This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank knowledge product, “Food systems for an urbanizing world” (“Food Systems”), argues that future food systems will need to be increasingly focused on achieving four interlinked outcomes: generating remunerative agriculture, food processing and food service jobs; improving food security through improved access to affordable, quality food; producing and distributing nutritious and safe food; and becoming more sustainable and resilient. In response to these challenges, a diverse range of food system issues are being addressed by a growing number of municipal governments and local stakeholders in cities throughout the world. This report is a companion to the original report on Food Systems and as such represents the first step in discussing an urban food diagnostic and metrics framework and identifying data needs and innovative ways to collect information for this nascent urban food agenda. This introductory piece of work aims to propose a preliminary set of diagnostic questions and metrics for the outcomes and interventions as set forth in the report, Food Systems for an Urbanizing World.

Book Synopsis Steering Sustainability in an Urbanising World by : Dr Anitra Nelson
Download or read book Steering Sustainability in an Urbanising World written by Dr Anitra Nelson and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability has become the key challenge for urban planners, housing and infrastructure policy makers. Citizens are increasingly encouraged to live more compactly; in denser urban developments, to use less water and other natural resources and to choose public transport. While councils, government agencies and private business invest in a broad range of promotions offering discounts on sustainable products and services, uptake has been slow and the impacts marginal at a time when environmental stresses suggest that we must act fast. This book examines this pressing problem in a holistic way, discussing broad-scale sustainability policies and programmes for achieving sustainable urban futures. It brings together academics and practitioners to analyze the complexity and interdependence of principles, models, processes and practices of sustainability in a range of integrated sectors as well as the establishment and maintenance of sustainable physical infrastructure in cities.

Book Synopsis Leveraging Urbanization to Promote a New Growth Model While Reducing Territorial Disparities in Morocco by : Somik Lall
Download or read book Leveraging Urbanization to Promote a New Growth Model While Reducing Territorial Disparities in Morocco written by Somik Lall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today 60 percent of Moroccans reside in urban areas, as opposed to 35 percent in 1970. By 2050, nearly three-quarters of the country’s population will be living in cities. Along with the concentration of people, urbanization will lead to the increasing concentration of economic activities in cities, which today are estimated to account for about 75 percent of the country’s GDP and 70 percent of investments at the national level. To accompany these transformations, the Moroccan government has adopted, in recent years, ambitious programs to improve living standards in urban and rural areas. Significant improvements in living standards have been achieved through national master plans. Cities are the engines of today’s demographic and economic growth in Morocco, but they also face persistent challenges. Despite substantial public investments and strong potential for cities to absorb rural poverty, important pockets of urban poverty remain. Spatial disparities are a major cause for concern both for citizens as well as for national and local governments. In addition, Moroccan cities are not delivering on their full potential. Urbanization has not generated the same growth benefits in Morocco as it has in many other countries with similar contexts. These patterns suggest that Morocco needs specific policies to improve returns from its urbanization process. The main message of this note is that urbanization and spatial equity are not competing objectives when urbanization is supported and managed well. Well-managed urbanization allows for economies of scale in the provision of services and the development of more efficient labor. This note identifies priority actions to be taken at national, regional, and local levels to allow public authorities to act within a coherent framework and to help urban development to boost economic growth and promote shared prosperity for all.
