Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meat-eating dinosaurs, or Theropoda, include some of the fiercest predators that ever lived. Some of the group's members survive to this day—as birds. The theropod/bird connection has been explored in several recent works, but this book presents 17 papers on a variety of other topics. It is organized into three parts. Part I explores morphological details that are important for understanding theropod systematics. Part II focuses on specific regions of theropod anatomy and biomechanics. Part III examines various lines of evidence that reveal something about theropods as living creatures. The contributors are Ronan Allain, Rinchen Barsbold, Kenneth Carpenter, Karen Cloward, Rodolfo A. Coria, Philip J. Currie, Peter M. Galton, Robert Gay, Donald M. Henderson, Dong Huang, James I. Book excerpt: Psychic Unrest is full of the sea and rain, blues and golds, rhythm and revolution. This is Lillian Allen's long-anticipated book of poems OCo her first book since 1993. Collected here is a mix of poems, songs and poetic essays. Allen creates and examines a new poetic style, blending traditional poetry with her inimitable lyrical style, resulting in abstract poems with rhythmic movement that shout out to be read aloud."

Book excerpt: The Malagasy revival movement, which started in 1894 and operates within the structure of the historical churches, continues to have a profound impact on Protestant church life. This book focuses on exorcism as practised and understood by the so-called shepherds (lay, unsalaried, consecrated church workers) and defines «exorcism» as the expulsion of demons and prayer with the laying on of hands. This study, with Malagasy actors at its centre, argues that exorcism constitutes a synthesis between the biblical message and the traditional Malagasy culture. The shepherds, who vehemently oppose traditional religion, understand exorcism as a practice appropriate for people with a wide variety of problems, and they assert that the purpose of exorcism is to create a living faith in Jesus. The shepherds consider the battle with demons absolutely decisive because it concerns nothing less than salvation or condemnation.

Book excerpt: This is the first exhibition by AA Bronson, as a solo artist, in the UK. Together with Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, as part of the acclaimed artists' group General Idea, he has exhibited throughout the world for over thirty years. Felix and Jorge both died of AIDS related illnesses in 1994, and since then Bronson explains '...I have been struggling to find the limits of my own body as an independent organism, as a being outside of General Idea. Over the past five years I have found myself, much like a stroke victim, learning again the limits of my nervous system, how to function without my extended body (no longer three heads, twelve limbs), how to create possibilities from my reduced physicality...' Bronson's exhibition consists of only one work, his portrait Felix, June 5th, 1994 - a vast photograph, taken of Felix a few hours after he died, and one of the most powerful images to have been produced by an artist in recent years.

Book excerpt: The first book to look extensively at conceptualism in Canada, published to accompany a touring exhibition. The most transformative art movement of the late 20th century, conceptual art became a global phenomenon long before it was popularized by a new generation of artists and institutions in the early 21st century. Its various manifestations in Canada, however, have remained a limited concern -- a whispered art history circulated among artists and writers primarily in alternative publications and artist-run centres. Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada 1965-1980 is the first publication and exhibition to track the complex, rigorous and diverse manifestations of conceptual art in the country. Presenting work by more than 90 artists in a beautifully produced package, Traffic examines the particular local and geographic needs and interests enacted by individual artists, collectives and art communities from across the country.

This ....[was] conceived and developed by Vincent Bonin ... The publication Documentary protocols (1967-1975) ... constitutes an exercise in the critical examination of the nature of curatorial work and research at the Gallery ... It is an attempt to grasp and describe ... the paradigm of self-determination in Canadian art that emerged in the mid-1960s ... and the rupture that occurred in the mid-1970s between certain aesthetic positions and political objectives."--"Exhibiting research".

Book excerpt: Pop Art embodied the spirit of the 1960s. Despite its carnival aspects, its orgiastic colour and giant scale, it was based on a tough, no-nonsense, no-refinement standard appropriate to its time. Here several critics, each involved in Pop Art, but with different backgrounds, vividly bring the movement to life. Lucy Lippard examines Pop's precursors ranging from folk art, Surrealism and Dada, Stuart Davis and Léger, to the Reuben group, Assemblage, Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, and discusses Pop Art in New York best known for Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist and Claes Oldenburg.
