Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method and Methods in the Teaching of English To affect the various motives that may prompt an author to add one more to the many books on methods of teaching that are now available, there seem to be two very good reasons why a new text on the teaching of English may be deemed unnecessary. In the first place, there are a number of excellent discussions of the general phases of the subject and of special branches, which are sound in principle and scholarly in analysis of the material. Secondly, in these days when so much is said in favor of allowing the initiative of the teacher to find full expression, any book which prescribes definite methods of teaching may be said to set itself against the trend of modern theory. Despite these considerations, however, I have long felt that there is a definite need for the kind of treatment of the subjects connected with the teaching of English in the elementary schools that I have given in this book. There is a real need of specific suggestions as to a rational mode of approaching and developing the work in English. Teachers are everywhere asking for directions which will give them not so much a model for direct imitation as a basis for intelligent self-criticism. This book aims to present a consistent method of work in all the branches of elementary English. While drawing freely from the various accepted texts, and adopting without hesitation many valuable suggestions from teachers and writers in all grades of the work, it claims consideration for this original feature: It aims to separate the teaching of technique from the teaching for appreciation and self-expression, and it seeks to found its methods upon a definite psychology of the learning process. No attempt has been made to exhaust every part of the subject or to be so definite as to make original thought on the part of the teacher unnecessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods in Teaching It was suggested that educators of well known ability in the teaching of particular subjects be asked to contribute, in order that the book might set forth the most approved modern methods of teaching, as developed by large experience. This suggestion was adopted unanimously, and the undersigned was requested to make all necessary arrangements and to act as editor. After much thought and consultation with those interested in the subject, the gentlemen whose names are given in the list of contributors, were requested to write on the several subjects allotted to them; and the editor desires to thank the contributors for the readiness with which they responded to his request, and to acknowledge their claim to the greater share of whatever credit may be awarded to this publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method in History: For Teachers and Students To state the matter negatively, the aim has not been to discuss devices and external manipulations in teaching history; the term method is not even intended to suggest diagrams, chronological charts, or expedients of like nature. But something far more fundamental has been the aim: the determining factors in method and not the determined - the principal 'and not the accidental - ones have -been sought for and put to work at the problem. Whether diagrams, outlines, maps, and so on are to be, used in teaching history cannot be decided by the whim of the teacher or by some current fashion in teach ing the subject, but is to be decided, like other questions about devices and expedients, by an appeal to principles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Teaching History This book was intended to be the first of a series entitled a Pedagogical Library, devoted to methods of teaching, one volume of which was to be occupied with each of the more important branches of instruction in grammar and high schools. The design and plan of the work was not to produce systematic treatises, and still less to develop anything ultimate or absolute in method; but to gather together, in the form most likely to be of direct practical utility to teachers, and especially students and readers of history, generally, the opinions and modes of instruction, actual or ideal, of eminent and representative specialists in each department. The present volume has been an unremunerated work of love on the part of each writer, and the appearance of subsequent volumes in the series is not yet assured. It should be added that the articles arc printed in the order in which they were received by the editor. Teachers in whom a methodic interest has been awakened will find many useful hints in the following books, pamphlets, and articles: - Georg Goufried Gervinus. Gruudzuge der Historik. Leipzic, 1837. pp. 95. F. Jacobi. Grundzuge einer neuen Methode fur den vaterlandischen Geschichtsunterricht in deutschen Schulen. Nurnberg, 1839. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Project Method of Teaching This book is devoted mainly to a critical discussion of the project method of teaching. The term project has only recently made its appearance in educational terminology, but the idea back of the project is not new. It is quite probable that skillful teachers have always used the essential features of the project method. A survey of modern teaching methods in engineering, law, medicine, agriculture, as well as in the prescribed subjects of the school curriculum, shows that much effort is being expended to bridge the chasm between school tasks and activities outside the school. In other words, the project idea, as defined by the author, is attempted to some extent in all these fields. But the measure of value is in the body of the'text, not in the preface. The gateway is not a true criterion of the fruits in the field. The books on school methods can be easily classified. Some rest upon the abstract theories of psychology, exalting rigid formality; some present mere outlines in logical forms, leaving the student to find and adapt the subject-matter; others elabo rate particular methods suited to the respective subjects of instruction. All these are good, but still the young student wavers beneath the uncertainty of knowing exactly what to do. Hence, this book is prepared to satisfy the actual needs of teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Education Method and Other Papers on Education The publication, in a collected form, of the papers included in this volume may not be without value at the present critical juncture of educational affairs when so many serious attempts are being made to bring our school system into harmony with the times and'to improve the methods of teaching. The earlier articles are didactic: in these I have sought to give reasons for the introduction of scientific method into all schools. The later articles are con structive: they contain the suggestions which, from time to time, I have ventured to make for the improve ment of the methods of teaching elementary physical science. Whilst the former may be of interest to the general reader, the latter will appeal more to the specialist.
