Book excerpt: th This proceedings volume of the 8 International Microchemical Symposium contains the plenary and keynote lectures delivered at the conference. Besides basic and historic aspects the following major topics are covered: "Microchemistry Arts and Archeology" in "Microchemistry in Life Sciences" "Microchemistry Sciences" in Environmental "Microchemistry in Material Sciences" "Instrumentation, Methods and Automation in Microchemistry". The papers show the present state of microchemistry and the development of this field since the pioneer days of Fritz Pregl and Friedrich Emich. Today microchemistry is a different science as compared to the Pregl and Emich days, for it combines many disciplines like chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics, biology and does not only mean microanalysi- even if it is still predominant and the best tool for elucidation of the microcosmos. Due to this development modern microchemistry plays an important role in science and technology. It had been the intention of the Scientific th Executive Committee to demonstrate this at the 8 International Micro chemical Symposium with the goal to encourage interdisciplinary communication and stimulate discussion.

Book excerpt: Microchemistry is an interdisciplinary area in which relevant results are presented and published in a range of fields including spectroscopy, optics, applied physics, electrochemistry and polymer science. This volume collects for the first time all the latest research and results and classifies them into five parts. Optical micromanipulation and creation, microfabrication and functionalization and dynamic microspectroscopy are novel methodologies for microchemistry where exploratory ideas and future perspectives are included. Microphotochemistry and microelectrochemistry and microphotoconversion are concerned with the relaxation dynamics and chemical reactions in small domains. This comprehensive, up-to-date review of the field will be of great interest to scientists and students working in these areas.

Book excerpt: Forensic science includes all aspects of investigating a crime, including: chemistry, biology and physics, and also incorporates countless other specialties. Today, the service offered under the guise of "forensic science’ includes specialties from virtually all aspects of modern science, medicine, engineering, mathematics and technology. The Encyclopedia of Forensic Sciences, Second Edition, Four Volume Set is a reference source that will inform both the crime scene worker and the laboratory worker of each other’s protocols, procedures and limitations. Written by leading scientists in each area, every article is peer reviewed to establish clarity, accuracy, and comprehensiveness. As reflected in the specialties of its Editorial Board, the contents covers the core theories, methods and techniques employed by forensic scientists – and applications of these that are used in forensic analysis. This 4-volume set represents a 30% growth in articles from the first edition, with a particular increase in coverage of DNA and digital forensics Includes an international collection of contributors The second edition features a new 21-member editorial board, half of which are internationally based Includes over 300 articles, approximately 10pp on average Each article features a) suggested readings which point readers to additional sources for more information, b) a list of related Web sites, c) a 5-10 word glossary and definition paragraph, and d) cross-references to related articles in the encyclopedia Available online via SciVerse ScienceDirect. Please visit www.info.sciencedirect.com for more information This new edition continues the reputation of the first edition, which was awarded an Honorable Mention in the prestigious Dartmouth Medal competition for 2001. This award honors the creation of reference works of outstanding quality and significance, and is sponsored by the RUSA Committee of the American Library Association

Book excerpt: The boundaries of commercially exploited stocks in the Alboran Sea in the western Mediterranean have long been the object of scientific debate, due to gaps in knowledge of the spatial structure and connectivity of fish populations in the area. In an effort to resolve some of these questions, the “Transboundary population structure of sardine, European hake and blackspot seabream in the Alboran Sea and adjacent waters” (Transboran) research project, a collaborative project led jointly by FAO-Copemed II and the GFCM, ran for three years between 2017 and 2021. It aimed to describe the spatial structure of sardine (Sardina pilchardus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) populations in the western Mediterranean to help inform the best possible management advice for these species. Eight research institutions from five partner countries (Algeria, Italy, Morocco, Spain and Tunisia) joined forces on a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach covering different techniques for stock identification and complemented by numerical modelling of hydrodynamic dispersal, spatial information on the fleets targeting the studied species, and field data from an ichthyoplankton survey. All of these disciplines provided information at various contrasting scales to take into account life cycle, demographic and evolutionary processes. This report presents the main findings of the Transboran project, which show differentiation of sardine and European hake stocks between the northern and southern Alboran Sea and reveal a homogenous population structure for blackspot seabream across the study area. The results therefore support maintaining the current configuration of stocks within their respective geographical subareas (GSAs) for assessment and management purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microchemical Analysis of Nervous Tissue focuses on the use of microbiochemical methods in the analysis of nervous tissue, with emphasis on those related to the study of amines, amino acids, phospholipids, and proteins. Special attention is paid to the choice of biological material and the various procedures used for the isolation by dissection of defined components of the nervous system. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of microprocedures used in neurochemistry, followed by a discussion on the importance of choosing the biological material for microanalysis. The isolation of nervous tissue for analysis is then considered, with particular reference to invertebrate neurons; cell components from fresh, "fixed," freeze-dried, and frozen impregnated tissue; and discrete areas of nervous tissue. Subsequent chapters describe some instruments and glassware used in microprocedures, along with the applications of such procedures; general techniques used in microprocedures; microdetermination of phospholipids as well as amines and amino acids as dansyl derivatives; and microelectrophoresis of proteins. This book will be of interest to molecular biologists, microbiologists, physiologists, and neurochemists.
