Book excerpt: Major League Baseball's Opening Day, 1951. Nineteen-year-old Mickey Mantle puts on the New York Yankees' famous white pinstriped uniform. His stomach roils. Sweat beads his brow. Today is his first major league game in front of a near-capacity crowd at Yankee Stadium, and there is one man Mickey doesn't want to disappoint above all others: his father. Mickey Mantle: Rookie in Pinstripes is the uplifting true story of how a painfully shy teenager from rural Commerce, Oklahoma, became one of the biggest stars in Major League Baseball. While he looked to Joe DiMaggio for inspiration and dreamed of someday playing with that great New York Yankee, Mickey's true hero was his dad. Raised during the Depression, Mickey learned how to catch, hit, and field the ball from his father, Elvin. In high school, Mickey suffered a football injury that revealed a serious bone disorder. He wondered if he would ever play baseball again. But with the support and love of his father, he overcame his affliction and signed with the New York Yankees in 1949. A moving story of Mickey's early years in baseball, from his difficult rookie season to his triumphant return in 1951, Mickey Mantle portrays the everlasting bond between father and son and the making of one of baseball's greatest legends.

Book Synopsis The Hidden Language of Baseball by : Paul Dickson
Download or read book The Hidden Language of Baseball written by Paul Dickson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball is set apart from other sports by many things, but few are more distinctive than the intricate systems of coded language that govern action on the field and give baseball its unique appeal. During a nine‐inning game, more than one thousand silent instructions are given—from catcher to pitcher, coach to batter, fielder to fielder, umpire to umpire—and without this speechless communication the game would simply not be the same. Baseball historian Paul Dickson examines the rich legacy of baseball’s hidden language, offering fans everywhere a smorgasbord of history and anecdote. Baseball’s tradition of signing grew out of the signal flags used by ships and hand signals used by soldiers during battle and were first used in games during the Civil War. The Hartford Dark Blues appear to be the first team to steal signs, introducing a larcenous obsession that, as Dickson delightfully chronicles, has given the game some of its most historic—and outlandish—moments. In this revised and expanded edition through the 2018 season, Dickson discusses recent developments and incidents, including the illegal use of new technology to swipe signs. A roster of baseball’s greatest names and games, past and present, echoes throughout, making The Hidden Language of Baseball a unique window on the history of our national pastime.

Download or read book Street Games written by Richard M. Abrams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RICHARD M. ABRAMS, a retired U.C. Berkeley professor of modern U.S. history, recreates the many games, some of them now all-but extinct, played in the city streets daily by boys and girls during the turbulent era of the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the increasingly prosperous post-war environment. Abrams was born in Brooklyn in 1932 when cramped urban living quarters were commonplace, and limited income constricted access to organized sports venues and equipment. His was "an outdoor generation" forced to depend on inventive use of scarce resources. From many conversations over the years with his children, colleagues, friends, and students, he came to realize how few people today have any idea of the kinds of recreation that filled daily life for young city people in the years of his own youth. Street Games is a combination of Abrams's reminiscences of the games he played and his placement of those activities in the social history of the period, often highlighting its contrast with the world we know today. The work is compelling, informative, and fast-paced in its description of a mostly lost piece of history. It is also fascinating for its speculations about such things as the hidden meaning of "It" in games of tag, the small regard for safety (helmets? face masks? seat belts?), and the complex character of racism and ethnic tensions in those times. One reader of the manuscript remarked, “I have not read in many years anything that gave me so much pure, sustained pleasure.” RICHARD M. ABRAMS was educated in the public schools of Brooklyn. He earned his BA, MA, and Ph.D. degrees at Columbia University. He began his teaching career at Columbia in 1957. He moved to the University of California in Berkeley in 1961, where he taught until retiring in 2007. He is married to Marcia Ash Abrams, and they have three children and four grandchildren. He has been a visiting professor of history in London, Moscow, Beijing, and Innsbruck, and has lectured widely in Europe and Asia. His other books include: Conservatism in a Progressive Era; The Burdens of Progress; and most recently, America Transformed.
