Book excerpt: Island in the Light / Isla en la luz is a fascinating and insightful compilation that pairs contemporary Cuban visual art and literature by having 30 prominent writers respond to the works of 35 renowned artists. Contemporary Cuban art, literature, and music come together in Island in the Light / Isla en la luz. This bilingual compilation of the work of 35 artists and 30 writers began by selecting artwork by renowned artists and asking prominent writers to create original stories, poems, or essays in response. The result is a thoroughly original and captivating selection of visual arts and literature in dialogue that conveys a sense of the essence and energy of Cuban arts today. Artists represented include Tania Bruguera, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Yoan Capote, Teresita Fernández, Roberto Fabelo, Carlos Garaicoa, and Enrique Martinez Celaya. Among the writers are Wendy Guerra, José Kozer, Jorge Enrique Lage, Legna Rodríguez Iglesias, Achy Obejas, Leonardo Padura, and Reina María Rodríguez. The works are drawn from the Jorge M. Pérez Art Collection; the majority have been gifted to the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), while the others are promised gifts to PAMM. The volume also includes music: Pavel Urkiza composed original scores inspired by several of the selections that readers link to through QR codes. In addition to the short stories, poems, and essays inspired by the artwork, the volume includes commentary and critical essays by Jorge M. Pérez, Carlos Garaicoa, and Wendy Guerra and Leonardo Padura. Proceeds benefit The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, which will redirect the funds to arts organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises performative works and actions carried out in the streets (Artistic-Social Events) by Clemente Padín (Uruguay 1939) from 1970 to 2010. It has an extensive prologue by the German theorist and performer Boris Nieslony, promoter of the Black Market, one of the most prestigious and well-known institutions in the world of action art. It has a direct translation from German by Mario Daniel Cohn, professor at the Goethe Institute in Montevideo, Uruguay In addition to the documentary records of each selected action, the book includes three essays by Padín. Every Sunday, in the heart of Montevideo, a fair-whose axis is Tristán Narvaja Street-is filled with people, books and antiques. In this busy meeting point, the multidisciplinary artist Clemente Padín, precursor of mail art, poet (developer of "visual poetry" and "experimental poetry"), performer, plastic and video artist, he stood on August 17, 1987 in the middle of the street and began to compulsively beat a dry mannequin with a police baton. He counted each stroke aloud while another person wrote down the numbers on a white cardboard. At the end, he clarified that this number corresponded to those disappeared for political reasons during the dictatorship in Uruguay. Then he placed his back in front of the cardboard for someone to draw his outline. He cut out the silhouette and distributed the pieces of paper among the participants, loudly demanding the appearance alive of the people represented in those numbers. This is one of the many performance interventions he has made between 1970 and 2009, all documented in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following the Mexican Revolution, a nationalist and masculinist image of Mexico emerged through the novels of the Revolution, the murals of Diego Rivera, and the movies of Golden Age cinema. Challenging this image were the Contemporneos, a group of writers whose status as outsiders (sophisticated urbanites, gay men, women) gave them not just a different perspective, but a different gaze, a new way of viewing the diverse Mexicos that exist within Mexican society. In this book, Salvador Oropesa offers original readings of the works of five Contemporneos—Salvador Novo, Xavier Villaurrutia, Agustn Lazo, Guadalupe Marn, and Jorge Cuesta—and their efforts to create a Mexican literature that was international, attuned to the realities of modern Mexico, and flexible enough to speak to the masses as well as the elites. Oropesa discusses Novo and Villaurrutia in relation to neo-baroque literature and satiric poetry, showing how these inherently subversive genres provided the means of expressing difference and otherness that they needed as gay men. He explores the theatrical works of Lazo, Villaurrutia's partner, who offered new representations of the closet and of Mexican history from an emerging middle-class viewpoint. Oropesa also looks at women's participation in the Contemporneos through Guadalupe Marn, the sometime wife of Diego Rivera and Jorge Cuesta, whose novels present women's struggles to have a view and a voice of their own. He concludes the book with Novo's self-transformation from intellectual into celebrity, which fulfilled the Contemporneos' desire to merge high and popular culture and create a space where those on the margins could move to the center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "ULYSSES (Modern Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It is considered to be one of the most important works of modernist literature, and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement". Ulysses chronicles the peripatetic appointments and encounters of Leopold Bloom in Dublin in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Ulysses is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels between its characters and events and those of the poem (the correspondence of Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, Molly Bloom to Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus). Joyce divided Ulysses into 18 chapters or "episodes". At first glance much of the book may appear unstructured and chaotic; Joyce once said that he had "put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant", which would earn the novel "immortality". James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses, the short-story collection Dubliners, and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake.
