Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held under the auspices of the Division of Polymer Mater ials:Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. There is a myriad of applications (ranging from aerospace to surgery) where adhesives are used to join different materials, and concomitantly the understanding of the behavior of adhesive joints becomes very important. There are many factors which can influence the behavior of adhesive joints, e.g., substrate preparation, in terfacial aspects, joint design, mode of stress, external environ ment, etc., and in order to understand the joint behavior in a holistic manner, one must take due cognizance of all these germane factors. So this symposium was planned to address not only how to make acceptable bonds but their characterization, durability and testing were also accorded due consideration.

Download or read book Testing Adhesive Joints written by Lucas F.M. da Silva and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joining techniques such as welding, brazing, riveting and screwing are used by industry all over the world on a daily basis. A further method of joining has also proven to be highly successful: adhesive bonding. Adhesive bonding technology has an extremely broad range of applications. And it is difficult to imagine a product - in the home, in industry, in transportation, or anywhere else for that matter - that does not use adhesives or sealants in some manner. The book focuses on the methodology used for fabricating and testing adhesive and bonded joint specimens. The text covers a wide range of test methods that are used in the field of adhesives, providing vital information for dealing with the range of adhesive properties that are of interest to the adhesive community. With contributions from many experts in the field, the entire breadth of industrial laboratory examples, utilizing different best practice techniques are discussed. The core concept of the book is to provide essential information vital for producing and characterizing adhesives and adhesively bonded joints.

Yang and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesive-bonded joints have been used widely for composite materials as a necessary alternative to conventional mechanical joint designs. In a bonded joint, the load is transferred from one substrate to the other mainly through adhesive shear stress. One of the greatest drawbacks to predicting the mechanical behavior of bonded joints has been the lack of reliable data on the mechanical properties of adhesives. Among many test methods that have been developed to test structural adhesives in thin film geometries, the ASTM D 5656 "thick-adherend lap shear test" is used frequently to determine the shear properties of adhesives while the samples are loaded in tension. Due to the nonuniformity of adhesive shear stress distribution within the joint, through both the bondedline thickness and overlap length, and the measurement method described in the test method, some errors will be introduced if corrections are not made. A finite element analysis was conducted in order to provide a clear picture of the mechanical behavior of the ASTM D 5656 specimen under loading. Based on the results from finite element analysis, the sources of error were analyzed and three correction factors were introduced to recover the adhesive shear modulus of the specimen. Suggestions of mounting the KGR-1 measurement device are also given in order to avoid some of the errors. Because results from linear finite element analysis were used, only adhesive shear modulus within the linear range is discussed in this article.
