There is, of course, no question that ten or fif teen minutes of vigorous arm-swinging, windmill ing, back and body straining, and side-stretching are an admirable introduction to the day's work just after the bath, or a good preliminary to rest ful sleep, just before retiring, but they are no more to be considered a genuine substitute for a day's exercise, the amount needed to keep you in health, than the cherry in a cocktail is the food equivalent of a pound of beefsteak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Habit and Health: A Book of Golden Hints for Middle Age, Derived From the Works of Eminent Medical Men; With Especial Reference to Ailments Besetting Professional and Business Men at the Present Day The extreme ignorance Of the public generally in these matters, not excepting even the literary and scientific classes, is a fact admitted by all who are capable of judging on the subject, and is, indeed, manifested by evidence of the most abundant and notorious kind, both public and private. The falsest and most absurd notions are entertained respecting the whole subject of the morbid conditions 'of the animal economy, and respecting the means deemed capable of modifying and removing them. If this ignorance of a science and art of which there exist established professors and practitioners, were strictly confined in its effects to the individual minds lodging it, and were, like our ignorance in regard to many of the other practical arts of life, simply passive, there might be a question whether it were of much or of any importance that it should be removed. What greater necessity, it may be said, is there for men in general being eu lightened in the science and art of the physician, than in the science and art of the shoemaker and tailor, of the coach-builder, saddler, or of any of the other handicrafts sub servient to his comfort and 'happiness? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some trainers recommend to their pupils for the training of all muscle groups one and the same (light) weight and believe they are able to obtain the same effect by frequent repetitions. My experience has taught me that this is wrong, for the muscles of men or animals who are distinguished for certain feats of endurance are by no means over-developed. A long-distance runner or long-distance cyclist always has comparatively thin legs, as have a racehorse, stag, or greyhound. Nature does not act without aim and purpose. Hence there is a great difference between feats of endurance and feats of strength. One must consider that, although it is quite possible to enlarge muscles by certain light, prolonged exercises, at the same time the development of the sinews may be neglected, and it is the sinews which transport the action of the muscles to the bone xframe. The sinews can only be exercised and strengthened by correspondingly heavy muscle work. Besides, to take a paradoxical example, it is quite impossible to improve strong muscle groups, as, for instance, the hip muscles, with light-weight exercises. A further illustration of the fallacy of attempting to develop the muscles by frequent repetitions with the same light exercises may be found in a comparison with any and every other form of athletics, in which a man would never think of merely repeating his training programme. In order to improve himself either in pace or distance, he must set himself a steady progression of arduous effort". - George Hackenschmidt This is an original version, restored and re-formatted edition of Hackenschmidt's 1908 classic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instant New York Times Bestseller Uncover the evidence-based science to slowing the effects of aging, from the New York Times bestselling author of the How Not to Die series When Dr. Michael Greger, founder of NutritionFacts.org, dove into the top peer-reviewed anti-aging medical research, he realized that diet could regulate every one of the most promising strategies for combating the effects of aging. We don’t need Big Pharma to keep us feeling young—we already have the tools. In How Not to Age, the internationally renowned physician and nutritionist breaks down the science of aging and chronic illness and explains how to help avoid the diseases most commonly encountered in our journeys through life. Physicians have long treated aging as a malady, but getting older does not have to mean getting sicker. There are eleven pathways for aging in our bodies’ cells and we can disrupt each of them. Processes like autophagy, the upcycling of unusable junk, can be boosted with spermidine, a compound found in tempeh, mushrooms, and wheat germ. Senescent “zombie” cells that spew inflammation and are linked to many age-related diseases may be cleared in part with quercetin-rich foods like onions, apples, and kale. And we can combat effects of aging without breaking the bank. Why spend a small fortune on vitamin C and nicotinamide facial serums when you can make your own for up to 2,000 times cheaper? Inspired by the dietary and lifestyle patterns of centenarians and residents of “blue zone” regions where people live the longest, Dr. Greger presents simple, accessible, and evidence-based methods to preserve the body functions that keep you feeling youthful, both physically and mentally. Brimming with expertise and actionable takeaways, How Not to Age lays out practical strategies for achieving ultimate longevity.
