Book excerpt: A look at the current and future uses of magnesium-based products and their role in the world's environmental and technological revolution The lightest of all structural metals, having one-fourth the density of steel and two-thirds that of aluminum, magnesium has already been adopted as an alternative construction material in applications as far ranging as automotive and sports equipment, electronics, and space technology. In a world concerned with minimizing the environmental impact of products, the choice of light-weight, energy-saving, and high-performance materials, like magnesium, would seem a small, significant step towards improving life on this planet. Magnesium, Magnesium Alloys, and Magnesium Composites introduces the science and current applications of this important metal, shedding light on the magnesium-based composites developed over the last fifteen years. Chapters include in-depth discussion of: The characteristics of pure magnesium—including atomic properties and crystal structure as well as physical, electrical, and mechanical properties Magnesium alloys—and the effects of the alloying elements, such as aluminum, lithium, copper, nickel, and silicon The properties of magnesium-based composites—and the effects of different types (metallic, ceramic, interconnected, and intermetallic) of reinforcements of varying length (from micron scale to nanometric length) Corrosion aspects of magnesium-based materials Magnesium-based products in medicine, sports equipment, and the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries Bringing together, for the first time, the science, properties, and technologies relating to the current and future uses of magnesium, this important reference also offers readers a glimpse of a not-too-distant world in which environmental safety and sound engineering are a reality.

Book excerpt: The application of Metal Matrix composites (MMC) spans over a wide range of structural applications owing to its improved mechanical properties namely high specific modulus and high strength to weight ratio when compared to their monolithic metal counterparts. Magnesium having a low density of 1.73 gm/cm3 is approximately two thirds of that of aluminum, one fourth of zinc, and one fifth of steel, allows it offer a very high specific strength among conventional engineering alloys. Three Magnesium alloys based nano reinforced metal matrix composite were fabricated using solidification technique followed by hot extrusion. Magnesium alloy AZ31 was reinforced with alumina particulate (Al2O3p) and carbon nanotubes separately to produce (1) AZ31/1.5 vol% Al2O3 and (2) AZ31/1.0 vol% CNT composites. 3 wt% aluminum was added to AZ91 Mg alloy and reinforced with alumina particulate to synthesize (3) AZ (12)1/1.5 vol% Al2O3 nanocomposite. The test specimens of the composites and the monolithic alloys were precision machined and conformed to the standards specified in ASTM E8/E466. The samples were deformed in tension under strain controlled loading at rate of 0.0001s-1 to obtain the tensile properties. Stress amplitude controlled high cycle cyclic fatigue was carried over a range of maximum stress, at frequency of 5 Hz and at load ratios of 0.1 and -1. The number of cycles to failure were recorded. In this thesis report the effect of reinforcement and processing on the microstructure modification, hardness, tensile properties, stress controlled high cycle fatigue response and micro mechanics of final fracture behavior of the magnesium alloy composite is neatly presented discussed and compared with their unreinforced monolithic alloy counterparts. The elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength of the reinforced magnesium alloys were compared to the unreinforced counterpart. The ductility quantified by elongation to failure over 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) gage length of the test specimen and reduction in cross-section area of the composite were compared to the monolithic alloy. A comparison of fatigue response of the reinforced magnesium alloys with unreinforced counterparts were done to observe improvement in cyclic fatigue life at load ratio of 0.1 and -1. The key mechanisms responsible for the superior cyclic fatigue and tensile behavior of the composite are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research on the design and development of novel, advanced high-strength, light-weight materials via the incorporation of novel reinforcements, namely, metallic amorphous alloys/bulk metallic glasses (BMG), in light metal matrix composites (LMMCs) based on Al and Mg. The book begins with an introduction to conventional ceramic reinforced light metal matrix composites, along with the major drawbacks which limit their application. Metallic amorphous alloys/Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG) are new class of metallic materials that are distinctly differently from conventional metals/alloys in terms of their structure and thermal behavior, and exhibit extremely high strength (1 to 2 GPa) and large elastic strain limit (1 to 2%). Given these unique properties, upon their incorporation into Al/Mg-matrices, they provide superior interfacial properties, i.e. high degree of compatibility with the matrix due to their metallic nature when compared to conventional ceramic reinforcements, and thereby significantly enhance the mechanical performance of LMMCs. Amorphous/BMG reinforced LMMCs is an emerging research field and the existing literature is meager. This book discusses the various processing methods that would be suitable for these novel materials. A comparison of mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms of amorphous/BMG reinforced composites with those of conventional ceramic composites is presented. Future research directions and wider research potential of the novel materials are discussed, and prospective applications are highlighted. For ease of understanding and comparison, appropriate schematics, tables, and figures are provided.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 9.1, SRM University, language: English, abstract: This report presents an overview on the effects of different reinforcements in the magnesium and its alloy, so as to improve their mechanical and metallurgical properties. The morphology of microstructure and its effect on the physical properties of the magnesium is also discussed here. Magnesium matrix composites are potential materials for various applications of aerospace and defense organizations due to their low density, good mechanical and physical properties. The improvement of specific strength, stiffness, damping behavior, wear behavior, creep and fatigue properties are significantly influenced by the addition of reinforcing elements into the metallic matrix compared to the conventional engineering materials.

Book excerpt: The relationship between tensile properties and microstructure of a powder metallurgy aluminum alloy, 2009 was examined. The alloy was investigated both unreinforced and reinforced with 15 v/o SiC whiskers or 15 v/o SiC particulate to form a discontinuous metal matrix composite (MMC). The materials were investigated in the as-fabricated condition and in three different hot-rolled sheet thicknesses of 6.35, 3.18, and 1.8 mm. Image analysis was used to characterize the morphology of the reinforcements and their distributions within the matrix alloy. Fractographic examinations revealed that failure was associated with the presence of microstructural inhomogeneities which were related to both the matrix alloy and to the reinforcement. The results from these observations together with the matrix tensile data were used to predict the strengths and moduli of the MMC's using relatively simple models. The whisker MMC could be modeled as a short fiber composite and an attempt was made to model the particulate MMC as a dispersion/dislocation hardened alloy. Birt, Michael J. and Johnson, W. Book excerpt: The physical and mechanical characteristics of cryomilled Al 5083-boron carbide (Al-B4C) metal matrix composites render them both scientifically interesting and technologically important. Trimodal architectures (containing three components: i) nanocrystalline/ultrafine grains, ii) coarse grains, and iii) ceramic reinforcements) allow for multiple degrees of freedom in the design of the microstructures that can be engineered, for example, to achieve combinations of strength, ductility, and damage resistance that are not attainable with conventional materials. The influence of the nano/ultrafine grains and coarse grains has been extensively studied, but the influence of the reinforcement size and morphology remained relatively unknown. Via cryomilling, which involves mechanical milling in a cryogenic liquid slurry (e.g., nitrogen), and subsequent hot consolidation, novel trimodal composites reinforced with micrometric ([mu]m-), submicron (s[mu]), and nanometric (n-) B4C particles with both faceted and spherical morphologies were fabricated with varying volume fractions of coarse grain phase (0-30%). The microstructural features are investigated in depth, the strengthening mechanisms quantitatively evaluated, and the mechanisms for enhancing strength and/or ductility are discussed. The characteristics of B4C/Al interfaces, namely local chemistry and interfacial structure, were studied in detail and revealed significant differences in these characteristics as a function of particle length scale. n-B4C reinforced composites were observed to have higher strengths, without any loss in deformability, and lower elastic modulus than s[mu]-B4C and [mu]m-B4C reinforced composites due to enhanced damage tolerance and limited load bearing capacity, respectively. Fiber-like arrays of nanoparticle-rich zones containing spherical n-B4C particles embedded in an ultrafine grain Al matrix demonstrated enhanced mechanical response when compared to an equivalent metal matrix composite with a homogeneous distribution of nanoparticles.
