Download or read book The United States and Canada written by Paul Wonnacott and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1987 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is the largest trading partner of the United States, and the two governments have begun negotiations for a free trade agreement which would tie their relationship even closer. This study analyzes the difficult problems that must be addressed in the negotiations - including quite different perceptions in the two countries of what constitutes fair trade. It suggests several possible ways of reducing differences over subsidies and countervailing duties. It also addresses the exchange rate relationship between the two dollars, and how this affects the trade outlook. An appendix by John Williamson calculated a fundamental equilibrium exhange rate for the Canadian dollar.
Download or read book The Talent Edge written by David S. Cohen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical step-by-step approach to hiring the right person. Every hiring manager knows that the traditional hiring and interviewing process is a poor tool for predicting organizational fit and future on-the-job success. Behavioral interviewing can improve your chances of picking the right candidate two to five times over traditional processes. It focuses on how the candidate works rather than on skills, qualifications, and impressions. The Talent Edge shows how you can develop a concrete understanding of what your own top performers do differently than the majority of their peers, and how to translate that knowledge into a better hiring system. While using case studies from organizations that have successfully transformed their hiring practices, the book articulates the business case for a Behavioral Interviewing system, and provides a roadmap for implementing it. Comprehensive coverage includes: how to write job profiles and translate them into questions and answers that can be used in the interview; how to prepare for the interview, ask questions, and probe for the right information. The book also offers advice on how behaviors that are defined and proven to be useful in the hiring process can be incorporated into performance management, career development, and succession planning.

Book Synopsis Resisting Protectionism by : Helen V. Milner
Download or read book Resisting Protectionism written by Helen V. Milner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why didn't the protectionist spiral of the 1920s reappear in the 1970s in light of similar economic and political realities? In Resisting Protectionism, Helen Milner analyzes the growth of international economic interdependence and its effects on trade policy in the United States and France. She argues that the limited protectionist response of the 1970s stems from the growth of firms' international economic ties, which reduces their interest in protection by increasing its cost. Thus firms with greater international connections will be less protectionist than more domestically oriented firms. The book develops this thesis by examining the international ties of export dependence, multinationality, and global intra-firm trade. After studying selected U.S. industries, Milner also examines French firms to see if they respond to increased interdependence in the same way as American firms, despite their different historical, ideological, and political contexts.

Book Synopsis Copyright, Communication and Culture by : Carys J. Craig
Download or read book Copyright, Communication and Culture written by Carys J. Craig and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, Carys Craig challenges the assumptions of possessive individualism embedded in modern day copyright law, arguing that the dominant conception of copyright as private property fails to adequately reflect the realities of cultural creativity. Employing both theoretical argument and doctrinal analysis, including the novel use of feminist theory, the author explores how the assumptions of modern copyright result in law that frequently restricts the kinds of expressive activities it ought to encourage. In contrast, Carys Craig proposes a relational theory of copyright based on a dialogic account of authorship, and guided by the public interest in a vibrant, participatory culture. Through a critical examination of the doctrines of originality and fair dealing, as well as the relationship between copyright and freedom of expression, she explores how this relational theory of copyright law could further the public purposes of the copyright system and the social values it embodies. This unique and insightful study will be of great interest to students and scholars of intellectual property, communications, cultural studies, feminist theory and the arts and humanities.

Book Synopsis Risking Free Trade by : Michael Lusztig
Download or read book Risking Free Trade written by Michael Lusztig and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few issues as politically explosive as the liberalization of trade, as recent controversies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico have shown. While loosening trade restrictions may make sense for a nation's economy as a whole, it typically alienates powerful vested interests. Those interests can exact severe political costs for the government that enacts change. So why accept the risk?Michael Lusztig contructs a model to determine why and under what conditions governments will take the free trade gamble. Lusztig uses his model to explain shifts to free trade in four cases: Britain's repeal of the Corn Laws; the United States' enactment of the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act (1934); Canada's decision to initiate continental free trade with the United States in 1985; and Mexico's decision to pursue the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1990.
