Indeed, communication technologies, people, and platforms are converging in new ways around the world, not just in China. Book excerpt: Currently, U.S. community colleges serve nearly half of all students of color in higher education who, for a multitude of reasons, do not continue their education by transferring to a university. For those students who do transfer, often the responsibility for the application process, retention, graduation, and overall success is placed on them rather than their respective institutions. This book aims to provide direction toward the development and maintenance of a transfer receptive culture, which is defined as an institutional commitment by a university to support transfer students of color. A transfer receptive culture explicitly acknowledges the roles of race and racism in the vertical transfer process from a community college to a university and unapologetically centers transfer as a form of equity in the higher education pipeline. The framework is guided by critical race theory in education, which acknowledges the role of white supremacy and its contemporary and historical role in shaping institutions of higher learning.

Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, historian Andreana Prichard presents an intimate history of a single mission organization, the Universities’ Mission to Central Africa (UMCA), told through the rich personal stories of a group of female African lay evangelists. Founded by British Anglican missionaries in the 1860s, the UMCA worked among refugees from the Indian Ocean slave trade on Zanzibar and among disparate communities on the adjacent Tanzanian mainland. Prichard illustrates how the mission’s unique theology and the demographics of its adherents produced cohorts of African Christian women who, in the face of linguistic and cultural dissimilarity, used the daily performance of a certain set of “civilized” Christian values and affective relationships to evangelize to new inquirers. The UMCA’s “sisters in spirit” ultimately forged a united spiritual community that spanned discontiguous mission stations across Tanzania and Zanzibar, incorporated diverse ethnolinguistic communities, and transcended generations. Focusing on the emotional and personal dimensions of their lives and on the relationships of affective spirituality that grew up among them, Prichard tells stories that are vital to our understanding of Tanzanian history, the history of religion and Christian missions in Africa, the development of cultural nationalisms, and the intellectual histories of African women.

Book excerpt: The Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, which appointed John Alfred Hannah as board secretary in 1935 and president in 1941, was a very different institution from the Michigan State University from which he retired in 1969, after serving twenty-eight years as president. During Hannah's tenure, overall enrollment increased from 4,401 to 40,820, while graduate student numbers went from below 200 to more than 10,000. The number of departments also grew from 44 in 1935 to 104 in 1969. Hannah's expansion of academic courses went far beyond the original agricultural and applied sciences, as was reflected in the two changes of name for the college: In 1955, the college became Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science, and in 1964 it was renamed Michigan State University. In examining this transformation, Dressel - who spent a very distinguished forty-four year career at Michigan State College/University and is noted for his writings on evaluation in higher education - produced neither a biography of Hannah nor a history of Michigan State during the Hannah years. Instead, his book describes the character of the institution before Hannah's arrival, examines Hannah's vision for the college, and evaluates Hannah's methods for "the transformation of a small land-grant college into a major university under the leadership of a man thoroughly committed to the land-grant mission." Dressel examines how Hannah sought to infuse the university with an expanded concept of public service and extended this concept to an international audience.
