Each year in the history of this society since its organization has brought to us valuable (papers that have secured to us important history relating to this State, which have been secured to posterity through these annual publications. The collections of the past year have been no excep tion and the material of this volume is but an additional proof of the value of this society in procuring and distributing to our public libraries a history of the earlier days of our State that may be made a study for both old and young in all the years to come. Among other interesting matter here offered we desire to call particular attention to the life of Senator Lucius Lyon, found at page 404, and also to letters written bv him, commencing at page 412. These letters contain a history within themselves, that are beyond value to the student of State affairs. The society is under many obligations to Mr. L. G. Stuart, who gave time and expense to secure these letters. The paper found at pages 341 and 840, relating to the bou-ndarv lines of our State, have been carefully prepared from records and maps, and the society is under thany obligations to Miss Anna'h May Soule in giving us the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections, Vol. 12: Collections and Researches Made by the Pioneer and Historical Society of This State of Michigan It is with no less of satisfaction than has accompanied the issue of previous volumes, that the committee of historians of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society view the completion of another volume of their Historical Collections. The twelfth of the series, it is believed to be no whit behind its predecessors in interest, while the purely historical character of its contents in some important respects enhances its value. The first half of the present volume embraces the fourth installment of papers from the Canadian archives at Ottawa, whose value is, by this time, too well recognized to need elaboration. The latter half comprises copies of papers in possession of the old State Historical Society at Detroit, a large number of which were published in Vol. 8, of these Collections. These pertain, for the most part, to the history of Michigan while yet a territory, and throw much light upon the forms of government and political methods of that time, as well as furnishing much curious and interesting information of a miscellaneous nature. It should be noted that in occasional instances where there may seem to be a discrepancy in statement or in name, whenever verification has been impossible, the copy has been in all cases closely followed, and in such instances, too, the correct meaning is usually self evident.
