Book Synopsis Ground in Stone by : Elizabeth Lynch
Download or read book Ground in Stone written by Elizabeth Lynch and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ground in Stone: Landscape, Social Identity, and Ritual Space on the High Plains, Elizabeth Lynch examines the insights and challenges of bedrock ground stone research in archaeological inquiry. Ground in Stone includes analyses of case studies to illustrate field data collection techniques as well as the rich social lives of ground in stone on the Chaquaqua Plateau. Lynch argues that the bedrock features in southeastern Colorado offer valuable insight into the archaeology of the High Plains because they are spaces where people gathered to craft important products—food, tools, and art. In doing so, these places anchored human movement to the landscape and became integral to story-telling and cultural lifeways.

This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the outcome of collaborative European research among archaeologists, archaeobotanists, ethnographers, historians and agronomists, and frequently uses experiments in archaeology. It aims to establish new common ground for integrating different approaches and for viewing agriculture from the standpoint of the human actors involved. Each chapter provides an interdisciplinary overview of the skills used and the social context of the pursuit of agriculture, highlighting examples of tools, technologies and processes from land clearance to cereal processing and food preparation. This is the second of three volumes in the EARTH monograph series, The dynamics of non-industrial agriculture: 8,000 years of resilience and innovation , which shows the great variety of agricultural practices in human terms, in their social, political, cultural and legal contexts.
Download or read book Flexible Stones written by Anna Stroulia and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their ubiquitous presence among prehistoric remains in Greece, ground stone tools have yet to attract the same kind of attention as have other categories of archaeological material, such as pottery or lithics. Flexible Stones provides a detailed analysis of the material discovered during the excavations at Franchthi Cave, Peloponnese, Greece. Approximately 500 tools, the raw material used for their manufacture, as well as the byproducts of such manufacture were found. Most of this collection comes from the Neolithic component of the site—including a small number of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic cases—with a large number of the studied tools indicating multiple uses. Anna Stroulia sees the multifunctional character of these tools as a conscious choice that reflects a flexible attitude of tool makers and users toward tools and raw materials.

Book Synopsis The Impressionists Handbook by : Robert Katz
Download or read book The Impressionists Handbook written by Robert Katz and published by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two authors, who are both knowledgable writers with extensive background in the study of art and art history, write engagingly about the history of impressionism and the life and works of Pissarro, Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, and Sisley. At 7x8.5", the book is compact, but the format is large enough to accommodate decent reproductions of many of the paintings under consideration. This is a thoughtfully prepared, well written treatment of the subject, with none of the ponderousness that "handbook" might imply. It was originally published in 1991 by Bookmart Ltd., UK. Download or read book Mad Enchantment written by Ross King and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From bestselling author Ross King, a brilliant portrait of the legendary artist and the story of his most memorable achievement. Claude Monet is perhaps the world's most beloved artist, and among all his creations, the paintings of the water lilies in his garden at Giverny are most famous. Monet intended the water lilies to provide "an asylum of peaceful meditation." Yet, as Ross King reveals in his magisterial chronicle of both artist and masterpiece, these beautiful canvases (featured in black and white images throughout, as well as a 16-pg color insert) belie the intense frustration Monet experienced in trying to capture the fugitive effects of light, water, and color. They also reflect the terrible personal torments Monet suffered in the last dozen years of his life. Mad Enchantment tells the full story behind the creation of the Water Lilies, as the horrors of World War I came ever closer to Paris and Giverny and a new generation of younger artists, led by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, were challenging the achievements of Impressionism. By early 1914, French newspapers were reporting that Monet, by then seventy-three, had retired his brushes. He had lost his beloved wife, Alice, and his eldest son, Jean. His famously acute vision--what Paul Cezanne called “the most prodigious eye in the history of painting”--was threatened by cataracts. And yet, despite ill health, self-doubt, and advancing age, Monet began painting again on a more ambitious scale than ever before. Linking great artistic achievement to the personal and historical dramas unfolding around it, Ross King presents the most intimate and revealing portrait of an iconic figure in world culture.
