection is to offer an analysis of power and possibility in adult education which acknowledges, analyzes and responds to the complexity and diversity that characterizes contemporary education and society. Power and Possibility: Adult Education in a Diverse and Complex World explores the topic of power and possibility theoretically, historically and practically through a range of perspectives and in relation to varied areas of interest within contemporary adult education. It is concerned with addressing how power works in and through adult education today by exploring what has changed in recent years and what is shaping and driving policy. Alongside this the book explores ways of theorizing learning, power and transformation that builds and extends adult education philosophy. In particular it takes up the themes of diversity and solidarity and explores barriers and possibilities for change in relation to these themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sacrifice is too big for all-consuming love? What is revenge worth? Are there psychological and moral boundaries beyond which passion does not dare to step? Chantal, a woman with irresistible charms, was a clear-minded, very successful journalist when at the age of 28, she married a financial tycoon who convinced her to try a different lifestyle. Jovan, the 42 years old surgeon from Yugoslavia - an extraordinary man both in appearance and in substance, considered his life a journey to wisdom, to discoveries of life’s meaning and purpose. This journey came to an abrupt end when his daughter, a 14 years old beauty, was abducted and killed in a small town in Montenegro in 1995, while the civil war in Yugoslavia was still in full swing. From this moment on, revenge became the purpose of his life, the obsession, the only justification for his existence. At this crossroad, by a sheer chance, he met Chantal in New York: they fell in love with each other. Chantal had to make a terrible choice: leave her loving husband and life of luxury and go after Jovan and her mission in life - journalism, or stay in comfort and lose her first genuine love and mission. Her hesitation was painful but short. Finding killers was a demanding task for Jovan. Police closed the case claiming that hostile Croats abducted his daughter Lilia. The only witness, though, who later refused to testify, said that he saw how local pimps grabbed the girl on the street and ran away in a car. Both versions lacked credibility, as the autopsy concluded that the girl was a virgin. Soon Chantal discovered something not less horrendous than the war and no less important to report about: the East European prostitution ring, which used Yugoslavia as a hub for trafficking adolescent girls from Russia, Ukraine, and Romania to the affluent West European countries and North America. Again, she witnessed terrifying events when innocent and helpless girls had to go through hell during their short and horrific lives. Jovan discovered the secrets of his daughter’s death and found the killers. The revenge was as brutal as the crime which triggered it. The vengeance and the payback for it ruined Chantal’s and Jovan’s love and changed their lives forever.

Book excerpt: After a decade of caring for crazy and keeping her mother’s mental illness a secret from the outside world, twenty-year-old Paolina Milana longs for just one year free from the madness of her home. When she gets the chance to go to an out-of-state school, she takes it, but her family won’t leave her be. Letter after letter arrives, constantly reminding her of the insanity rooted in her family tree. Even worse, the voices in her own head whisper words she’s not sure are normal. “Please don’t make me be like Mamma,” she prays to a God she’s not sure is listening. The unexpected death of her father soon after she returns home leaves Paolina in shock—and in charge of her paranoid schizophrenic mother. But it isn’t until she is twenty-seven and her sister two years her junior explodes in a psychotic episode and, just like Mamma, is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and must be committed, that Paolina descends into her own despair, nearly losing herself to the darkness. Poignant and impactful, Committed is one woman’s story of resilience as she struggles to stay sane despite the madness that surrounds her.

Book excerpt: “Death wasn’t an absolute end, but a further form of being.” Deep within the bowels of an abandoned Cornish mine a covert occult group, known as the Network, protects the living from the dead. Their mediums host a plethora of abilities — from telepathy to astral projection — because of their connection to an energy source called the frequency. Fifteen-year-old Rasha Abadi and her mother are Syrian refugees granted leave to remain in Gorenn Village. The seaside town sprawls with beaches and idyllic coves, but the last thing Rasha finds there is peace. An impossible shadow visits her nightly and infests her mind with memories of the chaos that she and her mother fled in Syria. When she becomes possessed by the shadow, the Network intervenes to save her. The shadow’s wrath knows no bounds and orchestrates a string of interconnected possessions across the south coast. Having survived the shadow, Rasha eagerly offers to aid the Network’s investigation. They must all act quickly to unearth its motive before it disrupts the balance between the living and the dead, and forges a new world from the embers of their own reality. No choice will be easy for Rasha when thwarting a monster means becoming one herself. The Frequency is a paranormal thriller exploring grief in a world where death is just the beginning and where reality can be rewritten. Fans of Stephen King and James Herbert will enjoy this mind-bending, paranormal thriller with LGBTQ+ and POC characters. This is book one in The Imprint Quintet series, a five-part saga following a rag-tag group of mediums as they attempt to thwart an otherworldly tyrant from unleashing paranormal terrorism.

Charlie Thorne is a genius. Charlie Thorne is a thief. Charlie Thorne isn’t old enough to drive. And now it’s up to her to save the world . . . Decades ago, Albert Einstein devised an equation that could benefit all life on earth—or destroy it. Fearing what would happen if the equation fell into the wrong hands, he hid it. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth, English-language history of modern Serbia in nearly half a century. It covers the period from the Serbian state’s revolutionary rebirth in the early nineteenth century, under the rebel leaders Karađorđe Petrović and Miloš Obrenović; its turbulent history of wars, uprisings and dynastic rivalries; the triumph of Yugoslav unification in 1918; and the catastrophe of occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941. It shows how the birth of the modern nation-state involved the creation of a new elite—dynasty, army and bureaucracy—whose rule over the peasantry generated a popular resistance that would ultimately take form in Nikola Pašić’s mighty People’s Radical Party. The resulting struggle between elitist Westernisers and pro-Russian populists became entwined with the struggle for pan-Serb and Yugoslav liberation and unification. These causes came together with the Sarajevo assassination of 1914, which triggered the First World War. Existing histories of the Yugoslav kingdom that emerged from that war focus on the national conflict between Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims and others, but Marko Attila Hoare challenges this narrative. He shows how the new kingdom’s politics continued to be dominated by the ongoing internal Serbian power struggle, bringing renewed disaster to Yugoslavia and its peoples.
