However, their performance is usually constrained by various factors. Thus, this research is basically aimed at investigating key determinants of performance among micro-enterprise businesses in Dodola town of Oromia region. It examines the extent to which performance of micro-enterprises is associated with characteristics of the owner and business constraints. To this end, primary data were gathered using interview schedule from a sample of 112 micro-enterprises selected using stratified random sampling. Besides, two Focus Group Discussions were held with fourteen randomly selected micro-entrepreneurs. To further triangulate the data Key informant interviews were held with three MSE office heads. Then after primary data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Characteristics of the enterprises and their entrepreneurs were analyzed using percentage, mean, median and standard deviation. On the other hand, Pearson’s chi-square(x2), paired sample t-test and multinomial logistic regression were used to make inferences about the subject under investigation. In this study, performance of micro-enterprises was measured in terms of two main indicators namely profit and employment growth. The results of paired t-test indicated statistically significant mean difference in socio-economic status of entrepreneurs before and after starting micro-enterprise business. However, only education was found as a significant predictor of employment growth. Key Words: Micro-enterprise; Performance; Multinomial Logistic Regression; Performance Determinants.

Micro and small enterprises are long recognized as important vehicles of economic diversification, employment creation, income generation and distribution, and poverty alleviation. As a result, micro and small enterprises occupy a prominent position in the development agenda of Ethiopia. The main objective of this study was to examine factors affecting the development and promotion of micro and small enterprises in Nekemte town. The total population of the study was 504 micro and small enterprises operating in the town. Five sectors (construction, manufacturing, urban agriculture, trade and service) were used as a stratum. Proportional stratified sampling technique was used for the selection of 96 micro and small enterprises from the strata. Following this, the researcher has selected key informants from each selected micro and small enterprises utilizing purposive sampling technique. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed. The researcher has utilized both primary (data collected) and secondary sources of information. The quantitative data was analyzed by using statistical package for social science (SPSS-version 16.0.) The result shows lack of access to credit from formal financial institution, lack of suitability and sufficiency of work premise, lack of technical and managerial capacity to guide operation, low level of educational achievement, lack of effective market linkage, lack of good market for their product, difficulty in forecasting market demand, failure to use business plan to guide operation, and low level of profit re-investment in business expansion were the major problems that hider the promotion and development of micro and small enterprises in the town. Moreover, the result also indicated that micro and small enterprises operators have concentrated in some sectors such as service and trade thereby creating unhealthy competition while agriculture and construction sectors which have potential economic activities seem to be ignored.

Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, International Islamic University Malaysia, course: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) English for International Communication, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) undergraduate students. A set of questionnaires were distributed online and data from a sample of 75 students were collected through Google Forms. Two demographic factors, namely gender and years of learning English, were used as the variables. The finding of the study suggests that the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were not affected by gender but were affected by the duration of learning English. The factors that were contributing to the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were language anxiety, students’ attitude and also peers, parental and teacher influences. Besides, the study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between cultural stereotypes and students’ performance in second language acquisition. The level of English proficiency among Malaysian students are often questioned. Despite learning English for almost 10 years in school, the majority of Malaysian students still encounter difficulties in using the language effectively especially in tertiary education. Many local graduates are still unemployed due to their lack of fluency in English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s when the microfinance revolution began, much has been accomplished, but the field became more refined in the 1990s as a result of shifts in paradigms, strategies, and development practices. This volume addresses the three policy objectives that now occupy those who wish to use credit as a development tool: financial sustainability of microfinance institutions, outreach to the poor, and welfare impact. Inevitable tradeoffs exist among these objectives, and the book advances an analytical framework that assists students of and experts in microfinance to identify the tradeoffs and synergies at the institutional level and in the policy environment. The book features a wealth of empirical data and innovative analytical studies, and critically discusses the role of public support for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in light of the social costs and benefits generated by such financial systems. The book is organized into five parts. The first discusses the demand for and access to financial services by the poor, emphasizing that demand-oriented, pro-poor financial services are crucial in reaching the poor. The second is concerned with two of the criteria used to evaluate MFIs—outreach and financial sustainability. The third features innovative econometric studies seeking to evaluate the impact of MFIs at the household level. The fourth looks at the role of both public- and private-sector institutions in developing sustainable financial systems. And the fifth summarizes implications for policy and research. Given the lack of sound, empirical literature on microfinance, this volume is sure to advance knowledge and research methodology in the field.
