Book excerpt: In June 1973, Professor George Austin invited a small group of neuroscientists from Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada to the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. The fundamental technique of fashioning a small vessel collateral to the brain had been pioneered by Donaghy and Yasargil 5 years before and was now gaining momentum with the increased availability of the operating microscope, fine instruments and sutures, and surgeons trained in microvascular surgery. The interchange of ideas at this first conference was magic. The handful of participants returned home stimulated with new ideas of technique, patient selection, and postoperative evaluation and resolved to meet again on a regular basis. A Second International Symposium was hosted by Howard Reichman at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois in June of 1974; a Third Symposium at Rottach-Egern, West Germany in June of 1976 under Professor F. Marguth of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich.

A separate part addresses cerebral revascularization for both complex aneurysms and ischemia. All contributions were written by recognized experts and cover original papers presented at the 7th European Japanese Stroke Surgery Conference, held in Verona, Italy in June 2014. The authors present new trends and strategies for managing emerging problems, as well as in-depth discussions on controversial issues in the field.

It also covers complication management and post-operative follow-up care. The book is divided in to three parts; the first part discusses common approaches in neurovascular surgery, describing the steps, indications for and limitations of the approach, as well as the associated complications and how to avoid them. The second part addresses surgical treatment based on pathology, taking the different locations of lesions into consideration. The third part focuses on the technological developments that support neurovascular surgery, which may not be available everywhere, but have been included to help vascular surgeon understand the principles. This book is a guide for young neurosurgeons, neurosurgery residents and neurosurgery fellows, as well as for medical students and nurses who are interested in neurosurgery or are associated with this field in any way. It is also a useful teaching aid for senior neurosurgeons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, exciting new insights into mechanisms and treatment of stroke have been obtained from animal experiments. Hence, the use of animal models to induce stroke are of paramount importance as research tools. While a few articles on this topic have been published in select journals, until now there has not been a systematic technical book available which assists researchers in building upon commonly known knowledge. The Manual of Stroke Models in Rats explains in great detail the methods and techniques for accomplishing different stroke models in rats, as well as some techniques using mice. Expert contributors to this text include the most recent research information available, as well as generally recognized facts, making this volume an imperative tool for those researchers seeking to identify new areas of exploration. The first text in 20 years to detail new techniques in rat stroke models The book begins with a statistical update of stroke in America, and proceeds to discuss the rationale for using ischemic stroke models. Major sections include different surgical models of stroke induced by the occlusion of the distal middle cerebral artery, by intraluminal filament or embolic implantation, by photochemically induced thrombosis, global cerebral ischemia induced by asphyxia cardiac arrest or by four-vessel occlusion, and brain hemorrhage. The book also includes anesthesia procedures, general principles of microsurgery, and a study of microsurgical instruments. Numerous tables, figures, and color images are used to supplement the material. The editor, Dr. Yanlin Wang-Fischer, has published more than 40 scientific articles in various medical journals and contributed to several projects related to animal models and surgeries. In this volume, she brings together contributors who represent the cutting edge of research in the field. By reviewing the methods in this detailed technical treatise, researchers will be armed with the latest strategies in preparing their own experimental stroke models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A step-by-step manual on fundamental microsurgical bypass techniques young neurosurgeons need to master! All neurosurgeons must undergo rigorous training in the laboratory and practice bypass techniques repetitively before performing microneurosurgery on a patient. Microsurgical Basics and Bypass Techniques by Evgenii Belykh, Nikolay Martirosyan, M. Yashar S. Kalani, and Peter Nakaji is a comprehensive yet succinct manual on fundamental laboratory techniques rarely included in clinical textbooks. The resource simplifies repetitive microsurgical practice in the laboratory by providing a menu of diverse, progressively challenging exercises. Step-by-step instructions accompanied by easy-to-understand illustrations, expert commentary, and videos effectively bridge the gap between laboratory practice and operating room performance. The book starts with an opening chapter on four founding principles of microsurgical practice inherited from great thinkers and concludes with a chapter featuring cerebrovascular bypass cases. Chapters 2-8 offer a complete one-week curriculum, with a different lab exercise each day, focused on learning basic microsurgery skills. Key Features Twenty-six videos cover a wide array of topics – from diverse methods for holding instruments and suturing techniques – to end-to-end, end-to-side, and side-to-side anastomosis procedures High quality color illustrations clearly demonstrate basic techniques Practical laboratory exercises include how to organize a microsurgical laboratory, essential training and skills, basic arterial and deep-field anastomoses, kidney autotransplantation, supermicrosurgery, and aneurysm clipping Invaluable tips such as preventing bypass errors and applying laboratory skills to neurosurgical practice This is an essential microsurgical learning and teaching guide for neurosurgical residents on how to perform basic bypass and anastomoses procedures step by step. Part of the Fundamental Skills in Neurosurgery Series, Series Editors: Peter Nakaji, Vadim A. Byvaltsev, and Robert F. Spetzler.

Book excerpt: In July 2004 specialists in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurology and neurointensive care discussed recent trends at the 2nd Swiss Japanese Joint Conference on Cerebral Stroke Surgery, held in Zurich, Switzerland. New concepts were worked out during the conference and are published in this volume. The book starts with the topic intracranial aneurysms, discussing microsurgical and endovascular treatment modalities, as well as new surgical approaches. Further chapters deal with the management of unruptured aneurysms and with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Practical guidelines for vasospasm treatment are given. Together with contributions about arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, cerebral revascularization techniques and surgery related to the intracranial venous system a comprehensive overview about stroke surgery is given with an interdisciplinary approach. The book will be of interest for all specialists involved in therapy of cerebrovascular disease.
