Book excerpt: Romanian Germans, mainly from the Banat and Transylvania, have occupied a place at the very heart of major events in Europe in the twentieth century yet their history is largely unknown. This east-central European minority negotiated their standing in a difficult new European order after 1918, changing from uneasy supporters of Romania, to zealous Nazis, tepid Communists, and conciliatory Europeans. Migrating Memories is the first comprehensive study in English of Romanian Germans and follows their stories as they move across borders and between regimes, revealing a very European experience of migration, minorities, and memories in modern Europe. After 1945, Romanian Germans struggled to make sense of their lives during the Cold War at a time when the community began to fracture and fragment. The Revolutions of 1989 seemed to mark the end of the German community in Romania, but instead Romanian Germans repositioned themselves as transnational European bridge-builders, staking out new claims in a fast-changing world.

References to Europeans’ original migration to the continent have been engaged in social and political conflicts to define who should belong to Australian society, who should gain access, and based on what criteria. These political memories were instrumental in negotiating inherent conflicts in the formation of the Australian Commonwealth from settler colonies to an immigrant society. By the second half of the twentieth century, the Commonwealth employed Australia Day commemorations specifically to incorporate new arrivals, promoting at first citizenship and, later on, multiculturalism. The commemoration has been contested throughout its history based on two distinct forms of political memories providing conflicting modes of civic and communal belonging to Australian politics and policies of migration. Introducing the concept of Political Memories, this book offers a novel understanding of the social and political role of memories, not only in regard to migration.

Upon the arrival in the nineteenth century, almost all of the first emigrants from Guangdong in French Oceania settled and developed family lines. Their descendants do not have same sort fo connections today that their ancestors did, with a China that was then led by the Qing dynasty or Sun Yat-Seng. Is the present generation still to be considered as part of the traditional network of diasporic relations, in the same way as those living in other regions of the world? Sponsored by the Pacific Human Sciences Centre (Maison des Sciences de l'Homme du Pacifique), this book examines this question from a previously unexplored angle, through films and contemporary art of the Chinese diaspora. Beyond a meeting between East and West, midway between what philosopher and sinologist François Jullien called "easy universalism" and "lazy relativism", this book does not question conventional cultural differences. Instead, it explores the play of fertile tensions used for creative and aesthetic representation, by communities that are both separated from and close to a various resources.
