Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

But Scrum’s simplicity itself—its lack of prescription—can be disarming, and new practitioners often find themselves reverting to old project management habits and tools and yielding lesser results. In this illuminating series of case studies, Scrum co-creator and evangelist Ken Schwaber identifies the real-world lessons—the successes and failures—culled from his years of experience coaching companies in agile project management. Through them, you’ll understand how to use Scrum to solve complex problems and drive better results—delivering more valuable software faster. Gain the foundation in Scrum theory—and practice—you need to: Rein in even the most complex, unwieldy projects Effectively manage unknown or changing product requirements Simplify the chain of command with self-managing development teams Receive clearer specifications—and feedback—from customers Greatly reduce project planning time and required tools Build—and release—products in 30-day cycles so clients get deliverables earlier Avoid missteps by regularly inspecting, reporting on, and fine-tuning projects Support multiple teams working on a large-scale project from many geographic locations Maximize return on investment!

Book excerpt: This is a simple, easy-to-understand guide for anyone who wants to learn the Agility concept and the Scrum framework. It covers the underlying concepts and principles, along with Scrum roles and responsibilities, events, artifacts, and scaling approaches, as well as common practices and techniques. ❶ Instead of praising Agility, the book focuses on understanding the real meaning of it in a straightforward and consistent way and reviews the types of projects where it may work and where it may not. This foundation will help you find your way in real world daily problems. ❷ The book is a complete guide to the core Scrum framework, based on the Scrum Guide (Nov 2017 edition). It covers all roles and responsibilities, events, and artifacts, with a short section about scaling Scrum. ❸ There’s a chapter on eXtreme Programming, which has been used as an excuse to explore some of the most important Agile practices and techniques, such as Test-Driven Development and Pair-Programming, in an integrated way. ❹ The fourth chapter is an overview of the DSDM® methodology, which is mainly focused on its approach to managing scope and fixed-price contracts in a structured way. ❺ There’s an overview of Kanban and ScrumBan in the last chapter. This book is aligned with the EXIN Agile Scrum Foundation certification program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agile development methods began to emerge around 20 years ago. However, it was not until the early 2000s that they began to be widely used in industry. This growth was often due to the advent of Internet services requiring faster cycles of development in order to heighten the rate at which an ever-greater number of functionalities were made available. In parallel, user-centered design (UCD) methods were also becoming more and more widely used: hence, user-centered design and agile methods were bound to cross paths, at least in the telecoms industry! During this period, in the field of telecommunications, the explosion in the number of connected terminals, Web applications, new use environments (particularly in a domestic setting), etc., meant it was crucial to gain a fuller understanding of users’ requirements and better evaluate the relevance and acceptance of services’ attempts to cater for these requirements. Thus the user-centered agile method, as proposed in this book, aims to mutually integrate two existing methods: user-centered design – as used by ergonomists – and the agile Scrum method – as used by developers. The user testing method is also covered. Analyzing work on this subject spanning the past 10 years, the authors also provide an assessment of the feedback on the user-centered agile method. The method described in this book has been based on all these sources. It is a framework relying on the logic introduced by Scrum, i.e. a framework based on project management. The method proposed is seen as an extension of Scrum which is “centered on humans” because of the integration of user-centered design and user-testing. Therefore the description of the user-centered agile method is based on the basics of the agile Scrum method and uses its terminology and elements. As well as descriptive elements of the user-centered agile method, practical examples of how to implement it are also provided. Contents 1. Introduction. 2. Intrioduction to the Methods Employed. 3. Sources for this Work. 4. Description of The User-Centered Agile Method. 5. Case Studies. About the Authors Dominique Deuff worked at the National Institute of Informatics in Japan for 21⁄2 years before coming back to France in June 2006 and joining Orange Labs France Telecom as a developer in a Scrum team. In 2008, she graduated with a Master’s degree in ergonomics and has since then been applying her new skills to various projects at Orange Labs Lannion. Mathilde Cosquer joined Orange Labs as an ergonomist after completing her PhD on the question of transparency of technical devices from the user’s point of view. She has taken part in the design and evaluation of numerous innovating services, but over the past four years, she has been more particularly involved in projects of interpersonal communication services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever tried your hand at software development only to find out that it’s much harder than you prepared for? Not only do you have to make sure that your skills are up to par with everybody else but there is also the matter of coordinating with everyone involved in that project. And with Collaboration comes the potential for complexity. Soon enough, you’ll be juggling different deadlines and correspondences, deal with differences in design approaches, and wade through deep technical problems. Aside from that, you’d have to deal with pressure from investors and stakeholders whose visions your team is trying to translate into something tangible but often get blindsided by last-minute committee decisions. Now, what if you are open to a more agile method of managing projects but find changes in your results to be insignificant? For instance, you might have adopted methodologies like Scrum and XP but find your team of going through the motions of the change instead of fully embracing such. Managing a project that requires collaborative effort is complicated and often challenging, there is no doubt to that. But what if someone were to tell you that you can help your team achieve its goals at a faster and far more effective pace? This is where this book comes into play. In this book, you will learn the different Agile Methodologies, the rationale behind their structures, and the values, principles, and concepts that you could use in employing them. If that is not enough for you, here are a few more things that the book will focus on: What motivates teams and what ideas and principles do they identify with the most? The basics of the four major Agile methodologies: Scrum, XP, Kanban, and Lean. What makes them different from one another? Restructuring your team’s framework to be more compatible with agile methodologies. Picking the right methodology for your team or for a certain project. Preparing, dealing with, and mitigating potential problems that might arise from the application of methodologies. Ensuring sustainability in the application of agile methodologies. In essence, by learning of the Why behind Agile Project Management methods, you can find the How in implementing them for your own team. And eventually, you should be able to achieve the results you have set for the team or, better yet, go beyond those. The information provided in this book has been organized in such a way that it is easy to understand and master, even for those who are relatively new to the concepts of software development and project management. If the prospect of learning how to finish projects faster and more effectively intrigues you, then it is now time to dive deep into the world of Agile Project Management!
